On tap at Central Coast Brewing in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Pours a super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy latticework of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, rye, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a roasty aftertaste. There is a medium herbal hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable and pretty tasty.

Central Coast Catch 23
On tap from the brewery

Appearance: dark brown, very good lacing, and medium head.

Smell: rich hops, grain, and rye.

Taste: rich malty hops, slight chocolate, and a light rye finish.

Mouthfeel: medium.

This is a nice brew. The hops are very pleasant and prevalent. The rye isn't very strong, but you can taste it in the background. 4.5

Purchased this bomber at Cork 'N Bottle in San Luis Obispo. "First Edition" bottling. While I'm not sure of the bottling date, I would assume this beer is under four months old. It's been refrigerated for that entire time.

Poured into a New Belgium globe.

Appearance: Looked gorgeous off the pour, and it maintains its beauty throughout the session. A dense, creamy, tan head sits atop a pitch black body. Thin slivers of brown peak through the body's edges when the beer is directly back-lit; otherwise, this looks completely opaque. Catch 23 exhibits fantastic head retention and slops thick, goopy lacing all over the walls of the glass. Excellent.

Smell: After letting it decant in the NB globe for about 15 minutes, I decided it was time to dive in. Pine sap, caramel, dark roast coffee, earth, and lemon zest all jump out immediately. Deeper whiffs uncover breakfast pastries (esp. coffee cake) and chocolate. Complex and enjoyable, although there's also something off in this aroma - I can't put my finger on it.

Taste: Loads of moist pine from beginning to end. Dark chocolate, caramel, cream, orange and lemon add to the mix. Great complexity and balance, but what I really like about this beer is that the roasted malts don't contribute an insane amount of bitterness on an already hop-forward finish.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and extra creamy thanks to a solid malt bill and fine, velvety carbonation. This is probably the easiest drinking black IPA I've ever had. Medium-bodied with excellent hop-malt balance. Finishes lightly sweet and exhibits great mouth-coating.

Overall: I used to think all of Central Coast's beers were shit. Then I tried this one a few months back, and it totally changed my perception. Unlike most American black ales, or whatever you choose to call them, Catch 23 doesn't exude a heavy-handed bitterness. Far from intense, this one's impeccably smooth and beautifully balanced. If you're lucky enough to spot this on-tap or in the bottle, give it a try!

Kudos to Drew. You're a magician!

22 oz. bomber,

A: Pours brown with a medium off-white head, solid retention.

S: Heavy pine smell, sap, Christmas tree, great nose.

T: Milk chocolate and carob, lots of sweet malt flavours. Great balance with the grapefruit and almost tropical hop notes.

M: Medium-bodied, smooth, pretty easy drinking.

D: Not a huge CDA fan but this is well done. The malt flavours are interesting, the hop flavours are exciting, a very good first impression out of SLO.
