I have the English label that says Unknown Shore rather than Nežinomas Krantas, though I'm sure the Lithuanian is more poetic. The flavor, however, is not. My first thought is sweet Vermouth that has sat opened and evaporated the alcohol. It's pervasively woody, not exactly oxidized. A very odd winey smell, old nameless fruit, prunes.

The color is an attractive coppery brown with plenty of foam, though it evaporates as you sip dubiously. I can't imagine trying to drink the whole 750 ml bottle. Best by date is 12. 03. 16. Purchased somewhere in Washington.

11.2oz bottle purchased at Total Wine in Spokane Valley, Washington, for $2.99. Label is in English, unlike one pictured on BA. According to a sticker on the back, it is "Best before 05MF." That's informative...

Holy disappearing head, Batman! Dark brown that becomes a very dark burnt orange when held up to bright light. Head is so transitory as to nearly not be eligible to have existed at all. In moments, there was nothing but a thin ring of khaki bubbles.

I smell cloves and something not unlike a cherry flavored cough syrup.

Clovey like a hefe but without the earthiness of the wheat. Instead, there's the fruity cough syrup noted above-thankfully it's not too strong- and a vague, raisiny dried fruit flavor. Finishes sweet.

Fairly light bodied, with a watery mouthfeel.

Not awful, but not very good. Don't think the oak aging did shit for this. Avoid unless desperate or no genuine Belgian dubbels are on hand and only a dubbel will do.

First tasted it at the local bar and the bought it bottled. A stylish 0.33 bottle pours dark pretty chestnut color, virtually no foam. Beautiful aroma of old wooden barrels, oaken bar tables, rye bread, and hops. Taste is smooth and pleasant with strong hints of licorice and rye, yet not very complex. Medium carbonation. Overall is very good, but lacks some punch and zest in it.

Sampling a cellar temp bottle poured into my snifter. The beer is a Christmas gift from my brother Curt. Thanks!
The beer pours a clear deep garnet hue with fizzy khaki colored head of .5 cm that fades to a sturdy edge layer and one wispy island fairly quickly after the pour into my glass.
The aroma is fruity and malty with a bit of brown caramel malt, red grapes, plums and a bit of cherry. There is a little booze which is surprising for 6%, but I dont get any hop notes.
First sip reveals an average body and fine tingly carbonation that rolls across my palate on each swallow. The flavor is sweet and malty as the nose advertised with a bit of caramel and dark fruit again. I get cherry and plums with some of the dry oak notes mentioned on the bottle. I dont get any hop notes nor booze at this point in the sampling. The beer does finish very dry and a bit of the dark fruit lingers after each sip. This is an interesting brew and very easy to drink. I think a little more alcohol boost would make for a more intense experience, but I dont dislike the beer and find the fruitiness enjoyable and tasty as I drain my glass.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a very dark amber color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of oak, malts, dark fruits. Taste is oak, cherries, malts, a bit of sugar. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a good beer, and at this abv, one I can easily drink several of.

Pennsylvania is slowly becoming more progressive with regard to its sale and control of alcoholic beverages. Many of our supermarkets now have "Cafes" in which beer may be purchased, even as singles (!) (gasp!). I picked this up at the Weis Market on the Lititz Pike during a recent excursion and it is a curiosity, if nothing else.

From the bottle: "Brick By Brick Microbrewery is where unexpected and interesting beers are born in small batches."; "The microbrewery is found in Klaipeda, in the old Svyturys brewery, famous for its brewing excellence."; "This beer is brewed with Belgian Cara Aroma, Munich II, Cara Munich, Pilsner malts. It is aged together with lightly toasted French oak chips, giving it a distinctive flavor. Mysterious and undiscovered like an Unknown Shore."

I Pop!ped the cap and began a very gentle pour, given that some previous reviewers mentioned haziness. My objective is clarity, each and every time. Sure enough, there were a good bit of lees at the bottom of the bottle & I will drnk them separately. A vigorous in-glass swirl raised a brief finger of foamy, light-tan head with modest retention. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity & ruby highlights. Gorgeous! Nose smelled really sweet and very alcoholic! Prevalent were dried dark fruit odors, like cherries and dates, especially. Mmmm. The mouthfeel was kind of thin, especially for the style. The taste was not bad, but it did not live up to its nose. The cherry flavor was more like an artificial flavoring than a product of the malt and yeast interacting. I definitely tasted the woodiness of the oak chips. Finish was semi-dry and slightly fruity. It was not bad, per se, but it needed some tweaking. Perhaps longer aging, maybe a higher ABV, I am not sure. It was decent for its price point, though.

Previously reviewed (9/2/2015) under Švyturys, but although it is brewed there, it is apparently under direction of Raudonų Plytų Alaus Dirbtuvės, so the review belongs here. Imported as "Unknown Shore". Pours a very hazy orange brown with a half finger khaki head that dissipates to a patchy film, leaving good lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, oak, brown sugar and dark dried fruit. Flavor malty with biscuit and caramel dominating, dark dried fruit, lighter hints of slightly tart fresh dark fruit, wood, brown sugar; finishes with drier earthy and woody malt and a bitter herbs. Medium bodied with good carbonation. The profile of Unknown Shore is much more similar to an old ale or Scottish ale, but with more finishing bitterness. There are almost no Belgian notes in the yeast, malt or spicing. As a malty dark ale, it has a lot of interesting flavors, but the finish is a bit too earthy, woody and bitter to be supported by the malt body. Oddest dubbel I've tried, but drinkable as a malty, woody ale.

Batch NK006 served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

I can understand why they changed the name for the American market: I doubt many would be able to pronounce the words above, whereas "Brick by Brick Unknown Shore" is pretty easy, especially in comparison. Regardless, this stuff pours a ruddy garnet topped by a finger of light tan foam. The nose comprises maple syrup, vague stonefruits and berries, mild wet oak, a bit of brown sugar, and a pinch of nutmeg. The taste brings in more of the same, with an underlying stratum made of dry yeast, a decent helping of banana peel, and a strangely pervasive sense of cheap (read: crappy) red wine. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slightly grainy feel. Overall, an interesting dubbel, but not one I would ever recommend having on its own merits. It was fine for the sale price my local store had applied to it to get rid of it (gotta use that shelf space for movers, guys!), but I'm likely never gonna have it again, and I don't feel a modicum of sadness about that fact.
