Beer foaming! Beer foaming! Uh oh! Running to sink! Spilling beer! Oh god, precious beer!

Alright, alright. Deep breaths. Everything's going to be ok....

Yes, <ahem> anyways...

This beer pours a cloudy, light yellow color. I like it to call it Hefeweizen yellow. Not too much head in mine. It dropped all over the floor and sink I suppose. Not altogether unappealing.

The smell, though, the smell...ahhh....sweet and yeasty. Wheaty too. Can effervescence be a smell? cause if it can, then this beer's got it. There's also a slight sourness, like a tiny presence of lemons. Extremely invitigng. I don't even want to drink it anymore, just smell it all night long, baby. Ok, maybe that's a lie. I confess. I do want to drink it.

I do drink it. And it's spritzy. very carbonated. And tangy. A little spicy, as any good wit should be, with a mild nutmeggy, cinnamony flavor. Very refreshing, and a great summertime beer. Much more full-bodied than Hoegaarden, which will you give you points with me everytime. I could drink a couple mroe of these and be pretty damn happy.

One of the "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die" -- #50 of the ones I've reviewed here.

There are a few Belgians that, at least in my neck of the woods (Philadelphia) seem to be omnipresent. I don't know why, they're not necessarily better or worse than any other Belgians, but for whatever reason if a bar or a restaurant or a beer store sells Belgians, they'll have these. Maybe its distribution?

One Belgian you can find throughout Philadelphia is Corsendonk, both it's dubbel and tripel. I had the dubbel yesterday and rather liked it, its a little less sweet and more "bracing" than other dubbels I've tried.

The one in the "1001" book is this, though, the tripel. Pours really wonderfully, a sort of brownish yellow that I suspect is hard to come by, because I don't see it all that often in tripels. The nose is flat, biggest disappointment of the beer IMHO, although after a bit you'll get dried fruits, alchohol, some citrus, a bit of honey. Mouthfeel is exceptionally soft, almost silky, though somehow it manages to retain its effervescence in the glass, no mean trick.

The flavors are about what you'd expect for the style: dried fruit (especially raisins or prunes), some xmas spice, a bit of citrus. A dry blast at the end makes this a bit crisper than other beers in the style (their dubbel has something of the same effect).

While I do think the nose is deficient all in all I think this is one of the better tripels out there, nothing overwhelmingly fancy but exceptionally well-made. Arguably a good entry point into the style, actually, due to its intrinsic competency.

Poured from bottle into tulip. Nice coloring, slightly hazy orange to golden amber, with a quickly dissipating two finger head. Aroma is grass and wheat. Taste increased in complexity as I drank the beer, I got a strong malt kick on my first sip and after a few more started picking up the wisps of fruit like pear apple and raisin. Towards the end I even started to pick up some honey and citrus. Overall an awesome
Tripel!
