This beer is very close to a schwarzbier in style. The flavor has the same roasted coffee characteristic as a schwarzbier, but with a little more sweetness and thicker mouthfeel than the benchmark. Thus, I agree with the Munich Dunkel Lager classification and feeel that this beer should satisfy fans of both styles.

Fans and detesters of the typical Iron City "sharpness" should be aware that the same after-taste is present in this brew that is also made by Pittsburgh Brewing. The higher malt content and darker roast really help to make for a very balanced flavor, though.

Served on draft as at Primanti Brothers in Greensburg, PA under it's alias, "Primanti Bros. Dark Lager".

Poured an opaque dark brown, almost black with a thin but persistent tan head. No real lacing. Very schwarzbier-like in appearance. Smell is dark malt, hints of roasted coffee. Lightly sweet.

Pretty tasty beer. The roastiness of the malt comes through nicely. Some sweetness in the malt, some coffee and caramel flavors. These flavors are all a bit muted. The mouth is thin but not watery. It's really a fairly tasty dark lager, at least on draft. Check it out if you are in the Pittsburgh area. And grab a sandwich at Primanti Brothers too...

12 oz brown bottle.

Appearance is a nice dark brown color with a pretty good head and decent retention.

Smell is sweet with malt and roasted malt aromas.

Taste is also nice and malty, sweet with a slightly roasted, bitter touch at the end. Clean.

Mouthfeel is pretty good, fairly light body with a clean, smooth feeling.

Overall a nice, flavorful yet light-bodied beer that probably is fairly low ABV and would be a pretty nice session beer or pairing with food.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is average. It has a very dry musty lager yeast scent with very little malt scent to speak of. The taste is average also. It has a dry and grainy pale and crystal malt flavor with hints of chocolate. It goes down dry and finishes dry with a musty aftertaste. The mouthfeel is average. It is a medium bodied beer with a little too much carbonation. This is an average dark lager at best. It is too dry and light on the malt flavor. It needs more body and less carbonation.

Appereance: Poured a nice, very dark dark amber with a bubbly beige head.

Smell: The smell is incredibly metallic. I don't know how to describe it other than malts made of metal.

Taste and Mouthfeel: The taste, while incredibly waterered down, is a very malt focused mix of fruitiness and sweetness. Although that core flavor is fine, it's ridiuclously weak, bland, ugly, and fake. This beer doesn't taste real at all to me. The mouthfeel is watered down as all hell.

Drinkability and Overall: I remember liking this beer before I learned what "real" beer was. My buddy left a few here and I figured I'd re-review one for the hell of it. It's even more of a gabage beer now than I remember it being. AVOID.

Pours a dark hue somewhere between brown and ruby-red, with a half-inch tan head that dissipates fairly quickly. Assertive aroma of roasted malt, some coffee, and diacetyl. Palate is sweet malt all the way through, with notes of brown sugar, raisin, and plum, and no discernable hop presence. Nice, full body for a lager. I could get used to drinking this, especially when it's on sale for $3.99/6pk.

The beer poured clear deep brown with amber highlights. The head was tan and fell quickly to the edges of the surface, but laced the glass.

The aroma was sweet, overly so. Some deep caramel and fruity notes were present. There was a definite diacetyl in the aroma.

The flavor was fruity with caramel and a diacetyl presence. Also present was a slight chocolate flavor and a slight dark fruit flavor. The sweetness in the flavor was not well balanced by the bittering and detracted.

The finish was even with diacetyl lasting, but not overpowering. The body was medium.

12 ounce bottle. A drinkable beer, but not clean and missing crispness. Diacetyl is an issue with lagers and the sweetness in the flavor is not well done.

Not exactly a craft bewed Dark Beer but still reasonably drinkable. I thought the regular Augustiner was a better presentation than the Dark. When it's poured, it looks very nice - chocolatey dark with a nice head. But the head fades very quickly and the overall taste is rather a weak one when compared to many of the craft Darks. If nothing else, I give Pittsburgh Brewing credit for producing something other than a golden lager even though it only turned out to be an average product at best.

This Pittsburgh Brewing creation pours a deep ruby brown tone with a somewhat nice head, until it fizzles out to nothing in a few seconds after the pour with relatively no lace. Aroma has some faint chocolate dark roasted malt tones with a pleasantly sharp sweetness there. Taste is kind of harsh to swallow down the carbonation just makes it a hard to swallow but there are some dumbed tone good flavors here namingly just the dark roasts and a fruit toned mild malt sweetness in the finish not too bad, better than I expected. Mouthfeel is pretty thin for a dunkel and the carbonation is a little to high in my opinion. Drinkability is okay couldn't and wouldn't chill with a sixer of this stuff, but one or two every once in awhile when there are no better options then it's alright.

An exceptionally dark brown liquid pours out of the bottle, topped by a tan head that fades rather quickly. A light roasted malt aroma greets the nose as you lift the beer to your lips. The taste is suprisingly light, with just a touch of sweet roastiness leading to a very clean finish. Slight roasted notes on the aftertaste as well. The mouthfeel is a little too harsh and a bit thin. Drinkability is decent, as it does finish clean and is not offensive. I think this actually tastes a little better out of the bottle, although I know it's not likely. Just seems to have more roasted flavor. And yes, it is in bottles, has been for a while. Was originally draft only. A decent alternative to the typical macro, but not a craft beer by any means.

This beer, offered only in draught, is Pittsburgh Brewing Company's selction of a Porter/Dark Lager. Dark, almost black body with thick foamy head. Moderatly carbonated.

Rich roasted aroma with hint of cooked veggie. Tastes dark roasted, almost burnt. Off flavor with too much sweetness from adjunct. Slight bitter aftertaste.
