I had this at the Old Chicago.

It poured a clear gold with a 1 finger head of foam that receded quickly to just some spotting.

The smell was of light malty notes and a good presence of spicy hops.

The taste was pretty nice. Some sweet malt, bread, grain, that put together, placed it on the sweet side but there was some decent hop character to balance out the sweetness and made it pretty darned drinkable. It had a light mouthfeel and it finished fairly crisp and dry. I think this would make a very good beer to session on.

A: Pour two and a half fingers of slightly off-white head that fairly quickly dissipates. Head retention is minimal, with not much lacing at all. Beer is hazier and darker than many pilsners I've tried with an almost sunset yellow color. Carbonation is less than expected.

S: Definitely has the pilsner nose, but with more. The malt can be detected a great deal more than in most beers of the style. While the same grassy and hoppy notes are present, there is a sweetness and minerality in the nose that isn't in most pilsners I've tried. It's surprising, and good.

T: The same mineral notes are very prevalent throughout the beer. Grass and grain lead the way when sipped, followed by subtle malty tones and tart, under ripe fruit. The hop bitterness caries this through the finish, with citric and herbal/vegetal tones appearing. The aftertaste is minerality and diacetyl (green apples). Very refreshing. This seems like it'd be a great food beer.

M: Pilsner body. Fully carbonated without being aggressive in its seltzer qualities.

D: Pilsner. Crush it. Drink it all night. Not high enough in alcohol to get you in trouble unless you're a real jackass and tasty enough to drink with enjoyment.

Coppery golden with a soft and foamy pure white head that leaves fine lace on the glass. Smells of grassy, slightly menthol/mint hops with rich grain. Tastes rich and smooth with fresh bready malt and grassy saaz hops. Light bodied and refreshing with nice hop bittering in the finish. A great session beer and way underrated IMO.

This beer pours a clear golden color with a finger of white foamy head that leaves some lacing on the way down. The aroma is strong with caramel malt. The taste starts with the caramel sweetness and then becomes slightly bitter and then finishes with more malty sweetness. The mouthfeel is very smooth and crisp. Overall a great beer to have some sausage and kraut with.

If there's any question as to what Saaz hops give to a finished beer, well then... here you go.

Zatec begins with a dark straw / golden color that carries a white pillow of foam while showing light lacing and good retention. The beer has a mild haze despite the lable boasting the term 'bright'.

The soft pilsner malt profile is bready, rich, and has light notes of fresh yeast. Craker-like and with a subtle smoothness, the malts don't show the graininess that most lagers do. But the hops holds the success of this beer. Quite elegant, earthy, spicy, floral, and bitter; this beer may be a single-source hopped beer- the fingerprints of Saaz hops is all over it. The balance of the beer neither favor the malt or hops but the blend of both give a long lingering impression of spice and bitterness.

The body is medium but seems higher as the carbonation disipates. Malt sweetness and light kettle caramelizaiton also gives a bit of weight to the beer while adding complexity. Quite earthy and with a bitter and dry finish.

This is quite a tasty beer that showcases the Zatec (Saaz hop growing reigon) very well.

Thanks goes out to Bitterbill for this brew.

Poured into a mug a very nice clean/clear golden yellow color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger creamy white head, with some nice sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, slight hop, fruity. The taste is sweet, malty, slight hop notes, and some nice fruityness. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a very tasty brew, glad to have had a chance to try it.

In the beer wasteland that is Southern-Southern Minnesota (yes Southern-Southern), I decided to do a little exploring into foriegn beers to pass the week.

Zatec pours a medium gold color with the slightest hint of haziness and a very lively carbonation. White head has great retention and leaves tons of lacing.

The aroma is biscuity and bready malts up front, with grassy and spicey hops and herbal notes.

The taste is more malty than hoppy, with sweet and bready malts dominating, with a nice balancing spicey hop character. Grassy hops and doughy bready malts. There is also a banana like character going on.

Medium body with a clean and crisp feel. Nothing out of the ordinary, and just right. Drinkability is great.

The farther along I get in my beer travels, and as my taste buds evolve more and more, I find myself appreciating the simple things, like great Pilsners. This is one of those. Head over heels better than any macro Pilsner out there that I've ever tried.

The surprise favorite (by a long shot) of the weekend.

A: Zatec pours a brilliant dark straw color, with a foamy white head that settles quickly, and leaves just a thin film on the surface.

S: Malty, with biscuit and honey, with a fruity, floral hop aroma. Still displays some of that "Euro" character.

T: Floral and fruity hop character to begin with, but the sweet malt shines through with hints of biscuit, sweet corn, and some apple. The hops kick in again, giving the beer a dry, clean finish.

M: Light bodied, but has a long finish. Dry and very crisp.

D: Very mild for this style. Zatec is extremely easy to drink, and very sessionable.

Purchased from Biggs Beer Wine and Tobacco in Vancouver WA.

Poured into a pils glass from a 500ml bottle.

Pours a clean yellow gold with light white head.

Aroma is great. I love the floral smell of Saaz hops and before it was done pouring I could smell it jumping into my nostrils. Hmmm.

Flavor is great, just what I would expect from the Czechs a rich but smooth maltiness witch a touch of bitter tones and spice from those hops.

Overall: This is a clean classic pilsner that is complex, balanced and refreshing. Put this on you pils list!!

Prost!

Gusher out of the bottle scared me for a moment.

A - Slightly hazy golden with a fluffy white head that retreats to a few lines of lace.

S - Bready with fresh yeast notes and a cracker like maltiness. Earthy, spicy and floral hops balance it out nicely.

T - Floral and spicy hops with a bready malt balance. Doughy bread, hints of honey and a lingering minerally finish.

M - The sweet malt probably put it a bit closer to medium than light with good carbonation and a lingering dry mineral finish.

D - A bit towards the malty side but fairly balanced and tasty. A nice surprise.

I picked this bottle up yesterday towards reviewing all 104 styles. My buddy (Naugros on this site) recommended Zatec as one of the better styles.

When I opened the bottle, I got a ton of Saaz hop smell from the top. I poured it into a pint glass and got a pretty decent amount of light foam from the top. The beer is a bright golden with lots of tiny bubbles coming up.

The saaz hopping continues off the top and in each sip. There is a lot of flavor in this. Also, I get a little bit of sweetness on my pallatte.

I don't normally drink czech pilsners. This seems like a really good example of one. This is a far better option than Pilsner Urquel.

Gold/ honey color. Initial soft barley aroma on the pour that diminishes with subsequent smelling. Thin white creamy head that also diminishes fairly soon. Clean and mildly rich barley flavor with a minty hop finish. The mouth feel is medium bodied - soft. I like this beer and would buy it again, but I do not think it stands even with the Czech all-stars; however it is a cousin to them. Better than a lot of the Czech beer I explored just to find the cheapest beer deal in the Czech Republic.

Great Czech beer in an amber bottle. Classic grainy bitter sweet profile. Bright (like the label says) lager. Nice head with plenty of lace. Very good carbonation. good bittersweet finish too. And a good session beer if this is your style. Clear yellow gold color. Extra clean character.

500 mL bottle tried 26 Mar 2010.

An explosive head tries to fight it's way out of the bottle immediately upon opening, completely fills the Twisted Pine shaker pint. Head is off white, creamy. Beer is clear light golden color. Aroma is lightly sweet, mineraly, touch of hay. Flaor is light but good, grainy, mineraly, with a touch of melon. Slight bit of spiciness. Bittersweet finish. Light body.

Overall very refreshing and held up well (this was sitting in the back of the beer fridge for several months before being sampled).

Pours a very light yellow honey color with a nice white head.

Nose is a light floral grapefruit with hints of light pine and light white bread/yeast.

Very pleasant light hop/yeast flavors with actually a nice balance; crisp, clean although somewhat short in the finish. Relatively simple character and flavor.

A bit light/thin/weak for my taste but very fresh and clean tasting.

Medium gold color thats got a slight haze to it and lots of bubbly action within that retains its firmly set cappinf of stark white foam everpresent. Lacing coats with some thickly set spots and shortened strings.

Aroma is a bit musty/mushy/musky of dull wheaty breadish doughy malt with just a ever so slight pull of Saaz hop grassyness.

More malt then hops this is adequately nice to the taste buds with a clean yet mushy mash of breadish doughy maltyness thats not light nor heavy and lifts off into the finish with just a slight nudge to some grassy hops and dryish croissant dough.

Body is just under medium but keeps a well distributed malty base of doughyness thats clean and puffy with tender breadyness within. Simple, clean inviting finish thats just crisp enough to keep it within reach of a new sip.

A quiet Czech Pils that has more malt then most, but I liked it either way and is a solid sessionable brew that stands on its own over most, if not all, macro type lagers or Pils.
