look: 3.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 5

Poured from a 16.9 oz Euro bottle purchased on 06/01/10. No freshness date noted.

Rich and a slightly darker golden in color, this pilsner poured out with solid effervescence and an okay head which ultimately left nice yet delicate lacing along the side of the glass.

Aromas wafting of the Czech Saaz hops. Crisp and clean in the nose. Subtle yet definable.

Smooth on the palate, the balance between the malts and Saaz hops work together hand in hand. While so many representations of pilsners (both Czech and German) tend to be overly sweet or hoppy, the level ground Zatec has found with this classic speaks to the true definition of a Bohemian Pilsner.

Quaffable to say the least, by the time this bottle was gone, I was ready for more. And at 4.6% ABV, this beer will be a mainstay in my arsenal for a long time.

Na zdraví!

Appearance - Clear straw body. White one finger head with decent retention.

Smell - Skunky as hell. Corn meal or hominy.

Taste - Metallic. Bad. Corn meal or something.

Mouthfeel - Smooth and full bodied with good carbonation.

Overall - I could not enjoy this beer. The taste is fatally flawed by that off flavor.

Average in every respect .
It has a sourness , that can be a downfall for my palate in Pilsners ,which is the most remarkable thing about this beer.
it is pleasnt and enjoyable but very ho hum middle of the road.
Many others offer greater delights in the fascinating world of Czech Pilsners

Got this 500mL bottle from Hoosick Beverage in Troy NY for $3.99. Served cold in a chilled pint glass.

This clear straw yellow brew initially gives an inch of eggshell head that sticks around quite well, settling to after a few minutes to a thin whispy layer and a thick meniscus around the glass. Pretty good, for what it is. Leaves a respectable amount of lace throughout the session.

Smell is a bit of pungent pilsner skunk on a hearty background of thick raw grains and silage with a tiny bit of diacetyl. The skunk fades eventually to reveal a little metallic twang and more sweet-ish silage.

The dry finish is of lightly buttered corn. Mouthfeel is light/ light-moderate (3 out of 10) thickness, slightly zingy carbonation. Taste is pretty unremarkable, I guess a bit of caramel and silage.

look: 3 | smell: 2 | taste: 2.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 2.5

Appearance- Pours a crystal clear light to medium gold, supporting a 2 finger white head with little retention. No lacing at all.

Smell- Lots of corn-vegital aromas. Some continental hops come through, but I am fearful.

Taste- Fortunately, it tastes much better then it smells. Nice but subdued , malt sweetness, with a hint of hop bitterness. Hop bitterness no where near enough for a Pils, but it ain't awful.

Mouthfeel- The mouthfeel is an odd combination. This is one of the softest beers I've ever had. (Glorious). It's also a tad under-carbonated. The soft, mild body is almost worth buying the beer by itself.

Drinkability- Not great, but not absolutely wretched.

This beer pours a clear golden color with a finger of white foamy head that leaves some lacing on the way down. The aroma is strong with caramel malt. The taste starts with the caramel sweetness and then becomes slightly bitter and then finishes with more malty sweetness. The mouthfeel is very smooth and crisp. Overall a great beer to have some sausage and kraut with.

T- Refreshing, hoppy and citric, but not overly so.

M- Thin in body, but well carbonated.

D- Good for a nice warm day, but not as good as other Czech Pilseners.

500ml->Large Foster's Glass

A ~ The color of dead bermuda grass. Like a Gold with a green hue. Head settles rather quick. Beautiful carbonation that's stays the entire glass. Tight lacing.

S ~ Saaz (spicy-earth) and kneaded dough with a slight floral aroma almost like a daisy.

T ~ Very herby (like oregano & dried parsley) with alot of fresh bread notes. Nice bit of arugula as well, but Mostly herb-bread characteristic through and through. A scattered apple flavor is in there as well. A warm cereal character also on the finish, Like peppered porridge.

M ~ Good mouthfeel at first, but the finish is sort of grainy and sticky. Takes away from it, especially on hot days like today.

D ~ Pretty good bohemian Pilsner. True to the style with a decent amount of hops. Good lager for ale fans who need a break from "bigger" beers.

A: Pour two and a half fingers of slightly off-white head that fairly quickly dissipates. Head retention is minimal, with not much lacing at all. Beer is hazier and darker than many pilsners I've tried with an almost sunset yellow color. Carbonation is less than expected.

S: Definitely has the pilsner nose, but with more. The malt can be detected a great deal more than in most beers of the style. While the same grassy and hoppy notes are present, there is a sweetness and minerality in the nose that isn't in most pilsners I've tried. It's surprising, and good.

T: The same mineral notes are very prevalent throughout the beer. Grass and grain lead the way when sipped, followed by subtle malty tones and tart, under ripe fruit. The hop bitterness caries this through the finish, with citric and herbal/vegetal tones appearing. The aftertaste is minerality and diacetyl (green apples). Very refreshing. This seems like it'd be a great food beer.

M: Pilsner body. Fully carbonated without being aggressive in its seltzer qualities.

D: Pilsner. Crush it. Drink it all night. Not high enough in alcohol to get you in trouble unless you're a real jackass and tasty enough to drink with enjoyment.

500 mL bottle that was on sale for half price, which never really bodes well... I'm guessing it's 50 years old. With no bottling date, I can't know thought, so I'll just go with it.

A - Pours an odd murky yellow, like the piss of a dehydrated person. Wimpy head.

S - Skunky and sweet. Sickly sweet. Not good at all.

T - Like sugar water poured into a soapy glass. This is horrifying. There is a touchy of something resembling breadyness, but nothing worth noting.

M - Light body, and just so impossibly watery. It really feels like water. Carbonation unnoticeable.

O - I think I'm going to be sick. This must have been the cause of Slovakia's split with the Czech Republic.

I can't imagine this is what this is meant to taste like. Something must be wrong with the bottle. Neat cap for my collection, though.

pours with a respectable pils head. lacing is damn fine! .. smell is of a fresh picked hop and honey corn flakes ... refreshing drink, good amount of bitters .... Not bad, would love to try fresh on tap! Goes down smooth but there is something just a tad off about it that makes it a good beer and not a great one..

500 ml bottle poured into pilsener glass. Suprised to find this at the "3rd best" beer store in my area, after never seeing it at the other too. Am a fan of Czech Pilseners, so I tried it.

A - Pours a dim peach-orange color with some haze. Not much of a head. Large amounts of carbonation rising from the bottom. Not a bad looking beer.

S - Malt, and very unique for a pilsener, some peach, apricot, and even a bit of lime. Very unique.

T - Smooth maltiness, and the fruitness mentioned in the aroma's is there, too. Very unique. Lot's of peach (and not in an artificial, nasty way) and apricot. Finishes smooth with a nice flavor.

F - Very crisp and clean, leaves just a bit of dryness. Could certainly session this beer.

O - Nothing outstanding, but it's a good pilsener. One of the more unique pilsener's I've tried, considering the light fruity flavors. Light and crisp but plenty of flavor. Again, not outstanding, but a good pilsener.

Gold color, with a thin white head that fades quickly, leaving some thin patches and a ring around the perimeter.
Smell is lightly spiced, bready malts with a very subtle touch of roasted malts and and buttery notes. Little bit of grassy hops in there.
Taste very lightly spiced malts with some faint grassy hops. Touch of spices towards the finish. A bit lackluster at the finish.
Mouthfeel is fairly smooth, with a little bit of crispness at the finish. Light body.
Drinkability is good. Nothing too exciting, but it drinks easily enough.

Found this in a VT general store. not too shabby.

A: Decent tight head. Not the prettiest color. It's a little dark. Just enough to make it look off.

S: Muted czech hops. A little sharpness in there.

T: I can see how people wouldn't be fond of this, but i found it intriguing. Not a light pils. Caramel down the tongue, ends with butterscotch.

M: Not bad. Once again, full for a pils.

D: Surprisingly so. Dunno if they threw some vienna in there but i could go for a few more of these.

1.9 pint brown bottle poured into Brooklyn pokal.

A - a slightly hazy brazen color. a good forming head, bright white, that quickly thins down to a whispy layer on top.

S - a light smell of citrus, concentrating on orange peel, and some grain like sweetness.

T - bitter hops are right out front, while the faint grain/malty sweetness lingers in the back. the malts stick around for the finish and dominate that area of the tasting process, while the primary after taste is a bitter and cereal-like taste. not a very complicated beer, and the hops are not very prevalent. I haven't a clue as to why this was on the great beers display along with westmalle and samuel smith.

MF&D - the feel is slightly thicker and heavier than water, and the lack of carbonation makes the beer feel quite dull over all. I would preferably find another beer rather than have another one of these.

Zatec Bright Lager pours a bright golden amber with a small fizzy head that disappears as quickly as it appears. Scores of surprisingly large bubbles cling to the sides of the glass before racing towards the top. Within the brew are visible a few streams of finer bubbles, which seem to rise more gradually. Festive.

Very appetizing roasted malt dominates the nose. Hop presence is surprisingly minimal. Yeast aromas are present, as is a slightly tinny smell.

Right away I can tell that I am going to feel conflicted about the taste of this beer. The sweet roasted malt is overpowering. Shouldn't Czech Pilsners be crisp and clean? This one isn't. But the yeast strain has produced a buttery flavor that is one of the best I've tasted in recent years, and although the hops are overpowered, there is something delicious about this beer. The hops begin to show their bitterness about half way through. Their aroma, however, remains just out of my palate's reach.

The mouthfeel is nice. It is a bit more viscous than I expect from a Pilsner, but the viscosity does complement the malty character nicely.

Zatec comes up short when compared with other commercially available Czech Pilsners. But it is a delicious beer that I have bought before and will buy again.
