500 ml bottle poured into pilsener glass. Suprised to find this at the "3rd best" beer store in my area, after never seeing it at the other too. Am a fan of Czech Pilseners, so I tried it.

A - Pours a dim peach-orange color with some haze. Not much of a head. Large amounts of carbonation rising from the bottom. Not a bad looking beer.

S - Malt, and very unique for a pilsener, some peach, apricot, and even a bit of lime. Very unique.

T - Smooth maltiness, and the fruitness mentioned in the aroma's is there, too. Very unique. Lot's of peach (and not in an artificial, nasty way) and apricot. Finishes smooth with a nice flavor.

F - Very crisp and clean, leaves just a bit of dryness. Could certainly session this beer.

O - Nothing outstanding, but it's a good pilsener. One of the more unique pilsener's I've tried, considering the light fruity flavors. Light and crisp but plenty of flavor. Again, not outstanding, but a good pilsener.

Poured this Czech style Pilsener from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. This Pilsener poured a clear golden color, produced an average white head and featured below average retention and left very little lacing on the glass. The aroma consisted off fresh baked bread, and grassy hops. Medium in body, this Pilsener had a base of malted husky malted grain, touch of lemon citrus, white pepper and bitter hops. Decent example of a Czech Pilsener, I believe this to be pretty authentic. Prost!

A- pours a golden straw color with a small white fizzy head and no lace.

S- some floral hop, clean grass, and sweet malt

T- clean malt with some yeast strain, floral hops and just a bit of lemongrass

M- light-med body, low-med carbonation, foamy mouthfeel, a bit of yeasty chalkiness in the finish

O- this one is clean and drinkable, nothing special but not bad.

Zatec Bright Lager pours a bright golden amber with a small fizzy head that disappears as quickly as it appears. Scores of surprisingly large bubbles cling to the sides of the glass before racing towards the top. Within the brew are visible a few streams of finer bubbles, which seem to rise more gradually. Festive.

Very appetizing roasted malt dominates the nose. Hop presence is surprisingly minimal. Yeast aromas are present, as is a slightly tinny smell.

Right away I can tell that I am going to feel conflicted about the taste of this beer. The sweet roasted malt is overpowering. Shouldn't Czech Pilsners be crisp and clean? This one isn't. But the yeast strain has produced a buttery flavor that is one of the best I've tasted in recent years, and although the hops are overpowered, there is something delicious about this beer. The hops begin to show their bitterness about half way through. Their aroma, however, remains just out of my palate's reach.

The mouthfeel is nice. It is a bit more viscous than I expect from a Pilsner, but the viscosity does complement the malty character nicely.

Zatec comes up short when compared with other commercially available Czech Pilsners. But it is a delicious beer that I have bought before and will buy again.

Not really a great looking beer, but that kinda goes with the style. Slightly dark, not straw-colored like I expected, more of a standard pale ale color. Pale orange, like the skin of a nectarine. There's a foamy head for a while, but it doesn't have a lot of retention, though it leaves a thin ring up top.

I've not cared for the pilsner style, but after having a Czechvar, it's growing on me. This is one of the first characteristics that distinguishes the Czechs from the Americans in the pilsner game. This has a grainy smell, but has nice compliments of floral and citrus.

The different tastes are subtle and may not stand up to any food you might be eating. Pilsner malts dominate and while the hops carry over from the smell, the floral and citric notes are very muted.

Very loose, watered down feel. Little body. Slightly acidic, faintly bitter finish.

Nothing to write home about. More or less a session beer as far as I'm concerned. Better than American macros, but only by a bit. Not bad, merely average.

Poured into a stange glass.

A-Golden yellow, bubbly head that dissipated into a thin, white surface. Decent lacing on the glass. Looked like a pilsner lager!

S-Grains, wheat, malt, and a little caramel. There was not a lot going on in the smell.

T-Unlike the smell, the taste had more to it. I could taste sweet caramel malt, czech hops, a crisp finish with an aftertaste of cloves, spice, and salt and pepper. Very refreshing.

M-Light feeling with carbonation on the moderate/high side. Not sticky, just right for this style.

Overall-Great sessionable beer for anytime. Great with any type of food. The Czech's know what they are doing.

one of the classic czech pilseners. pours clear pale golden color with a one inch white head that is gone instantly. smells meadowy, floral and grassy, malt driven but balanced. flavor really features the czech malts, they are light and grainy, very pleasant in all seasons. some mild hops on the finish, which is very crisp and dry as can be. mouthfeel is good for what it is, obviously very light on the body, but still with plenty of flavor, excellent carbonation. overall this is a nicely balanced and very drinkable pils, exemplary of the czech style, and usually widely available at a reasonable price.

Poured into a fluted pilsener glass. The beer is a really pure golden color. A fizzy white head sits on top and dissipates to a nice even thin layer. Foamy, light lacing coats the glass. The smell is bright and clean, somewhat malty with a grassy touch. The beer tastes very clean and refreshing. There is a good balance here between malt and hops, the maltiness coming first, followed by a clean, slightly drier hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium-light with some carbonation.

Overall, this is what a beer should taste like. This is clean, refreshing, and to borrow a phrase from Amstel Light, "it tastes like beer." I wish this was available in 12 packs where i am, because I could session this every summer weekend. Highly impressed.

I tried this brew a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I've never been able to find it since -- till now. Let's hope it's the same as I remember.

$3.30 500 ml brown bottle.

A -- Hmm, gusher on opening, never a great sign. Hazy god to dark straw color with a pretty thin white cap (maybe the majority of carbonation went on the floor and into the sink). A vigorous pour of the last few ounces in the bottle yields a denser head, yet it still settles quickly

S -- Light, but rich bready malts with a mild spicy hoppiness back. Even a touch of resins and fusel.

T -- Light bready malts that blend into a mellow citrus, spicy hop blend. Dry, bitter finish and aftertaste, light bready sweetness and some of that light citrus character in the aftertaste too.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft to nearly syrupy with a high-medium body.

O -- Overall, I think this is an old bottle. I certainly didn't have a gusher on the first one I tried a few years ago (I would have never been looking for it again) and the resiny hop character is not very smooth. No freshness dating to be found on the labels.

I picked this bottle up yesterday towards reviewing all 104 styles. My buddy (Naugros on this site) recommended Zatec as one of the better styles.

When I opened the bottle, I got a ton of Saaz hop smell from the top. I poured it into a pint glass and got a pretty decent amount of light foam from the top. The beer is a bright golden with lots of tiny bubbles coming up.

The saaz hopping continues off the top and in each sip. There is a lot of flavor in this. Also, I get a little bit of sweetness on my pallatte.

I don't normally drink czech pilsners. This seems like a really good example of one. This is a far better option than Pilsner Urquel.

500mL bottle, with code of "961000" on back label. not sure what that means.

appears a clear pale golden color with bright white head. some lacing. aroma of pale malt and grassy hops.

taste is fairly flavorful. a bit bready. hops are earthy, with a touch of spice. body is a bit more substantial than most pilsners, dry aftertaste. medium carbonation level is fairly smooth.

overall - much better than expected, my first Czech Pilsener.

Pale yellow with lots of foam. Carbonation remained steady throughout.
The nose and flavor profiles pretty much were as I expected.
Pale malts, saaz hops (hoppy, but not overly so), and just a hint of diacetyl creaminess.
My bottle was gone before I knew it and while I didn’t specifically crave another, I can certainly imagine going back for glass after glass.
While it’s certainly good, I find that it’s not really all that different than the cheaper and more ubiquitous Pilsner Urquell. That’s certainly not a bad thing, and it’s probably a fine illustration for how consistently good Czech pilsners are on the whole.
While my score tends to say this isn't anything special, there are no issues either. I tend to think that with the lighter Czech beers I have yet to have a beer that blows the others away. I've had German pale beers that have, so I'm going to have to hunt for a Czech one...Kout perhaps?

Out of a bottle this Czech Pilsner was a clear, 24k gold color, just as it should be. The white was only a thin layer but the retention was good and the lacing in fishnets that lasted all the way down my glass. The aroma was of Saaz hops, crystal malt and a bit of sweet malt. The flavors were clean and crisp, though not overwhelming. I tasted the pleasant Pilsner malts, bready grains and some lemon grass and herbal notes from the Saaz hops. Nothing was big about this beer it was well-balanced. The mouthfeel was smooth but slick, the body medium and the carbonation light. Very pleasant albeit non-distinct.

Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a pilsener glass.

A: Poured a pale golden color with about 2 fingers worth of head that settled to a ring with very little lacing.

S: Very bready smelling.... I'm also getting a little wheat and yeast.

T: Straight up bready malt, with a small touch of hops... very small...

M: Light body with a pretty lively carbonation. Pretty crisp.

D: Very easy to drink with the low ABV and light body, but there just not much flavor here. Pretty bland.

Poured a 2" white head. Clear straw yellow color with slowly lifting bubbles revealing a thick than lager average body. Very light malt smell. Taste too is quite light and although not dramatically different from BMCs it has more richness and is clearly an edge above. There's a decent pleasant bitter hops finish which lasts. Label says they've been brewing since 1004 and I see why they're still going strong.

A - Pours with two fingers of white foam on top of a golden body with excellent clarity. The head sticks around for a while before fading into a thin film that leaves light lacing on the glass.

S - Grainy, sweet honey malt with lots of honey and graham cracker character. There is also a note of herbal European hop character in the background.

T - Light, grainy malt up front with some grassy hops. More malt sweetness show up in the middle as hop bitterness begins to push back. Grassy hops and light malt in the finish with moderate bitterness.

M - Medium body, moderately high carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - Very nicely done. One never knows what to expect with unknown beers from Europe, bit this one turned out to be a pleasant surprise. A rich malty aroma turns into a light, grainy flavor profile with more than enough hop character to keep it balanced. Very drinkable and a nice example of the style.

500ml->Large Foster's Glass

A ~ The color of dead bermuda grass. Like a Gold with a green hue. Head settles rather quick. Beautiful carbonation that's stays the entire glass. Tight lacing.

S ~ Saaz (spicy-earth) and kneaded dough with a slight floral aroma almost like a daisy.

T ~ Very herby (like oregano & dried parsley) with alot of fresh bread notes. Nice bit of arugula as well, but Mostly herb-bread characteristic through and through. A scattered apple flavor is in there as well. A warm cereal character also on the finish, Like peppered porridge.

M ~ Good mouthfeel at first, but the finish is sort of grainy and sticky. Takes away from it, especially on hot days like today.

D ~ Pretty good bohemian Pilsner. True to the style with a decent amount of hops. Good lager for ale fans who need a break from "bigger" beers.

PROSiT!

500 mL bottle that was on sale for half price, which never really bodes well... I'm guessing it's 50 years old. With no bottling date, I can't know thought, so I'll just go with it.

A - Pours an odd murky yellow, like the piss of a dehydrated person. Wimpy head.

S - Skunky and sweet. Sickly sweet. Not good at all.

T - Like sugar water poured into a soapy glass. This is horrifying. There is a touchy of something resembling breadyness, but nothing worth noting.

M - Light body, and just so impossibly watery. It really feels like water. Carbonation unnoticeable.

O - I think I'm going to be sick. This must have been the cause of Slovakia's split with the Czech Republic.

I can't imagine this is what this is meant to taste like. Something must be wrong with the bottle. Neat cap for my collection, though.

A: Clear, golden color with a white head 4 fingers high that had a nice amount of lacing. Lots of bubbles streaming from the bottom of the glass.

S: Crisp and floral hop aromas are dominant, with a citrus or lemony character. Very little in malt aromas, but there is a touch of malt sweetness smell.

T: Taste was clean and mainly about the mild hop bitterness. Something also had a souring aspect that was unpleasant.
