Thanks goes out to Bitterbill for this brew.

Poured into a mug a very nice clean/clear golden yellow color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger creamy white head, with some nice sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, slight hop, fruity. The taste is sweet, malty, slight hop notes, and some nice fruityness. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a very tasty brew, glad to have had a chance to try it. (401 characters)

In the beer wasteland that is Southern-Southern Minnesota (yes Southern-Southern), I decided to do a little exploring into foriegn beers to pass the week.

Zatec pours a medium gold color with the slightest hint of haziness and a very lively carbonation. White head has great retention and leaves tons of lacing.

The aroma is biscuity and bready malts up front, with grassy and spicey hops and herbal notes.

The taste is more malty than hoppy, with sweet and bready malts dominating, with a nice balancing spicey hop character. Grassy hops and doughy bready malts. There is also a banana like character going on.

Medium body with a clean and crisp feel. Nothing out of the ordinary, and just right. Drinkability is great.

The farther along I get in my beer travels, and as my taste buds evolve more and more, I find myself appreciating the simple things, like great Pilsners. This is one of those. Head over heels better than any macro Pilsner out there that I've ever tried.

The surprise favorite (by a long shot) of the weekend. (1,035 characters)

Purchased from Biggs Beer Wine and Tobacco in Vancouver WA.

Poured into a pils glass from a 500ml bottle.

Pours a clean yellow gold with light white head.

Aroma is great. I love the floral smell of Saaz hops and before it was done pouring I could smell it jumping into my nostrils. Hmmm.

Flavor is great, just what I would expect from the Czechs a rich but smooth maltiness witch a touch of bitter tones and spice from those hops.

Overall: This is a clean classic pilsner that is complex, balanced and refreshing. Put this on you pils list!!

Prost! (554 characters)

Gusher out of the bottle scared me for a moment.

A - Slightly hazy golden with a fluffy white head that retreats to a few lines of lace.

S - Bready with fresh yeast notes and a cracker like maltiness. Earthy, spicy and floral hops balance it out nicely.

T - Floral and spicy hops with a bready malt balance. Doughy bread, hints of honey and a lingering minerally finish.

M - The sweet malt probably put it a bit closer to medium than light with good carbonation and a lingering dry mineral finish.

D - A bit towards the malty side but fairly balanced and tasty. A nice surprise. (584 characters)

I picked this bottle up yesterday towards reviewing all 104 styles. My buddy (Naugros on this site) recommended Zatec as one of the better styles.

When I opened the bottle, I got a ton of Saaz hop smell from the top. I poured it into a pint glass and got a pretty decent amount of light foam from the top. The beer is a bright golden with lots of tiny bubbles coming up.

The saaz hopping continues off the top and in each sip. There is a lot of flavor in this. Also, I get a little bit of sweetness on my pallatte.

I don't normally drink czech pilsners. This seems like a really good example of one. This is a far better option than Pilsner Urquel. (653 characters)

A: Zatec pours a brilliant dark straw color, with a foamy white head that settles quickly, and leaves just a thin film on the surface.

S: Malty, with biscuit and honey, with a fruity, floral hop aroma. Still displays some of that "Euro" character.

T: Floral and fruity hop character to begin with, but the sweet malt shines through with hints of biscuit, sweet corn, and some apple. The hops kick in again, giving the beer a dry, clean finish.

M: Light bodied, but has a long finish. Dry and very crisp.

D: Very mild for this style. Zatec is extremely easy to drink, and very sessionable. (594 characters)

500 mL bottle tried 26 Mar 2010.

An explosive head tries to fight it's way out of the bottle immediately upon opening, completely fills the Twisted Pine shaker pint. Head is off white, creamy. Beer is clear light golden color. Aroma is lightly sweet, mineraly, touch of hay. Flaor is light but good, grainy, mineraly, with a touch of melon. Slight bit of spiciness. Bittersweet finish. Light body.

Overall very refreshing and held up well (this was sitting in the back of the beer fridge for several months before being sampled). (531 characters)

Gold/ honey color. Initial soft barley aroma on the pour that diminishes with subsequent smelling. Thin white creamy head that also diminishes fairly soon. Clean and mildly rich barley flavor with a minty hop finish. The mouth feel is medium bodied - soft. I like this beer and would buy it again, but I do not think it stands even with the Czech all-stars; however it is a cousin to them. Better than a lot of the Czech beer I explored just to find the cheapest beer deal in the Czech Republic. (495 characters)

Great Czech beer in an amber bottle. Classic grainy bitter sweet profile. Bright (like the label says) lager. Nice head with plenty of lace. Very good carbonation. good bittersweet finish too. And a good session beer if this is your style. Clear yellow gold color. Extra clean character. (287 characters)

Pours a very light yellow honey color with a nice white head.

Nose is a light floral grapefruit with hints of light pine and light white bread/yeast.

Very pleasant light hop/yeast flavors with actually a nice balance; crisp, clean although somewhat short in the finish. Relatively simple character and flavor.

A bit light/thin/weak for my taste but very fresh and clean tasting. (381 characters)

Medium gold color thats got a slight haze to it and lots of bubbly action within that retains its firmly set cappinf of stark white foam everpresent. Lacing coats with some thickly set spots and shortened strings.

Aroma is a bit musty/mushy/musky of dull wheaty breadish doughy malt with just a ever so slight pull of Saaz hop grassyness.

More malt then hops this is adequately nice to the taste buds with a clean yet mushy mash of breadish doughy maltyness thats not light nor heavy and lifts off into the finish with just a slight nudge to some grassy hops and dryish croissant dough.

Body is just under medium but keeps a well distributed malty base of doughyness thats clean and puffy with tender breadyness within. Simple, clean inviting finish thats just crisp enough to keep it within reach of a new sip.

A quiet Czech Pils that has more malt then most, but I liked it either way and is a solid sessionable brew that stands on its own over most, if not all, macro type lagers or Pils. (995 characters)

When pouring this Czech beer, the foam was white with a hint of beigh, bubbly and stuck to the glass. Taste and smell - Had a typical pilsner, hoppy feel. The color was Light pils/ honey. Mouthfeel was light-bodied rich and smooth. Good drinkibility. (250 characters)

a - golden yellow color with a nice white head, doesn't stick around very long which is the only thing I can take off for here.

s - malty and biscuity with some clean hops

t - crisp malty flavor with a very slight hop presence. The taste profiles are very subtle so my amateur palate is having trouble :( The finish is clean and not dry.

m - light and smooth

d - This beer has crazy drinability. This is the first beer that I have had that is light in flavor yet doesn't come with adjuncts. Just pure refreshment. I'm just taking off for the fact that it's fairly expensive at my local store. (598 characters)

darker than gold with a white head that didn't hold that well, but left some nice lace on the glass. nose wasn't as strong as i would have hoped for, but still had a nice malty hoppy thing going on. taste was a lot better than what the nose suggested. nice malt character with a hoppy finish. fuller body than expected as well. not too dry. soft and somewhat silky. really refreshing, and a pleasure to drink. (409 characters)

Found this in a VT general store. not too shabby.

A: Decent tight head. Not the prettiest color. It's a little dark. Just enough to make it look off.

S: Muted czech hops. A little sharpness in there.

T: I can see how people wouldn't be fond of this, but i found it intriguing. Not a light pils. Caramel down the tongue, ends with butterscotch.

M: Not bad. Once again, full for a pils.

D: Surprisingly so. Dunno if they threw some vienna in there but i could go for a few more of these. (491 characters)

The beer decamps the 500ml bottle a clear golden amber with a two-fingered creamy white head, the head settles slowly, leaving a thick sheet to cover the glass. Nose has a dominate malt sweetness, citrus crisp, start has a pleasant malt profile, slight hop bite at the back, top moderate in feel. Finish has modest acidity, the hop delectably spicy, quite dry and a smooth drinking beer, cannot say “Pilsners” are my favorites, but a good ones like this is always a pleasure to sample. (487 characters)

A 500 mL bottle of Zatec. The bottle claims "Since 1004". That's a a thousands plus years of experience and sets the bar pretty high for this beer. A clear golden brew with a modest head which quickly receded into nothingness. Decent aroma of grain, grass, and hops: standard pilsner. It opens up nicely as the beer warms. Crisp malt flavor complemented by grassy bitterness from the hops. The beer finishes quick, bitter and dry. This is a drinkable decent brew, but it doesn't live up to the expectations set by knowing the brewery has been in the business for more then a millennium. (586 characters)

I grabbed a bottle of this yesterday in anticipation of finding fresh Noble Pils.

Crystal clear golden yellow with a dense, white head that slowly falls off to a disk, leaving no lace. The nose is classic pilsner all the way. A beautiful pilsner malt character, soft, bready and mildly dough-like, along with a light grassy, lemony and mildly dusty too. Pretty much what I'd expect this beer to be.

The palate opens with the complex flavor of pilsner malt - bread, a little dough, a little honey, all very raw and cereal-like. Hops are on the lower end of the spectrum, with a mild lemon and earthy character, rather delicate. Bitterness is medium-light, present mostly in the finish. While light in body, this has a fullness that I've come to expect from the better pilsners out there. However, this finish isn't all together, despite the modest bitterness, this beer does devolve into being a little watery. Carbonation is high, providing a nice, drying, scrubbing finish. While not the best beer of the style, this is still one that I could easily drink half a case of if presented with the opportunity. (1,109 characters)

Pours to a patchy but lasting head that laces generously. Dark golden color. Aroma is fresh sweet malts and honeylike floral and spicy hops: 100% Zatec (Saaz) according to label. Flavor comes in with a blend of sweet, clean malt and a spicy, tangy and crisp bitterness. Mouthfeel is light yet substantial. Overall, a very good Bohemian Pilsner. (345 characters)

Poured into a stange glass.

A-Golden yellow, bubbly head that dissipated into a thin, white surface. Decent lacing on the glass. Looked like a pilsner lager!

S-Grains, wheat, malt, and a little caramel. There was not a lot going on in the smell.

T-Unlike the smell, the taste had more to it. I could taste sweet caramel malt, czech hops, a crisp finish with an aftertaste of cloves, spice, and salt and pepper. Very refreshing.

M-Light feeling with carbonation on the moderate/high side. Not sticky, just right for this style.

Overall-Great sessionable beer for anytime. Great with any type of food. The Czech's know what they are doing. (643 characters)

A: The beer is clear golden yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that has good retention properties.
S: There are aromas of bready malts in the nose along with notes of floral hops.
T: Like the smell, the taste is dominated by flavors of bready malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
D: The beer is very easy to drink and is also quite refreshing. (470 characters)

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine July 2007.

It looks like flavorful Pilsners are in style again and gun- ning for a comeback in the US--like Zatec Bright Lager, which just landed on our shores.

It's bright--crystal clear, in fact. A shade darker than we expected, but certainly within the golden realm. Big grassy, earthy aroma of spicy hops, and a long, clean grainy nose that shows a bready side. The hard pour- ing knocked out a good bit of its crispness, but the top-notch smoothness makes up for it. Moderate body. Thick on fresh grain, almost brash but the dry malt flavor and the clean husk in the finish show deep, complex features. The hop bitterness is slow to build, but it's very flavorful, with undertones of spice, rose water and lemon. Finishes semidry with an ever-pres- ent graininess.

Without a doubt, this is a good beer. For the US consumer, it's a slam dunk if you're looking for a refreshing, clean and tasty Pilsner. A hearty bowl of beef stew would make for a delicious pairing. (1,006 characters)

A: Poured an extraordinary clear bright orange with a slight, foamy white head that was speckled with macro-bubbles that soon collapsed to a sudsy layering. Visible carbonation was extremely soft, almost non-detect.

D: very faint and light by nature with some light caramel, oranges and a touch of spicy hops.

T: sweet oranges, dry caramel and honeyflowers. There was some popcorn hints, dried butter and light bread dough as well a touch of fruitiness (apples) that sneak in. Overall a rather nice flavor that finishes with a some malt sweetness and semi-dry oranges.

M: had a medium viscosity, was buttery with a flat carbonation with some oranges on the fade and swallow.

D: Decent drinkability, a nice flavor overall that was sweet, citrusy making for a moderately good drink. (788 characters)

Nice clear pale gold with cool cascading action on the head, which is thick and creamy and consists of very tiny bubbles.

Clean grassy smell with a bit of a wheaty element to it. Not much hop smell to speak of.

Crisp clean malt profile with a lightly bitter hop finish. Good balance but could benefit from a bit more hops.

Clean and smooth mouthfeel, a little over light body.

This is a very drinkable pilsner that really hit the spot on a warm day.

Tasted on 5/14/08. (473 characters)
