What a treat: An Austrian and Roggenbier tick combined in one.

A: The pour is a slightly cloudy golden orange color with a finger of white head.

S: An intensely bready aroma to this beer. Lots of wheat, rye, and just bread overall. Maybe a bit of corn in there, but I also get some mild citrus along with banana.

T: There's a slightly metallic taste that becomes more obvious as the beer warms up. Some banana esters, but again, lots of bread forward malt flavor. The rye is less pronounced, but there, and there's a bit of sweetness to it that has sort of a peach flavor.

M: The body is medium and the carbonation is a bit low for me. Maybe on the light end of medium.

D: Not a terrible beer, but certainly not my favorite either. It was nice to try a non-US version of a Roggenbier, but that's about it.

A style you dont find very often,Iam glad I picked this up today.Poured into a .5 liter stein a lighter golden with a nice fluffy one finger white crown atop.Aromas have a mix of light honey sweetness,iron,and lemon peel mainly.Refreshing on the palate with leafy hop and light honey sweetness dominating,the rye imparts a light quenching tartness in the finish.A hot weather refresher,I could drink this all day out on the porch and not get tired of it.

Served in a GameWorks shaker pint glass.

I never thought I'd have another roggenbier, but I always hoped I would. This one pours a clear golden straw topped by about two fingers of white foam. The nose comprises wheat, corn, black pepper, and rye bread. The taste is more of the same, with more pepper and the addition of some delightful rye spice. The body is a heavy light, with a light carbonation and a somewhat grainy feel. Overall, a nice roggen, something that can easily be (Americanly) sessioned any day.

Third Roggenbier i've tried to date, the Wolnzacher was extremely muky and turbid, but decent, and Destihl's version was ok.

Pours a hazy gold with suspended yeast plankton micro-sediment. For a minute I thought it had been filtered as it was a bright gold color, until I put it up to the light and it looked like pond water. Arcs of drippy lace, and pretty good lasting coverage happening with the foam.

Smells a bit swilly like wet grains, mild sweetness, and some light tea leaf aromas.

Smooth feel, slightly oxidized, grainy and lightly spicy. Graphite, crushed wheat kernels, green tea. Lingering dry grain that seems to be be pure rye in the aftertaste. Feel is light and easy drinking, though it does show its age a little. Something to try if you haven't had the style, but it's not representative of the extremes a Roggenbier can be, based on my limited experience detailed above.

Always happy to to find a beer in this style, picked this up at Peabody's in Boone, NC

Pours honey colored with a finger of pearl colored head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Bready & peppery notes

T: Bready, sweat toffee notes mix with pepper & grassy notes. Hints of oxidation mix with pepper & grassyness, some flowery notes mingle with toffee too as this warms. Finishes with peppery & leafy hop notes in the finish, some cloying notes as well...

MF: Light medium bodied, firm carbonation, so-so balance, some crispness shows up late

This is is a tad too sweet for the style, some nice peepry notes, perhaps too old? Don't know what the date code 41901120 means...

500 mL bottle, called Roggen Gold on the label, but with a little research it appears they are the same beer,

A: Pours a lightly turbid pale yellow. There is a frothy white head, good head retention with some nice rings of lace. Akin to a kellerbier in look for me.

S: Classic German nose, pilsner-esque - grassy noble hops and sourdough bread.

T: Not pilsner like on the tongue though. Big amounts of malt and some spice on the back end. Wheaty, grainy flavour.

M: Good crisp carbonation, though starts kind of flabby. Nice aftertaste, overall moderate medium body.

D: A nice beer, a rare style, I'd say this more of a Roggen-Helles hybrid. Would make a nice session beer for me.

Picked up a bottle for $3.50 labeled Roggen Gold, though I'm confident this is the same beer. It's simple, but drinkable with plain bready Euro lager malts to open and then a spicy rye and peppery noble hops finish. Really, this beer could use more character. It's not offensive, but it's quite simple and unsurprising.

A 500 mL bottle called Roggen Gold. Same abv and style, so I'm reviewing it here rather than as a new listing.

A: The roggenbier is a yellow color that like an entire bottle of food coloring emptied into a glass. So clear, I'd swear it is a kristalweizen. My first pour into the weizen glass yielded over 8 fingers of white head. Islands of lace are spattered all over the glass as a result.

S: The roggenbier has a distinct wheat aroma initially that slowly transitions to a mild rye. The breadiness isn't very strong, nor is the tartness that tart.

T: The wheat tartness really comes through in the absolute finish of the ale, pleasant and light but sufficiently tart. Spicy rye, minus caraway, is full but not overwhelmingly bready. As it continues to warm, the roggenbier embraces its malty side, a richness that could be confused for a maibock (I know, we're crossing streams here). The flavor is good but it doesn't accentuate the wheat and the rye like some roggens do (yes, I'm looking at you Scratch 28).

M: The mouthfeel is fruity sweet, malty until the wheat kicks up the tartness in the finish.

D: Most anything below 5%, barring few exceptions, is drinkable and then some. This is no exception, spicy at times and strong on the wheat in the finish.

A- This beer has a slightly hazy caramel colored body with a racing carbonation of big bubbles and a porous cobweb head of white that breaks up pretty quickly.

S- The clean aroma ans a nice flinty quality with some raw grain and slightly toasted malt hint. There is a touch of sweetness in the finish.

T- The touch of sulfur and honey fades into a slight tartness which becomes more of a grainy spiciness as it opens. There is a touch of hop bitterness and juniper berry in the finish that grows as the beer warms as does the hops.

M- The light mouthfeel has an airy texture with a flat feeling on the tongue in the finish.

O- This beer is thin and crisp with a very soft flavor but some nice lagered qualities in the finish.

Roggenbier! 500 ml bottle, on to the beer:

This is a paleish orange/yellow color of a beer. The head on top is 1½ fingers thick, frothy texture, solid head retention, and a little lace. Hmmm, the aroma is a little weak at first, but there's something. Hop oils/extract, some lemon.

This is different, though it sure shares some characteristics with those bright colored beers of Munich. The spiced rye is present and moderate in intensity. It's only a little sweet. Notes of apple and lemon appears, some bitter hop extract sits around on the palate and into the aftertaste. Comes out dry. There's meat on this beer's bones, a little slick, carbonation doesn't mess with the palate.

My first roggenbier = interesting and liking it. This beer begs for a pastrami on rye.

500ml bottle bought online from Beer Ship.

It pours a hazy orange..err...closer to a honey colour. Good 1" head of foam that leaves some impressive lacing.

It has quite the spicy smell. And malty. And sweet. And earthy. A few things going on here and I like.

Oh yeah, that's what Roggenbier is all about....a distinct rye flavour.(I had to check Beer Styles as this is my first of the style) Some sweetness in the flavour, kind of honey like, that pretty much gets overwhelmed with the spicy rye notes making the malt presence more of an earthy type.

More sips in and I'm settling in to a tasty treat. Roggenbiers now have me, intrigued.

Thanks to Volker at Gourmet Haus Staudt for this one.

500ml bottle poured into a pilsner glass, the beer appears a brilliant clear gold, topped by a rocky, frothy white head that rises over the top of the glass before slowly settling to an inch-thick cap. Fed by a steady stream of carbonation, the head retains for the entirety of my glass.

The aroma is bright and clean, faintly yeasty and grassy, only hinting at malted rye. As it warms, I get a whiff of white pepper, honey and sweet pilsner malt.

Bolder and spicier on the tongue, I get plenty of up-front rye bread, spice, pepper and earthy, leafy hops. Mid-palate has a strong mineral/hard water character at first, but this goes away in time, replaced by stronger flavors of spicy rye and bitter earthy hops. Carbonation is at an upper-moderate level, balancing the heaviness of the rye. The finish is dry, spicy and bitter, the flavor clean and the body crisp, even as the beer reaches room temperature.

This is a surprisingly rich and flavorful beer for a modest 4.9% alcohol, though the sharp flavor does stunt the drinkability somewhat; one bottle was plenty for me, and drinking a second would be a chore, though I did thoroughly enjoy it.

Poured from 500mL bottle into a pint glass. This is my first true Roggenbier.

Appearance: light yellow-gold color with a touch of haze and about two fingers of soft white head. Not too bad.

Smell: slightly malty, slightly grainy aroma with a touch of citrus and a touch of slightly fruity spiciness which I think is the rye; the nearest things I can think of are nutmeg and cinnamon (note that these are very light notes indeed). While I wouldn't normally consider this terribly good at a base level, the spiciness is interesting to me.

Taste: malt is surprisingly sweet and some of that spicy rye character has subsided; there are some light but nice noble hops in the mix. It's rather like a very full-bodied Pilsner, almost. Interesting, but I find myself quite enjoying this.

Mouthfeel: there is lots of body in this one; it's got a thick and roamy mouthfeel. Thrown into that is a good deal of carbonation (or, at least it feels like it), yielding quite a nice creaminess. Dig it!

Drinkability: well, I like the taste and feel, but it's got a hearty fillingness to it. I think that detracts a bit from sessionability ... the ABV is doable, but with this body it's a once-an-evening kind of brew.

Finally got my hands on a Roggenbier. Picked up a single of this at whole foods in Devon.

Out of the bottle into the glass Schlägl Bio-Roggen pours are very deep golden hue of a color with rising bubbles leaving a thin film on top of white stuff, poka dot stick. Some sediment in the glass.

Whiffs reveal a big malt base with Rye malt being the main component. A nice amount of pale malt as well with some real earthy grassy hops bursting up the nose. Smells clean enough and in the German vein.

This is one crisp beer. Earthy hops clash up against some rye malt leaving for a nice mix. The hops are not citrusy in any way and remind me of the countryside. Rye presents a nice spice mid palate. The pale malts make up the tail end of the beer.

Feel is pretty crisp up front going into a nice smoothness. No intrusion from any alc. as it's only 4.9%. The rye spice hit mid palate is not as large as say a American made rye type beer, this is a bit more refined and traditional. It's carbed up to an extent but nothing bitey.

Drinking this, im thinking a nicely made Helles Lager with Rye Malt and German influence. Kind of a mix of the two countries, Germany and Austria. It's easy enough to go down and good for another, refreshing.

Pours a crystal clear gold color with huge poof of soapy white head, good retention, moderate lacing. Scent is grassy, straw-like, earthy and bready with a touch of mustyness. Taste brings the grass, straw with some more pronounced touched of rye and wheat. Finnish is musty rather than spicy. Light bodied, overall light carbonation after the pour. An ok introduction to the style, but this style is all over the map in flavor profile as is.

Roggen Gold pours with a goregous, golden hue. Clear body, good carbonation. Nice head of meringue bubbles forms on top, crackling and quickly receding to a ring of foam. Sweet clover honey dominates the aroma, with a backdrop of sulfury German yeast and Rye bread. Lovely nose, with only the slightest hint of hops.

Dry, spicy rye galore for the flavor. Caramel sweetness from the grain bill, while the hops are almost non-existent. Feels clean and crisp on the tongue with a slight fruit presence. Decently carbonated, but Roggen Gold fells a bit grainy and thin on the finish. Drinkable, yes, but a bit one-dimensional in the end. Still, it's an enjoyable Roggen that I'm glad I got the chance to try. Worth repeating.

Finally got to try a Roggenbier, compliments of a trade with TMoney2591 (a good trader). Poured into a beer mug as a hazy dull gold color with orange highlights. Medium sized delicate white head with good retention. Impressive amount of lacing.

Mild aroma of banana esters and a yeasty component, pleasant but not that strong.

Taste is fairly average. Bready rye taste, some maltiness and grassy hops in the finish.

Mouthfeel is about average for a light ale. Somewhat crisp. Not sweet. No unpleasant aftertaste.

On the whole a fairly average beer, interesting but not that memorable.

500 ml bottle labeled as "Roggen Gold".

It pours into my mug a deep clear gold with a big foamy white head. As it slowly recedes, it leaves some nice lacing. I have no idea what the status quo is on the appearance of this style but this looks very good.

The smell is your typical Helles lager. The rye gives a breadier, spicier tinge. The hops are very medicinal and grassy but pleasant.

The taste has a good balance of malt and hops. The hops are mild and slightly bitter. It is dryer than most lagers of this style. It is immensely drinkable.

This was inexpensive and surprisingly good.

I've only ever seen this beer in the Julius Meinl luxury grocery store in downtown Vienna, where it costs twice as much as local beers cost in other stores. Standard brown half liter bottle with a green and gold label featuring a small coat of arms under the name. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 3/28/08, I opened it on 3/5/08.
Pours a clear pale amber under a one finger off-white head with nice retention and some very good lace lines. Nice strong nose of rye and wheat, with a hint of citrus. The mouth is quite heavy and very well carbonated - almost painfully prickly despite the weight. Very nice, very malty taste, with the rye quite prominent. Some mildly bitter hops lurk in the background, showing themselves plainly only right at the swallow then several seconds later at the back of the mouth. There's a slightly syrupy sweetness here, too, adding a nice touch to a very enjoyable brew.

A: Pours a slightly hazy bronze color with a small head that fades to bits of lacing.

S: Aroma of grain, with some malt sweetness and bit of spice in the background.

T: Taste of grain with a mild malt sweetness and bit of spice and biscuit in the background. Mild bitterness and a dry finish.

F: Fairly light body, crisp and smooth.

O: Quite drinkable and goes down easy. A fairly muted beer but still very enjoyable.

Like their helles doppelbock, Schlagl's roggenbier seems to be on the light and fairly average side of things. The simple malt, rye, and hop flavors that are present are not particularly bold, and very little development occurs over the course of drinking this beer: new flavors are not discovered, and those that are around do not inspire. Perhaps Schlagl's recipe for a helles roggenbier is an attempt at a quick-drinking summer beer; this is difficult to tell. It's also possible that my bottle was a few months too old, but as there is no date, this is impossible to tell. With these possibilities, and a generally mediocre beer, I do not think I'll revisit this beer or brewery again.

Pours a 1.5cm head of fairly clean, white foam with average longevity, lasting a few minutes as it descends to a thin film atop the body. The head leaves small spots and streaks of lacing along the sides of the glass, but nothing particularly noteworthy or substantial. Body is a semi-transparent, bright golden color, with light bringing out yellow highlights. Carbonation is visible through the haze, streaming from the center of the glass.

Dominant aromas are of steeped grains, light caramel, faint noble hops, and a bit of peppery scent that I assume comes from the inclusion of rye.

The total palette I detect for flavor is similar to a fairly average pale German ale with increased depth of flavor due to the addition of rye. Opens with pale malt sweetness and a bit of peppery rye. Mid-palate picks up continued malt backbone (sweetness, a bit biscuity), very modest noble hop bitterness, and touches of lingering rye. Closes out with obvious sweetness, a quick flash of herbal bitterness, and again, lingering peppery rye. Aftertaste is virtually nothing: it's surprising how the flavors just stop at the end of a sip.

Body is medium-light, with medium-light levels of carbonation, leading to a slightly bubbly, but primarily smooth effect across the palate. Overall mouthfeel is not particularly exciting, but workable. Closes out with a semi-dry finish.

A: Pours a slightly hazy gold with a compact, lingering white head. Not a bad looking beer, but not the most impressive either.

S: A peppery rye aroma is readily discernible on the nose, though aromas of biscuits, caramel, and grassy, herbal hops peak through as the beer settles a bit.

T: Opens crisp and dry with notes of biscuits, crackers, honey, rye, lemon, caramel, minerals, and grassy hops. The finish is short and clean with grassy hop and peppery rye flavors dominating.

M: Light-to-medium bodied, clean, and dry. Carbonation is very forceful, almost distracting. It's drinkable, but feels a bit bloating.

O: This is my first roggenbier, and I'm not sure what to think. I guess I was expecting a bit more grain and spice, and a little less sweetness. In any event, Bio-Roggen is a decent beer, but is one I likely will not revisit anytime soon.

This beer pours a clear golden with thick foam head and really nice lacing, but it looks rather pale and clear which I didn't assume typical. The smell is rather corn syrupy and a bit sour (I assume from the rye), but what saves it is there is a sweetness on the back of the nose that is rather nice. Holy cow, this tastes so much better than it smells. The flavors are slight sour and fairly sweet. It's really nice on the palate, really really smooth. It drinks really good. It's a pretty good beer when you get right down to it.

appearance; clear brown-tinted gold. A hazy beer from the sediment, white head, good retention, decent rings of lace.

smell; spicy rye grains and yeast, a little sour with a hint of lemon zest. Some hints of vanilla with suppressed sweetness from dry husky flavors. A bit musky.

taste; spicy and zesty, much taste of rye. Very husky with hints of burnt sugar. Smooth warm yeast holds it together, becoming sour and extra spicy to acrid in the finish.

mouthfeel; medium bodied with a powdery chewyness. Slick and sticky in the finish.

overall; a very unique and tasty treat, some untapped potential here but a solid drink, would buy again.
