I got this 500mL brown bottle from Wegmans in Cicero NY for $3.69. Code 1814343 on the label. Served cold in a chilled weizen glass.

I poured this a bit heavy and backed off just in time to keep it from going over the rim. But the beer certainly did help out in that effort, because the head rose to a good 1/2" over the top of the glass and held together without spilling over (I actually measured it). Brew is a cloudy honey color with abundant carbo floating upward. Nose is stale cinnamon (AKA "styrene", the fake plasticy kind of spice that seriously turns me off. Did you ever bite into a styrofoam cup or plate etc? That's what I'm talking about), a bit of astringent banana peel, skunk, yeast. For the most part, taste follows directly from it. Feel is average for the style.

Top 50 German beers tick #23, wahoo. Bottle from Gourmet Haus Staudt, no freshness date.

The body is a dirty dark amber, not exactly the most appetizing appearance, but you have to be a little forgiving with weizens. It pours with an inch and a half of white suds, which settles to a thin cap in time.

It smells pleasantly citrusy, lemon and lime-like. There's a light malty sweetness, wheat and tropical fruit (pineapple) along with a dash of spice. Pretty distinctive for the style, actually.

Taste is quite good, very fruity - lemon, pineapple, banana. Clove and pepper are noticeable up front, but fade away mid-palate. Malty, but not particularly sweet at any point, this is refreshing stuff. The finish is mellow and brief, banana and pear-like esters lingering on the tongue.

Very good, certainly a standout hefeweizen. Glad I finally got around to trying this.

Pours a cloudy straw color, with a decent head.
Smells are lacking in the clove that I usually get in bavarian hefe's and the banana, but it has a more mild smell.
The taste is quite Bavarian however, but it is more citrusy than I expected.

A good example of a German wheat.

A: Shade of orange, slightly turbeo with large bubble lather, with constant, heavy carbonation. The head has very high retention and residual.

S: In his aroma citrus notes are perceived, which are more penetrating than in the taste

T: With a slight hint of sweetness at first, passes through an acidity and bitterness with a good long finish slightly bitter citrus.

A: Huge head so big the pour takes longer than Guiness. As it fades it leaves a nice lacing and notches for each sip. Its a hazywheat golden orange color.

N: nice bavarian here with nice wheat, obvious German Bavarian malts, citrus and orange peel, lemon grass, effervescence.

T: Starts like a hefe, wheat citrus lemongrass, Bavarian malts, banana, light pale grassy hops even. Slightly chewy, little Bavarian yeast with fruit and crispness.

M: Med to lighter body with good carbonation.

F: crisp finish, lingering wheat, little sweetness and sticky, little too sweet overall, some citrus, fruits and banana. Lingering Bavarian malts and fruity crisp yeast remnants. Drinkable and tasty for a summer here, but a little too sweet and sticky.

very solid, if pretty conservative, wheat beer. not going to change your life, but probably a good representative of wheat beers in general.

I wish it had a little stronger wheat flavor. Unlike a lot of new wheat beers it didn't strike me as too fruity or overly spiced.

Kulmbacher Kapuziner weissbier. 0.5 swingcap bottle.

Great look of golden hazy beer with big head. Not too much carbonation.

Smell and taste are biscuits, malt , yeast. Low on banana and citrus notes. Low on spices as well. Not much hops either, allthough the bottle states it contains both hops and hop extracts.

Watery mouthfeel, plus disappointing of refreshment.
This beer needs more carbonation, as well as flavours.
Not a very impressive weissbier.

A - Hazy butterscotch color with an average sized, light and foamy white head. Disappears fairly fast leaving no lace but plenty of bubbles.

S - Very grainy and wheat like with less banana/gum/clove aroma. There is an overly ripe banana smell and hints of clove and bubblegum. Hints of lemon type of citrus. Fairly strong bready aroma as well. Much more grain driven smell than some other Hefeweizens that I've had.

T - Faint taste of overly ripe banana and some bubblegum start off the taste. Some sweet grainy/bready malt flavor with a bit of a wet wheat flavor comes in soon afterward. This makes up the primary flavor for the beer. Some clove and spiced flavors come in mid to late sip with a slight taste of medicinal and alcohol taste. Banana shows up a bit again at the end.

M - Medium body and very carbonated. Very smooth and has a creamy feel to it.

D - Very easy to drink beer both in body and in flavor. Makes for a nice summertime treat that goes down easy and is quite refreshing.

Notes: Best before 29/09/10. This had a bit less of the typical Hefeweizen taste of banana, bubblegum, and clove. They were still present and contributed, but they were greatly masked by the grainy/bready taste. Not a bad beer, in fact it was enjoyable to drink, I just think it fell a bit flat for the style. Definitely worth a try, and I would have another, but I think there are better examples of the style.

1PT .9FL swing-top bottle served in my Weihenstephaner weizen glass. Poured with a dense, creamy white cap that occupied 90% of the glass before it eventually dissipated into a solid skim - no appreciable lacing on this one. As the head gradually recedes, it reveals a tranlucent, orange liquid. Nose expresses a hint of cloves and banana esters, but not as bold as some more prominent examples of the style. Taste follows nose - definitely a nice German Hefe, but somewhat muted, as suggested by the nose. A little bit of lemon also comes out in the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is light-bodied with an even and pleasant carbonation and a little bit of acidity. Definitely an easy drinking and refreshing Hefe. I wouldn't pass this up as a draft option, but does not stand up to the likes of some of the better ones in my opinion.

A - Didn't have the head retention I would expect from a hefe. Hazy gold color with orange highlights. Low carbonation could be the reason head retention was not great. (This was a growler fill, so very dependent on place I got it from)

S - What, spice, clove, esters.

T - The wheat really stands out, but there are also flavors of clove, ripe banana, light citrus, with a slight bubble gum.

M - Light and refreshing, could use some more carbonation but it wasn't there. Again, from a growler so dependent upon distributor.

D - Like the mouthfreel, it is light and refreshing. This is perfect for a summer day or after working outside when you not only want a beer but want something refreshing.

500ml swing-top bottle into a Dogfish Head off-centered pint glass.

A murky, dull peach body with a yeasty haze fills the glass. Spittle-colored foam covers Kapuziner with a thin film that retains well but leaves no lace. Soft notes of clove and white pepper in the aroma with yeasty esters that suggest banana and dried pineapple. Faint floral hops and toasted wheat malt adds a solid background.

A bit more spice in the flavor (orange peel and clove), and the crisp carbonation level dries out the finish. Light sulfur minerals in the middle with semi-stale wheat malt and vanilla flavors. Light body is crisp and packs a tight carbonation level, but feels a bit thin on the front of the tongue. Overall, Kapuziner is a decent Bavarian Hefe, but I'd take Live Oak's Hefeweizen over this any day of the week.

500ml flip top bottle.

Pours a hazy dark golden color with a huge white head. The aroma is strong cloves and bananas. The flavor is more of the same with some pithy orange in there as well. The flavors are balanced with neither the banana or cloves standing out. You also get quite a bit of wheat as well as some caramel. The mouthfeel is medium, soft and creamy and the carbonation is low.

This was labeled as Kapuziner Bavarian Hefeweizen but everything I have found (including the Kapuziner website) says this is the same beer as the Kapuziner Weissbier.

Got this bottle with a flip top cap.

Darker than most hefeweizens, and has a beautiful rich and creamy off white head. The color is of caramel, and is quite murky.

This is spicy in the nose, with cloves, slight banana, and a bit of a metallic hint.

The taste is of banana and bubble gum. Mouth feel wise it's slick and creamy. All the way around a great solid hefeweizen.

On-tap at Lord Hobo into a weizen glass.

A: Hazed gold body topped by an inch of frothy white foam that shows decent retention and leaves moderate lace (at best). Pretty standard for the style.

S: Rich, smooth aroma of wheat and yeast, with banana taking the preeminent spot over sweet bubblegum and light clove. Again, not bad, but nothing much beyond the ordinary.

T: Bright, fresh flavors of bubblegum and banan, with spicy, yeasty wheat in the background. Clean and refreshing, but nothing terribly memorable.

M: Light-to-medium body with tons of fizzy carbonation. Lively.

D: Easy drinking, but not memorable enough flavor-wise to keep me enraptured.

Notes: Solid, but not as good as Ayinger or Franziskaner, and nowhere near Weihenstephan. Not even close.

This opened with a decisive POP, and a light spraying mist of beer--a good sign, since swing-tops often go flat. Poured into a traditional weizen glass, this beer presents a dark gold color with a dense, thick head, over an inch tall. Nearly perfect looking. The nose has a lot of wheat malt in, though fruitiness and phenols are light and not prominent. The flavor is disappointing... where are the essential weizen characteristics? you have to really hunt for them. There is a pleasant maltiness, with nice melanoidens, but it's only lightly fruity, and hardly a bit of clove to be found..

part of a hef taste night in dallas. abv is the same as the their hef... it may be that the beer may have a different label???

pour is golden orange with a healthy head. when the wheat malt pour it looks dingy brown. nose of clove and citrus... mild banana. palate is a bit earthier than most. some banana, nice clove making it quite dry and a minty finish. a bit of sweet cotton candy and earth linger. the earthy quality may be my hopes for a helles side of the hef... can't really say until i try the strictly hef no thank you bavarian. great beer. not too sweet.

A- There is a hazy orange body with a strong carbonation of big bubbles that supports a pancake bubble head that last for a good bit.
S- There is a nice crisp pine note that has a pleasant light fresh honey note to the finish.
T- This beer has a dry club soda note with some bread dough and a faint alcohol hint. This beer has a soft flat apple juice finish with a soft bubble gum note that grows a bit as it warms.
M- This beer has a full mouthfeel with a watery texture.
D- This beer has a light crisp soft wheat bread flavor with a slight watery note. The flavor are pretty subtle but the apple flavors are a bit off.

A: Poured on tap at Novare Res Bier Cafe. Large, white frothy head that slowly dissipated to 1-finger. Body is an almost rusty-orange color, and cloudy.

S: Very nice aroma of wheat, yeast, and citrus fruit. Nothing in the aroma is overpowering, yet still present enough to be present with every sip.

T: This is a great-tasting hefeweizen... smooth and refreshing with yeast and wheat, and lots of orange. Some spices are present (especially pepper). Excellent!

M: Medium-bodied and creamy, with average carbonation.

D: I think maybe the best hefeweizen I've ever had. I could drink it all night.

A: Very cloudy nectar-yellow color, has a lighter shade at the bottom of the mug and darker as it approaches the head; the foamy head looks like snow, abundant and long lasting, but not lacing;

S: First vanilla and bubble gum, after smelling carefully i detected some wheat and banana;

T: Banana and floral hops, the finish have wheat, adding a spicy touch;

M: Refreshing, medium body and creamy;

D: Very good wheat beer, but not outstanding like Erdinger.

On tap at Max and Moritz in Berlin, Germany. If you're in Berlin, make the trip to one of the best hidden restaurants on Orianenstraße in Kreutzberg. The food is perfect, great service, and a fantastic beer list.

Hazy straw with golden notes. Thick two-inch head typical of service in Germany. Always fun to look at.

Strong banana and wheat. The banana is sweet, and there's a great deal of yeast in the smell - naturally.

Rich yeasty and wheat flavors. Slightly overripe banana, but not too much.

As most hefeweizen are, refreshing and slightly sweet. A more Barvarian example - my Berliner friends didn't let me forget that! - but still tasty nonetheless.

Great for, as many Germans do, an afternoon refresher. Typical example of the style.

Kapuziner Weissbier poured from a 16 oz bottle into a large weizen glass. Appears a murky straw yellow with a nice pillowy froth to it.

Light aroma of wheat and some soft grains.

All the typical flavors found within the style, hay like wheat and roasted grains adding a bit of sweetness. Bitter, almost sour, euro style hop adds some lemon rind notes. Minerally at times but that only adds to the uniqueness. A faint spiciness is found, bringing to mind clove and anisseed. Muted banana on the back end with the Munich style malt.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a lingering spicey finish.

Overall a quite drinkable beer that was good until the last drop. With a moderate price point, this beer could be a staple.

Bottle purchased at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo.

Pours a cloudy gold with a large cream coloured white head. A steady carbonation keeps the foam replenished for much of the drink, and as it descends it leaves a few streaks of lace along the sides of the glass. After about 15 minutes everything is more or less gone, but that aint bad retention for a home poured hefe. The final swirl deposits some lovely chunks of yeast, which gradually find a home at the bottom of the weizen glass.

The aroma is beautiful, and a bit heavier on malted wheat than I've come to expect. Beyond this you'll still find the standard banana and spicy clove notes, but its definitely the maltiness that makes this one stand out from the crowd and differentiate itself from its rivals.

So let's get the standard hefe stuff out of the way first. There's a wonderfully phenolic sweet banana presence, which is combined with a spicy clove flavour, and there's some light citric relief to cut through a slightly heavier than normal sweetness. Here's what distinguishes this beer though - there's a really heavy toasted, creamy wheat backbone that is far more prominent than usual in a beer which tends to emphasise the yeast. It really seeps through the flavour profile and makes it less refreshing in character and more filling. I also really like what it does for the mouthfeel, which is decadently smooth and silky. I'd even go so far as to say this is a touch chewy, as if I could actually feel the soft particles of yeast dissolve in my mouth. The deviation from the regular weisse body is so marked that I'm not sure whether to deduct points or praise them for the glorious innovation. I feel that the best way to serve justice is to reward the intense pleasure its given me by saying to hell with convention, this mouthfeel is top notch!

This isn't you run of the mill hefe. It has that little bit extra which makes it memorable, and a worthwhile experience. Those who think they've tasted everything in a hefeweizen and think that the template can't be broken should check Kapuziner out. I already want another one, and I'm kicking myself that I have to drive two hours to get it!

500 mL bottle poured into a weissbier glass.

Pours a cloudy, deep, burnt-orange-tinted amber, dark for a hefe, with a relatively nondescript fluffy white head.
Aromas of dried bananas and spice, subtle enough that I can't say for sure that it's clove, with a solid yeasty bread note underneath.
Spicier on the palate than the nose would indicate, though it comes across not as clove but as perhaps coriander and baking spice. Rich and almost warming in that regard, and perhaps would work well as an autumn hefe, but not what I've come to expect. A pretty solid wheat backbone again, with a moderate lingering bitterness (hops?) on the finish.

Not bad, but not what I look for in a hefe; seems to miss some of the telltale hefe qualities.

Pours a cloudy, golden orange color with a tan, thick, creamy head that sticks around awhile and leaves thick lacing around the glass. So far so good. Funny thing is when I first bought the beer and held the bottle up to the light it looked clear. Then I put it in the fridge over night and the next day it was very cloudy. I guess the yeast are more active when the beer is cold.

Smell is of orange, banana, and some clove typical for a weiss beer.

Taste upfront is some clove followed by some spice then the banana notes with some hints of orange finish is very smooth with an aftertaste of yeast. Very pleasant beer to drink. Sets on the palate nicely.

Quality beer with a great mouthfeel and exceptional taste. One of the best weiss beers I've had.
