On-tap at Lord Hobo into a weizen glass.

A: Hazed gold body topped by an inch of frothy white foam that shows decent retention and leaves moderate lace (at best). Pretty standard for the style.

S: Rich, smooth aroma of wheat and yeast, with banana taking the preeminent spot over sweet bubblegum and light clove. Again, not bad, but nothing much beyond the ordinary.

T: Bright, fresh flavors of bubblegum and banan, with spicy, yeasty wheat in the background. Clean and refreshing, but nothing terribly memorable.

M: Light-to-medium body with tons of fizzy carbonation. Lively.

D: Easy drinking, but not memorable enough flavor-wise to keep me enraptured.

Notes: Solid, but not as good as Ayinger or Franziskaner, and nowhere near Weihenstephan. Not even close.

This opened with a decisive POP, and a light spraying mist of beer--a good sign, since swing-tops often go flat. Poured into a traditional weizen glass, this beer presents a dark gold color with a dense, thick head, over an inch tall. Nearly perfect looking. The nose has a lot of wheat malt in, though fruitiness and phenols are light and not prominent. The flavor is disappointing... where are the essential weizen characteristics? you have to really hunt for them. There is a pleasant maltiness, with nice melanoidens, but it's only lightly fruity, and hardly a bit of clove to be found..

part of a hef taste night in dallas. abv is the same as the their hef... it may be that the beer may have a different label???

pour is golden orange with a healthy head. when the wheat malt pour it looks dingy brown. nose of clove and citrus... mild banana. palate is a bit earthier than most. some banana, nice clove making it quite dry and a minty finish. a bit of sweet cotton candy and earth linger. the earthy quality may be my hopes for a helles side of the hef... can't really say until i try the strictly hef no thank you bavarian. great beer. not too sweet.

A- There is a hazy orange body with a strong carbonation of big bubbles that supports a pancake bubble head that last for a good bit.
S- There is a nice crisp pine note that has a pleasant light fresh honey note to the finish.
T- This beer has a dry club soda note with some bread dough and a faint alcohol hint. This beer has a soft flat apple juice finish with a soft bubble gum note that grows a bit as it warms.
M- This beer has a full mouthfeel with a watery texture.
D- This beer has a light crisp soft wheat bread flavor with a slight watery note. The flavor are pretty subtle but the apple flavors are a bit off.

A: Poured on tap at Novare Res Bier Cafe. Large, white frothy head that slowly dissipated to 1-finger. Body is an almost rusty-orange color, and cloudy.

S: Very nice aroma of wheat, yeast, and citrus fruit. Nothing in the aroma is overpowering, yet still present enough to be present with every sip.

T: This is a great-tasting hefeweizen... smooth and refreshing with yeast and wheat, and lots of orange. Some spices are present (especially pepper). Excellent!

M: Medium-bodied and creamy, with average carbonation.

D: I think maybe the best hefeweizen I've ever had. I could drink it all night.

A: Very cloudy nectar-yellow color, has a lighter shade at the bottom of the mug and darker as it approaches the head; the foamy head looks like snow, abundant and long lasting, but not lacing;

S: First vanilla and bubble gum, after smelling carefully i detected some wheat and banana;

T: Banana and floral hops, the finish have wheat, adding a spicy touch;

M: Refreshing, medium body and creamy;

D: Very good wheat beer, but not outstanding like Erdinger.

On tap at Max and Moritz in Berlin, Germany. If you're in Berlin, make the trip to one of the best hidden restaurants on Orianenstraße in Kreutzberg. The food is perfect, great service, and a fantastic beer list.

Hazy straw with golden notes. Thick two-inch head typical of service in Germany. Always fun to look at.

Strong banana and wheat. The banana is sweet, and there's a great deal of yeast in the smell - naturally.

Rich yeasty and wheat flavors. Slightly overripe banana, but not too much.

As most hefeweizen are, refreshing and slightly sweet. A more Barvarian example - my Berliner friends didn't let me forget that! - but still tasty nonetheless.

Great for, as many Germans do, an afternoon refresher. Typical example of the style.

Kapuziner Weissbier poured from a 16 oz bottle into a large weizen glass. Appears a murky straw yellow with a nice pillowy froth to it.

Light aroma of wheat and some soft grains.

All the typical flavors found within the style, hay like wheat and roasted grains adding a bit of sweetness. Bitter, almost sour, euro style hop adds some lemon rind notes. Minerally at times but that only adds to the uniqueness. A faint spiciness is found, bringing to mind clove and anisseed. Muted banana on the back end with the Munich style malt.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a lingering spicey finish.

Overall a quite drinkable beer that was good until the last drop. With a moderate price point, this beer could be a staple.

Bottle purchased at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo.

Pours a cloudy gold with a large cream coloured white head. A steady carbonation keeps the foam replenished for much of the drink, and as it descends it leaves a few streaks of lace along the sides of the glass. After about 15 minutes everything is more or less gone, but that aint bad retention for a home poured hefe. The final swirl deposits some lovely chunks of yeast, which gradually find a home at the bottom of the weizen glass.

The aroma is beautiful, and a bit heavier on malted wheat than I've come to expect. Beyond this you'll still find the standard banana and spicy clove notes, but its definitely the maltiness that makes this one stand out from the crowd and differentiate itself from its rivals.

So let's get the standard hefe stuff out of the way first. There's a wonderfully phenolic sweet banana presence, which is combined with a spicy clove flavour, and there's some light citric relief to cut through a slightly heavier than normal sweetness. Here's what distinguishes this beer though - there's a really heavy toasted, creamy wheat backbone that is far more prominent than usual in a beer which tends to emphasise the yeast. It really seeps through the flavour profile and makes it less refreshing in character and more filling. I also really like what it does for the mouthfeel, which is decadently smooth and silky. I'd even go so far as to say this is a touch chewy, as if I could actually feel the soft particles of yeast dissolve in my mouth. The deviation from the regular weisse body is so marked that I'm not sure whether to deduct points or praise them for the glorious innovation. I feel that the best way to serve justice is to reward the intense pleasure its given me by saying to hell with convention, this mouthfeel is top notch!

This isn't you run of the mill hefe. It has that little bit extra which makes it memorable, and a worthwhile experience. Those who think they've tasted everything in a hefeweizen and think that the template can't be broken should check Kapuziner out. I already want another one, and I'm kicking myself that I have to drive two hours to get it!

500 mL bottle poured into a weissbier glass.

Pours a cloudy, deep, burnt-orange-tinted amber, dark for a hefe, with a relatively nondescript fluffy white head.
Aromas of dried bananas and spice, subtle enough that I can't say for sure that it's clove, with a solid yeasty bread note underneath.
Spicier on the palate than the nose would indicate, though it comes across not as clove but as perhaps coriander and baking spice. Rich and almost warming in that regard, and perhaps would work well as an autumn hefe, but not what I've come to expect. A pretty solid wheat backbone again, with a moderate lingering bitterness (hops?) on the finish.

Not bad, but not what I look for in a hefe; seems to miss some of the telltale hefe qualities.

Pours a cloudy, golden orange color with a tan, thick, creamy head that sticks around awhile and leaves thick lacing around the glass. So far so good. Funny thing is when I first bought the beer and held the bottle up to the light it looked clear. Then I put it in the fridge over night and the next day it was very cloudy. I guess the yeast are more active when the beer is cold.

Smell is of orange, banana, and some clove typical for a weiss beer.

Taste upfront is some clove followed by some spice then the banana notes with some hints of orange finish is very smooth with an aftertaste of yeast. Very pleasant beer to drink. Sets on the palate nicely.

Quality beer with a great mouthfeel and exceptional taste. One of the best weiss beers I've had.

A - pours a hazy dark yellow with a beautiful 1.5 finger head that stays around for a while

S - you definitely won't mistake this for anything but a hefeweizen. Strong hints of banana and some lemon zest, with a touch of spiciness and clove.

T - taste as the nose suggested - banana is the most dominate flavor at first with some bubblegum and faint citrus playing the supporting roles on the palate. Some of the spice makes an entrance, and eventually takes over as this warms.

M - full and smooth - great mouthfeel

D - maybe it's the 90 degree heat or the massive amount of studying today, but this one really hit the spot. The flavor wasn't as well rounded as some of the other hefeweizens out there, but this is still a very good wheat ale from Germany. You won't be disappointed if you buy it...

This is a good starter weizen for the new guy getting to Germany. Although it is a wonderful beer it doesn't come off as strong as some of the other weizen. It has a well balance aroma with just a small hint of clove. It is mainly for of a peppery banana. This beer has an awesome appearance. It is hazy brass colored with a thick creamy off white head. Mild flavor with a great wheat flavor that is not overpowered by the usual esters. If this beer doesn't get you hooked on weizen there is no hope.

5 litre mini keg.

pours in to my weizen glass a turbid and cloudy sunset yellow, with a huge whipped up meringue like head which is extremely slow to recede. lots of chunky lace and collar. aroma is a delectable combination of banana and clove with some peppery spice mixed in. taste is a nicely balanced mix of wheat and estery spiciness. lightly bitter from some grassy hops. a hint of booziness appears and melds into the spice profile. creamy mouthfeel and with a velvety texture. full, round, supple body. drinkable and quenching. a very nice beer to start out my holiday weekend. now it's time to start the weber and get out on the patio.

Poured from 50 cl bottle into a weizen.

A: Nice golden color. Medium heavy carbonation pours into a colossal, frothy, white head. Really pillowy head settles slowly leaving giant pocks and craters as it does. Minimal spotty lacing. Carbonation continues to rise throughout.

S: Wheat and yeast. Hay is very prominent, and just a hint of lemon zest.

T: Tastes like it smells. Yeast flavor is really pleasing. Nice wheat base, and lemon kind of fills the nose as the wheat and yeast hit the palette. Very nice.

M: Light and refreshing. Flavors are subtle and nothing really washes out anything else. Not much of an aftertaste (which I personally think is the way a weizen should be).

D: Excellent. Good flavor balance.

Really solid atmosphere. Really nice appearance, full nose with a broad range. Flavor also covers a nice broad range without any aspect overpowering another. Great balance. Overall, this is really good quaff.

On tap at Monk's in Siouix Falls

One of the best Hefe's I've had.

Everything I like in a hefe is here....dominant flavors are banana and vanilla..also evident is bubblegum, and some light cloves..

The banana flavors are bright but not oversweet...the flavoring is perfect in that it has a nice flavor but doesn't overwhelm you...highly drinkable...thirst quencher....had this after running for 40 minutes in the humid Sioux Falls heat and it really hit the spot....

Would love to have a keg of this for the summer....right there with Ayinger, Weihenstephener, Paulaner...hard to say what is best

My 150th Review!

Poured into a Weizen glass from my Alma Mater.

From a 16.9oz bottle.

A - Pours a hazy straw colored gold with a dense white head tat goes up about 1.5 in. Active and visible carbonation can be seen rushing up from the bottom of the glass. The head is pretty well retained and some sticky lacing is left.

S - Nose is a bit light. Some bready notes and nuttiness from the yeast. Not much banana hints as expected.

T - The yeast is more prevalent than other Hefe's if tried. Yeast and dough is very prevalent almost no banana notes. Peppery and spice is prevalent similar to a good Pils but with the slight clove. Some citrusy hints are perceptible, subtle tangerine and some lemon. There is a very clean spice finish that is pleasant and crisp.

M - Very well carbonated, crisp and clean. Active bubbles massage the tounge and mouth.

D - Very refreshing like most Hefe's I know. Good choice definitely not the best or my fave.

Bavarian Hefeweizen pours a hazy light gold color. Backlighting gives it a slightly yellow look. It's topped with a vanilla colored head that easily stands three fingers tall. It held up fairly well and took its time receding. A light trail of lace followed along as it descended.

The nose is alright. Initially, it smells very yeasty and doughy. That's followed by a fairly strong grainy smell. It's nice and earthy. Clove emerges and really seems to take over the nose once it does. It smells a little too strong. A little banana is present. That's a little disappointing. It just doesn't seem to have a nice banana/clove balance. It's skewed too far in the spicy direction. Still not bad though. Just a little off from my preference.

The flavor profile isn't materially different. It's very spicy from the first sip. Clove and pepper flavors are a little too intense. Yeast and light citrus flavors follow. Light lemon and orange are the most notable flavors. I thought I picked up a little banana on the nose, but I'm not getting even that much in the flavor. That's disappointing. A world class Hefe needs to bring the banana. Grainy and earthy notes permeate throughout. It finishes grainy and spicy. To be fair, this is a pretty good Hefe. It's actually surprisingly good given its banana deficiency. Still a far cry from competing with the world's best though.

It has a lighter body that's nearly smooth. Carbonation is active, but doesn't hurt the feel in any way. Not bad. Drinkability is actually good. The flavor could be better, but is pretty good. It goes down easy and fast. I don't think I've encountered a Hefe that didn't have good drinkability. Knock on wood.

Bavarian Hefeweizen is a pretty good Hefe, but doesn't have nearly enough banana to be a great Hefe. The spicy aspect of it is just a little too strong and perhaps even masks some of the banana flavor. I don't know. Nonetheless, working out that kink would improve it quite a bit. Despite that shortcoming, it still manages to be pretty tasty. It won't displace any of the world's best Hefes, but it's definitely worth a try. Even a pretty good Hefe will suffice this time of year, no?

Cloudy peach colour with a fluffy white head. The cap settled slowly until it reach a quarter inch thick and it produced clumpy lace. Aromas of cloves, lemon, white bread, dough, and a hint of banana. Lots of wheat in the flavour, spice and citrus were mild, quite bready with a little fruitiness. Smooth, nearly slick texture, average carbonation, medium/light bodied. Decent, but it didn't blow my socks off. It's a nice drinking hefe, well balanced, but a little more punch would make this a lot more memorable.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a 16oz pint glass. Firm pour evokes 3 fingers of the purest white head made up of very fine bubbles. Head falls fairly quickly, leaving a 1/8th topping. Some spotty lacing. Color is a cloudy pale yellow.

Nose- Nice sweet orange nose. Some yeastiness. Very nice.

Palate- Fruity, with prominent citrus, sour lemons and unripened oranges. Very dry, with some underlying spice. Clean crisp finish.

Mouthfeel- Very nice and lite, active.

Drinkability- Great.

500ml bottle $3. Very nice looking golden, cloudy color, served in a pilsener glass. The smell was cloves and bubblegum with extra yeastiness. The taste starts out very nice with a strong bubblegum component but then finishes with a buttered popcorn flavor that I do not care for at all (diacetyl?).

A great orange-yellow appearance with a delicious frothy head made this drink incredibly appetizing. A strong citrus/orange fruit flavor was particularly noticeably along with bready textures. Taste was pretty sweet but had an odd syrupy aftertaste to it. A crisp carbonation aided in a beautiful body that was great to look at. Overall, a great hefeweizen.

Pours a hazy apricot color with minimal white head and some action.

Banana and wheat malt aroma with esters.

Nice wheat grain taste with butter and banana. Esters are well balanced within.

Light bodied, resinous and buttery, with lively soft carbonation.

Another great session beer from Germany and well balanced.

Half-liter German bottle with no freshness date. It pours an opaque peach, with medium carbonation and a big, fluffy, pockmarked white head that reduces quickly, and leaves a few spots of lacing. Earthy yeast and nutty grains in the nose, with a light dose of papery oxidation. Tastes of nutty wheat, spicy noble hops, yeast, bubblegum?, hints of tropical fruits, a faint breath of alcohol, and lingering pear on the back of the throat. It has a medium body with ample carbonation, and smooths out very well toward the end. Incredibly easy to drink, and a well-built hefeweizen, but I could use some more banana yeastiness.

Purchased from Ramsey Liquors, $2.99. Served at just over fridge temperature in a weissbier glass, the code 1826273 is lasered on the back of this 16.9oz bottle.

Appearance- Initially crystal clear and golden, the clouds appear as the unfiltered yeast is swirled in. Sexy and bone white is the three finger crown, spilling just slightly over the top of the glass. The lacing is minimal, occurring in patches around the perimeter. It's one of the murkier weissbiers I've had the pleasure of sampling.

Smell- A traditional aroma of wheat malt mingles with bright notes of tropical fruit... less obvious is the usual bubblegum and clove character I would have expected, however there is a mild burnt or toasted nose to this.

Taste- Pleasing, balanced flavors of wheat malt and associated esters that define the hefe-weizen style. Banana bread, malt, mild clove, and a gentle floral hop finish grace the palate and encourage the next sip.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- The mouthfeel is flawless and dazzling... crisp and active for the first second and then, like magic, becomes seafoam and velvet in the mouth. For the price, it's a solid $1.30 more per bottle than Franziskaner or Paulaner... that alone would inhibit choosing this example over its less expensive peers. Glad to have tried this though, I wasn't disappointed.
