This sub-style of a Weizen interests me in a big way. I'm inexperienced with Schwarz-Weizens, but I won't be for long. Reading other poster's comments, I think some are erroneously comparing this black roasted malt Weisse to the standard Weizens. This is - and was meant to be - a completely different animal. The chocolatey coffee malts add an exciting dimension to the Weizen world. For me, this style provides the perfect nightcap to an evening of Weizening. Dark it up before you slumber. I can't wait until the American crafters concentrate on this treasure of a style. That should be interesting. Any takers?

Febr. 2013: 500 ml swingtop bottle, will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.4%. Dark brown colour, huge beige head. Lovely strong aroma of banana, cloves, mildly roasted malts and rye bread, a hint of chocolate. Bready flavour with mildly roasted malts and chocolate again, some cloves and banana in the background. Not too sweet. Low on hops, as normal for the style, but the roasted malts make the finish acceptable. Beautifully balanced, a very fine Dunkelweizen.

Poured pint bottle into weizen glass. Light khaki head, goes down to cola fizz. Deep dark chocolate brown.

Nose is raisins and dark oats. Taste follows with a creamy sweetness, and a sort of smoky rye flavor.

Medium dry finish.

This is a great beer. One of the best dark wheat beers on the sweeter, smoother side.

Got this one at the Mitra in Maarssen

From a 50cl swing top bottle into a weissen glass

APPEARANCE: Pours a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy off-white head with good retention. Opaque bistre brown with no carbonation evident. Head fades to a nice, creamy cap. A half wisp remains leaving touches of lacing down the glass as it empties.

SMELL: Bolder nose of wheat malt, clove, bubble gum and light citrus aromas. Hints of bread as well. A light touch of roasted aromas and toffee from the darker malts. Very nice.

TASTE: Wheat, clove and bready flavors with some sweet toffee up front. A bit of bubble gum and some roasted character at the swallow as well. Bold finish of wheat malt, bready flavors, sweet toffee, clove spices, bubble gum and a touch of roasted malts linger on the palate. Great.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes a touch dry. Same as the regular weisen.

OVERALL: Really good. Love this version of a dunkelweiss. Reminds me quite a bit of the Erdinger dunkelweiss which I love so much. Great stuff and I enjoyed this one more than their normal helles weizen. Cheers!

Pours a dark brown color with a thick full tan head. Head dissipates steadily leaving a thin ring of tan foam along the outside of the beer.

Smell has notes of dark fruit, toffee, spices and cloves, and dark plums. This must be rather old as the wheat has all fallen off.

Taste has notes of dark fruit and plums. Surprisingly watery and bland. Some mild nutty flavors on the back end.

Feel is thin and watery. Mild carbonation.

Overall this is alright - its probably better if you can have it fresher, but the watery bland flavor and feel isn't an age issue.
