I had greatly anticipated the opening of this bottle. Had heard some nice comments about it, but as soon as I opened it, I smelled skunk. Same as Heineken. Guess I am not a German Pilsner kind of Guy. Maybe it was not fair since I had just finished a bottle of Pranqster Belgian Style Golden Ale that was excellent at 92 points! I just don't like the skunky in a beer. I will not buy again.

11.2 oz. bottle poured into pilsener

L: yellow, crystal clear, 1/2-inch white foam head that looks like it's sticking; lots of bubbles rising up in the column ... not the most I've ever seen, but enough to form a good white collar and a decent little skin of foam on the top

S: corn, grain, sour grain, sour corn ... easily the weakest link of this brew -- if you try hard enough, you can smell some bread malt, but it's mostly sour grain

T: English pale ale fruity ... it's super sweet and shows no hop-profile at all at first -- it's a bread-malt bomb that comes off very English pale ale-like; then the hops show up, real green/grassy with only the slightest bitterness all in the most subtle form ... the hops give more flavor than bitterness ... it's not a "bite"; get some earth/black pepper hop tastes late

F: a tad soft for the style ... there's a lot of bubbles in the column and I'm tasting/feeling the carbonation, yet it's just a hair watery and kind of slick ... could be me

O: that fruity start is kind of wild for the style ... it's so sweet it truly comes off like an English pale ale at first; that sweet fruity twist is cool, and overall it's a tasty, drinkable brew, but it's just a hair above average. i'd use this beer for "gateway" purposes because it's so sweet to start off with that even non-beer drinkers might enjoy it

A- It pours a crystal clear pale golden straw with a fluffy, pure white head. Good head retention, excellent lacing. There are below streams of bubbles rising in the glass.

S- It smells somewhat sweet, lots of biscuity malt, and it has an ascertive grassy hop aroma. The whole thing comes together very well.

T- crisp and clean. Light malt highlighted by a somewhat spicy hop profile.

M- light, refreshing, clean. Perfect for a hot day, or any day for that matter.

O- this is a really good pilsener, highly recommended.

I purchased a 5L mini-keg at State Line Liquors in Elkton, Maryland during a Veterans Day run and when I was invited to a Super Bowl party, I thought that it might be just the occasion to break it out. Boy, was I right! People marveled at it and they really liked the beer for being usually non-discerning about their beers.

From the CAN: "Total quality since 1872"; "With integrated tap/pull handle!"; "Best before: See top of [CAN]; "Ingredients: water, barley malt, hops, hops extract"; "Keep cool"; "Brewed by Kulmbacher Brauerei Aktien-Gesellschaft 95326 Kulmbach Bavaria, Germany, Niemcy"; "Brewed according to the Bavarian Reinheitsgebot [German Purity Law of 1516]".

Yes, it is a CAN as it is not pressurized and pours via gravity. I would get a quick finger of soapy, bone-white head with limited retention. Color was a button-bright golden-yellow (SRM = 4 to 5) and Midas, Croesus and Mammon suddenly crashed our party, desirous of a sip. It smelled great, like strong honey underlain by a pleasant grassiness. It was most definitely a German Pilsner! Czech Pilsners would be the opposite - grassy underlain by honey. My mouth was watering in anticipation. Mouthfeel was kind of light and thin, but that is to be expected in the style. The taste was very honey-like and I was reminded of the air freshener in my Ex-Old Lady's car. She is an apiarist and keeps honeycombs in the back of her vehicle, giving it a really honeyed scent. It was on the finish that I again tasted Noble (grassy) hops, giving the beer as semi-sweetness. This was a great example of the style, plus I got to turn some other people on to it as a result of its medium. You CAN believe that I am going to be looking into procuring more mini-kegs in the future!

Kulmbacher has been good to me. I hope it remains so. This is a beer which has stared me down at bottle shops for years, and now am finally getting around to trying. 330 ml of pilsner during an unusually warm January. On to the beer:

The beer is pale golden with visible bubbles rising from bottom to top. The head is soapy looking and an inch thick. Not only is the head retention good, the lacing provides several thick rings. It smells okay, grainy with a vague sweet malt, woody, and lightly herbal.

The flavor comes together just as my head was casting doubt based on the aroma. Tastes a little clean with grassy, woody, and raw grain flavors. It has a soft body with gentle crispness and even a touch of creaminess. True, another German pilsner, but it's certainly better than the Warsteiner's of the world.
