I found this in a grocery store on the south side of Moscow. It comes in a tall dark brown half liter bottle with a flip top and a dark fairly plain label. Ingredients conform to the purity law (of course). Best before 10/17/03, I opened mine on 9/8/03. I just couldn't face another mediocre Russian pale lager for my 200th review. This will do nicely.

Beautiful clear deep mahogony just barely translucent lies under a thick reddish tan head that lingers well and leaves nice lace rings down the glass. The nose is nutty, with caramel and just a tinge of sour. The mouth is reasonably well carbonated, and a touch on the heavy side. The taste is roasted chestnuts, malts and a bit of toffee. I don't detect the hoppy bitterness the label promised, but there is a bit of a bite in the finish. The aftertaste is clean, somewhat sour but mainly roasted malt. No complaints here - I could drink a few of these on a cold Moscow September night...

This whole experience was slightly better than average. It poured a dark red colour, crystal clear, with a huge, foamy cap that left thick, sticky lacing. Much light (colour) than I was expecting. Smell seemed fairly balanced with nice, sweet malts, as well as an earthy hoppy smell. Taste was heavier on the malt side than the hop side, and had, what seemed to me, a bit of a wood-like taste. Interesting. Mouthfeel was nothing special. Smooth, drinkable. Just a mark or two above average. Not bad.

This brew is a dark brown cola color with a medium thick beige head and fair lacing. Smoky aroma, with some roasted coffee and caramel. Medium-bodied and earthy with flavors of hops, toasted malt and smoke. The finish is carbonated and mildly bitter. All in all a decent Schwarz.

Mönchshof came in a cool flip-top bottle and poured a dark brown color, very reminiscent of a cola. Half inch head of tan foam capped this schwarzbier. The nose is mostly roasted malts. Tastes surprisingly light for a beer of this color, definitely a lager. A good brew and very drinkable at just under 5%.

german Black beer whitout the great of the english; mouthfeel and taste well ballanced in bitterness, malt and hops; good whit kielbasa sausage, salads, american food, much better if serving in a pilsner glass, recommendable, smell like a characteristic german beer, made by expert brewers.

Poured from a cool 1pt .9oz bottle into hotel glasses. The bottle had the "Grolsch" type fastener on top, and made a satisfying pop when opened.

The appearance is burnt copper with spitty white head. The smell is mostly malt, hinting some roasted malt flavor.

The taste is not as rich or satisfying as I'd hoped, but it isn't really bad... It's a smooth malty lager, just a little bitter on the back end.

Decent mouthfeel and easy to pound.

16.9oz flip top bottle. Pours black in color with mahogany hues when held up to the light. Aroma is clean with roasted malt and cocoa. The smell is really nice, there just isn't enough of it as it is too faint. Taste is delightfully smooth roasted malt, coffee and a faint taste of chocolate. The taste much like the aroma is good but it is lacking that extra punch. Overall, this is a good beer that would make for a great session with it's low ABV.

Hard to find this beer on Beer Advocate, can't figure out how to spell it with the o. Anyway, tried this out from a fellow Carolina Brewmaster at our annual Memorial Day BBQ. Cam eout of a flip top bottle. Not a very dark Schwarzbier, smells like roasted malt. Coffee and caramel taste and finish. Thin body. Nothing great, but glad I tried it.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown body with mahogany-hued edges and a full, frothy head.

Smell: Soft aroma of roasted malt with hints of milk chocolate, dark caramel, and fruit.

Taste: Dark maltiness with enough roasty hints and dark caramel to bolster this humble lager. Light touch of chocolate and fruit. Mild hoppiness with very little imparted bitterness, but enough to clean up the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: A fairly easy-drinking, competent schwarzbier.

Dark brown body with reddish-amber hues and healthy, lasting lacing. Aroma is clean and light with notes of roasted malt and sweetish Munich maltiness. Tastes particularly smooth and easy going for the style with moderately strong flavors of burnt malt, even charcoal, and chicory. Some nuttiness. Medium bodied with hops that balance the malt well leaving a relatively dry finish. Easy to drink in large doses. A solid beer. On Tap At Maduro.

Reviewed on 3/16/08. On tap at Ebenezer's (served in a huge mug!!) Poured an opaque black with a thick white head. Taste of pizza dough, bock goodness. I've never had a schwarzbier before and this reminded me of a dopplebock. A good beer, nice and refreshing. Easy to drink. 6/4/7/4/14 (3.5/5)

Update 10/31/08: Had this from a bottle and it tasted similar to how I remember so I will not add any new comments, but I thought it deserved slightly better than a 3.5 so I upped the aroma by 1 point. Nice drinking swartzbier! 7/4/7/4/14 (3.6/5)

A: Molasses colored beer, maybe a finger's width worth of slightly off-white head on top of the beer. The head dissipates quickly and leaves some light lacing.

S: Sweet caramel, toasted grains, molasses (maybe that just pops into my mind because that's how I described the color). A nice smelling beer.

T: Lots of flavor up front. Caramel, coffee, toasted malts, a little bit of a grainy taste. Sweetness gives way to a malt bitterness in the middle. The finish is a little weak. While there is a woody hop presence, there isn't enough to balance out the front end of the beer. That makes me want to keep drinking it constantly so the initial flavor doesn't fade out and leave me disappointed.

M: Moderate body, above-average carbonation.

O: A great tasting beer, but out of balance, which leaves me wishing for more hops. The roasty flavors are great, the malty goodness up front, the coffee, but I probably wouldn't get it again.

Poured a deep brown color with modest tannish head.
Smell is a fine combination of dark druits, toffee, and caramel.
Taste also shows caramel and dark fruit, along with some nice roasted malt.
Mouthfeel is full and creamy, and adds some bread-like notes.
A nice beer, but nothing great.

Taste: Pleasant medium body of roasted grainy flavors , very light milk chocolate , some grainy bitterness as well as some lightly grassy hop.

Pours a clear, dark brown color. Great, 1 inch head of a pale tan color. Great retention and good lacing. Smells of earthy malt, hops, sweet malt, and yeast cleanliness. Fits the style of a Schwarzbier. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp with a high carbonation level. Tastes of earthy malt up front, yeast cleanliness second, then the sweet malt and hop background come through, the finish is a bit sour/bitter with hints of roasted malt. Overall, not a bad schwarzbier, but I've had better - the hops aren't nearly as strong as the bottle claims.

This beer pours a clear dark reddish brown with a moderate rocky tan head. The mouthfeel is thin-firm. The smelll is rich roasted malt. The taste is very mild roasted malt with dry hoppy bitter finish. This is a drinkable, mild malty beer that is pretty enjoyable.

Pours a very dark brown with a thin creamy head. Light penetrates the bottom and sides of the pint glass, creating a mahogany effect. Crisp, clean aroma with faint floral hops. There is also a slight malty undertone to the aroma. The taste starts off with a hop bitterness that transitions nicely into a malty presence. During the swallow, and leading to the aftertaste, there is a strong dark chocolate presence that surprised me. After a few sips, little burps began that brought the hoppiness back into the mouth. The mouthfeel is crisp and clean, what you expect form a lager. It is heavily carbonated.

A rather strange beer. I liked it, but found the rather strong aftertaste a little off-putting. This was my first schwarzbier, and I wonder how this one compares to others in its class.

A very good black beer, yes lots of dark malt and roast. No coffee nor chocolate, just balanced. Well carbonated, a good scattering of lace. Easy drinking mid mouthfeel, very drinkable. On the sweet side though dry finish and a bit peppery. Good brewery.Liked it.

The beer poured a fairly dark brown with some ruby highlights and a light brown head. The smell is mostly toasted malts with a bit of vanilla character. The taste starts off with some toasted caramel malts that gives way to some subtle hops. The mouthfeel is slightly thick with a moderate amount of carbonation, and the beer is very drinkable. A good version of a somewhat rare style, a great one for people who are interested in Schwarzbiers to try.

Poured this into a tulip glass. It's a dark, dark brown. I could faintly see my fingers through the glass. A 1-finger head kept enough for a while and left some nice lacing.

The aromas I got were of heavy malt, molasses, brown sugar, caramel, and milk/dairy.

It's heavy on the roasted malt flavor. Nutty, and a little creamy. Maybe some bakers chocolate flavor in there. Didn't notice much in the hops arena.

Mouthfeel was thin but very smooth. Mild carbonation. Drinkability was super easy at the 4.9ABV and thin body.

I love the black lager style, and this one satisfied me. Stellar? No, but it tastes classic and old fashioned, and I love that.

0.3 Litres: on tap in Dicker Vertin, Charlottenburg Berlin on 22nd Jan 2014.

Pours a dark brown to black colour (what a surprise) with a full tanned head of sticky foam that sent me to wash my hands after picking the glass up the first time.

Semi-sweet malts rule this brew and they let you know straight away by the smell. Chocolate and coffee aromas waft around the glass and fill the air.

Those same malty aromas appear in the mouth as the malty molasses within the brew give of their flavours.

I've knocked Schwarzbier body depth before, this however wasn't weak and watery like so many: this had a good robust feel to it, almost rich and creamy in fact.

One of the better beers I've had in this style.

This Beer pours a deep brown with amber tones and has a creamy two finger head, it leaves a good amount of sticky lacing on the glass. The aroma is buttery roasted malt with a hint of chocolate. The taste varies from coffee to charcoal and chicory with a touch of chocolate in the finish and a hint of spice (pepper?). The mouthfeel is very smooth and creamy, it’s a medium bodied beer and somewhat dry by the end. This is an excellent example of the style its complex on the palate yet easy to drink and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good beer.

Poured from the bottle into my sniffer it had a dark brown color with relative clearity (for being a schwarzbier). The aroma had a perceived sweetness in combination with a grainy, cereal quality. The flavor was very smooth, slightly dry with hints of spice and sourness. Because of its smooth, lagered taste, this beer has amazing drinkabillity.

Pours a dark black color with a rich tan head that holds up very well and leaves a lot of lacing behind.

Smells of roasted malt with a touch of chocolate.

Taste is mostly similar to the smell with a distinct roasty profile with notes of chocolate and caramel. The taste is a little watered down and not as strong and lively as the aroma.

Medium bodied with a fairly smooth mouthfeel but feels a little watered down. Overall pretty solid, worth a try and an easy drinker.

Looks great poured into a tall weizen glass, as it presents a dark mahogany body and a large tan head, which dissipates to a film an leaves nice spots of lace behind. The nose is quite subtle, but has nice notes of caramel and lightly roasted notes, mixing in with a touch of tobacco. Likewise, the flavour is quite straightforward, with caramel, nut and cocoa flavours melding together into a pleasant whole. Quite simple, but nicely done, and it doesn't last long in my glass. Body is medium-light with a moderate carbonation.

This was a pleasant drink, though not really a memorable one. It's a well-constructed schwarz that I probably won't look for again.
