Appearance: Pours with a decadent light brown head of about three fingers. The head settled in but was present while drinking. Random lacing left behind. There is some dark brown color along the edges of the glass but primarily sits jet black. Active carbonation is low.
Smell: Black licorice and toffee sweetness greets the drinker. Molasses lightly compliments dark roasted malts on the body. The yeast profile comes off with some butterscotch and airy bread.
Taste: Toffee, brown sugar, and black licorice open up right away. The body is filled with lightly roasted malts and some balanced dry coffee grounds. Nothing overpowering, very balanced and extremely drinkable. Some amber malt notes and caramel picked up on the back end.
Mouthfeel: Sweet front, very drinkable yet roasted malts on the body. The finish has a touch of dryness which keeps you reaching for another drink. Active carbonation is on the lower side but works here.
Overall: Very well done brew. Noticeable roasted malt notes are kept in check yet still very prevalent. Running caramel, licorice sweetness throughout provides lighter tones for the palate. An affordable bottle that is a great benchmark for the style.

Poured from the bottle into a pokal glass.
A bit murky looking color and appearance, but a real nice mahogany and reddish colored body, with some nice rising faint bubbles. Head is easily three fingers tall, foamy, full of swiss cheese retention and coffee cocoa brown in color. A little bit of soapy lacing. Neat looker.
Real nice clean aroma. Light powdered cocoa, hints of light cream and drip poured diner coffee. Some fresh ripping grain to match. This is very solid.
Palate comes with a lighter body than I expected, but more than delivers on the taste. Light amounts of milk chocolate and wafer like crispy malts. Small hints of milk and coffee finish, with a hints of clove like aroma. Slightly fruity interestingly, with a dry aftertaste and grain aromas that really last.
Overall a real clean and refreshing Schwarzbier, good one to know about, but probably enjoy Kostritzer a bit more.
