500 ml bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly crystal clear dark brown color with a small foamy light khaki head with decent retention, that reduces to a thin lacing cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, toffee, molasses, light dark fruit, and roast/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of roast/bready malt and yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, toffee, molasses, light dark fruits, and roast/yeast earthiness. Light amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, toffee, molasses, light dark fruit, and roast/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of roast/bready malt and yeast ester flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a very nice schwarzbier style. All around good robustness and complexity of roast/bready malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

I knew that I had another Schwartzbier held in abeyance so when I spied this one on the shelf at Hunger-N-Thirst, I decided to pull the trigger. That, and it is a snazzy bottle!

From the bottle: “World Classic [-] The Original Black Beer”; “Brewed according to the German Purity Law of 1516”; “’**** - WORLD CLASSIC’ – Michael Jackson”; “Monchshof Schwartzbier – ‘the Black Pils’ – is a brewing wonder, and a beer lover’s dream. Supremely drinkable, dry and beautifully hopped, yet loaded with dark roasted malt flavor.”

I hated to break the seal on this wonderful bottle, but once it was Pop!ped and the swing top swung, I began the pour in earnest. The pseudo-cascade was quick and formed a finger of dense, deep-tan head that looked like a muffin top. Color was Opaque/Black (SRM = 44) with NE-quality clarity and garnet highlights at the edges. Nose had a pronounced maltiness, almost like being in the malt room itself. It was earthy, slightly grassy and exactly what I was hoping for. Mmm. I broke out the pretzels for this one! Mouthfeel was full and creamy. The taste was chocolaty, slightly grassy, eminently drinkable. Finish was semi-sweet with the malt really leading the way, but not so aggressively as to be cloying.

Poured from a 1.9 oz flip top bottle, into a Tall weisse glass.

Beautiful dark brown with a creamy tan two finger head, excellent retention, excellent lacing

Malty aroma, hit of chocolate

Taste almost porter like, very little hop, but nice robust malty flavor,

Very smooth mouthfeel, little to no alcohol, could drink this all night, until it was nap time. Carbonation is perfect, creates the head, but drinks very smooth

Overall, this is exactly what the elders in this application say it is, an Outstanding Schwartzbier!

Schwarzbier pours a very dark almost black color with a nice large lacing head. There is a rich smokey malt aroma with small hints of chocolate. The taste has a very rich thick and creamy malt flavor, good peated flavors. The body is rather watery, but still some nice flavors. Overall a very flavorful beer, the only knock is the watery body.

Appearance: Pours with a decadent light brown head of about three fingers. The head settled in but was present while drinking. Random lacing left behind. There is some dark brown color along the edges of the glass but primarily sits jet black. Active carbonation is low.

Smell: Black licorice and toffee sweetness greets the drinker. Molasses lightly compliments dark roasted malts on the body. The yeast profile comes off with some butterscotch and airy bread.

Taste: Toffee, brown sugar, and black licorice open up right away. The body is filled with lightly roasted malts and some balanced dry coffee grounds. Nothing overpowering, very balanced and extremely drinkable. Some amber malt notes and caramel picked up on the back end.

Mouthfeel: Sweet front, very drinkable yet roasted malts on the body. The finish has a touch of dryness which keeps you reaching for another drink. Active carbonation is on the lower side but works here.

Overall: Very well done brew. Noticeable roasted malt notes are kept in check yet still very prevalent. Running caramel, licorice sweetness throughout provides lighter tones for the palate. An affordable bottle that is a great benchmark for the style.
