A fantastic little beer. The beer has a nice presentation with a very long neck and swing-top bottle. An excerpt from the back lable boasts a complementary phrase by Michael Jackson. With our without his praise, I recognize the quality of the brew, but lack the same degree of enthusiasm as he. The beer pours a wonderfully dark brown color with nice clarity, creamy head formation and stubborn 1/2" retention. Laces well. Aromas a light on the roasted end, giving a chalky, powdery scent. A boost of light caramel supplies the scent of malt, but no real hops detected in the nose. Flavors of well-attenuated caramel malt sets the stage, while the black malts give a mild, dry, coffee-like nuance to the edges. Hopped only to offset sweetness, the hops to marry into the bitterness of black malt well for a complex bitterness that doesn't overwhelm the light caramel flavor. Texture is medium- better than most lighter Schwarzbiers. Powdery, chalky, and dry in the finish with a light linger of coffee and caramel. Not my everyday beer, but pleasant nonetheless.

500ml swing top bottle bought from The Vineyard, Belfast...
Poured a very deep dark mahogany red / brown colour. Creamy head poured tight, thick and foamy then faded to thick pock marked covering... some light lacing clings to the glass...
Aroma - Lots of toasted bready and chocolate malts, treacle / brown sugar sweetness, toasted and maybe slightly burnt toast, some metallic traces, light pepperiness, faint smokey tobacco (cigar ?) notes, some date and fig fruitiness mixed with hazelnuts and pistachios, light coffee traces...
Taste - Good strong toasted bready malts, light chocolate notes, faint liquorice, raisin, fig and prune fruitiness, nice pepperiness, treacle / muscovado sugar sweetness, quite peppery, some earthiness, light saltiness...
Feel - Sharp initially then smooths out... light / medium bodied... very, very drinkable - an excellent session brew at only 4.9%
Overall - A very good Schwarzbier - as good as any i've tried... recommended...

This is one "sinister" beer due to it's dark, black appearance....yet it is wickedly tasty!!
S = Caramel, roasted coffee, and woodsy element in the background.
T = Fantastic mixture of sweetness (caramel with a hint of butterscotch) and a very faint hop bitterness near the end. The slight bitterness quickly disappeared, leaving a long finish of semi-sweet caramel bread.
MF = Thick, creamy, and smooth as velvet. The carbonation was moderate.
Overall, this is the best Schwarzbier that I've ever tasted, and one of the best beers, regardless of category, that I've had.

This beer had an amberish-black color to it with an overall medium head. The aromas were permeating the sweet smells of caramel and wheat with a roasty feel. The taste was a mix of fruity wheat and and bitterish hop greatness. It was thick, and full bodied, yet surprisingly light, making it a great beer to try out if you do not like heavy drinks. Overall, this was very good.

16.9 oz swag top bottle that made a nice 'pop gun' pop when opened, served in a large pilsner glass.
A - clear, dark brown color with a big fluffy head of tan foam that left a bunch of lacing.
S - roasted malty aroma with a hint of toffee sweetness.
T - sweet, dark roasted malt flavor is balanced with subtle hop bitterness for a dry finish.
M - light and refreshing.
D - great taste, light body and low abv help to make this an extremely drinkable brew.
Final Note: I know that at least one other reviewer said this, but I love the movie "Space Balls" so I'll say it anyway...

Pours a nice clean/clear dark brown color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger plus creamy tannish head, which leaves some nice sticky lacing. The nose is malty, slight roast, toffee, and caramel. The taste pretty much follows the nose, slight sweetness as well. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a pretty tasty brew, surprised me.

Clear, dark brown body with ruby highlights and a great head and lacing.
Strong roast, caramel, chocolate, and molasses in the aroma.
Very sweet taste with caramel and butterscotch throughout.
Smooth, mellow carbonation.
This is a hell of a beer. I will definitely be seeking it out in the future.

i like black beers and this one came highly recommended by my beer connoisseur friend.
poured nicely, half into a clear pint glass (to admire the visuals), half into a stonewear krug.
the color isn't really black, exactly, but a nice, dark ruby - quite pleasing to the eye. nice sturdy head of tan foam lasts until a couple sips in.
the smell is very malty, earthy and rooty, but fairly faint.
taste is sweeter than i expected, rather licorice-like. toasty, then a bit bitter, then mostly gone, leaving only a lingering tangy bitterness like underripe fruit. the abrupt finish actually makes this more drinkable than i was expecting, especially with the sweetness up front. i like this quite a lot and see it as a better representation of the style than some of the other schwarzbiere i've had, which seemed more like watered-down porters than their own distinctive type.

I thought that Schwarz (Shvahtz) beers were supposed to be black, hence the name. The bottle even says "the original black". This beer is a dark ruby red. Guess I'll ask my German expert Ungespundet. Anyway that's why I knocked the appearance a bit. Otherwise it had a wonderful off white head that stuck around and laced well.
The smell was of dark, roasted malts with a hint of hops creeping through. Nice but not fantastic.
The taste was also a bit on the light side for the style, but has a nice roasty caramel woodsy mix that is delightful.
The beer drinks easy and is not heavy at all. Really enjoyed the complex flavors. A very good Schwarz but not the best. (KlosterBrauerei)

500 ml bottle- a gift from my sister, 1/2008.
Pours a clear dark brown with brown highlights. A thin cover is all there is for a head.
Aroma of sweet caramel and toffee with raisiny overtones. Slight alcohol notes that remind me of some port wines.
Very nice east drinker, that is generally sweet, but it's not overpowering beacuse it's reined in by a dry hop finish. Very nice overall.

Poured from a 5 liter party keg into an SA pint glass.
A: Poured a very dark brown amber with rich ruby highlights and a two-finger head of creamy foam.
S: Smells lightly hopped and a bit nutty in regard to the malt. Pretty clean smelling and sweet.
T: Great combination of lightly toasted malts, sweet caramel tones and cleansing hops that add a nice little shock of bittersweetness. It's very light drinking for a dark beer, which ups the drinkability by leaps and bounds.
M: Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and very crisp for a dark beer. Not what I was expecting.
D: At a shade under 5% ABV, and with a great light body and flavor, this one is dangerously drinkable and a world class session brew.
I recommend the party keg of it also, because in the highly unlikelihood that you don't finish it, it's there the next day. Very consistent taste and pour all evening. May the Schwarz be with you!

Pours pretty much black with a dark creamy head. Good malt and nut flavor (and also something very sweet and almost sugar-like that I cant identify). Very drinkable, doesnt not make the mistake of being too heavy. Perhaps a little under carbonated and lacking in head.

500ml Flip top. Beautiful dark mahogany beer, almost black, with a lovelly foamy, thick tan head. Dark malty aromas, little hopping .Creamy aroma also. Very nice semi-sweet dark malty flavour, a little sour, lactic even, dark chocolate hints in the back, slightly roasty, tiny amount of hop on the after taste. Very nice mouthfeel well carbonated. Overall an excellent black lager.

Brew poured to a dark brown color with some red and orange highlights when looking at it with a light behind. Has a nice think pillow of a head that is tan in color. Excellent retention, stuck around for most of the beer and left a nice amount of thing lacing lines. The aroma is very inviting, fantastic roasted notes with some chocolate, nut and earthy characteristics. The aromas alone for this brew make it very enticing. The flavor was excellent as well, the roasted flavors mix really well with the chocolate and caramel flavors. Extremely easy drinking based on the flavors present. The finish is nice and dry leaving you wanting more. The only knock about this brew is that to me it seems a little thin but all in all this is a very good brew and a excellent rendition of this style. Will get this one gain as it is solid, some other Schwartzbiers that I have had lately have been nothing but a disappointment.

1 pt, 0.9 oz bottle poured into a Weizen glass.
A = On the table a dark mahogany, held up to the light a clear garnet with good carbonation bubbling, big frothy head which recedes leaving fair lacing.
S = Chocolate, toffee, figs, a sweet, malty smelling beer. Very nice.
T = Burnt toast, toasted grains, bittersweet chocolate, nice, long bitter finish.
M = Light bodied, good carbonation.
D = Very tasty, a little light, good flavors but just slightly thin. Would definitely drink this again. Next time I'm in Germany I'll be happy to have it fresher.

Pours black with a nice crème head. Nose is very malty with a sweet tone to it. Flavor is beautiful robust. Thick malts that seem to have a spice to it abound. On the end I get some nice coffee tones. Feel has a good carbonation and a thick liquid feel. Nice and hearty and thick. Well worth trying, and even better on the bottle as I have had it on tap before.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown body with mahogany-hued edges and a full, frothy head.
Smell: Soft aroma of roasted malt with hints of milk chocolate, dark caramel, and fruit.
Taste: Dark maltiness with enough roasty hints and dark caramel to bolster this humble lager. Light touch of chocolate and fruit. Mild hoppiness with very little imparted bitterness, but enough to clean up the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: A fairly easy-drinking, competent schwarzbier.

A nice deep brown color w/ pretty auburn edges when held up to light. the head is nice and thick and tan.
Aroma of roasted malt, with some hops shining through, albeit subtly. The taste is also roasty in nature, I get a bit of a metallic or tinny taste toward the end. Finishes dry with a bit of a lingering bitter aftertaste, though it falls off quickly.
Light bodied, and nicely carbonated, this is real smooth in the mouth. A good drinkable Schwarz. I would recommend this to anyone.

Poured from the bottle into my sniffer it had a dark brown color with relative clearity (for being a schwarzbier). The aroma had a perceived sweetness in combination with a grainy, cereal quality. The flavor was very smooth, slightly dry with hints of spice and sourness. Because of its smooth, lagered taste, this beer has amazing drinkabillity.

Served at the Tap and Mallet in a stein.
It pours a black (duh) color with a light tan fluffy head. The head is sort of retentive, but there isn't much to keep it aloft since the carbonation is quite mild. The aroma is dry, mild hops, and toasted. The flavor is much the same with very faint watered down caramel notes mild hops and rye toast that keeps it short and sweet with every sip. The mouthfeel is good, not much residual sweetness or char. This provides a decent drinkability. The only thing that would eventually draw me away from this one would be boredom.

Poured from a flip-top bottle into a pilsner glass.Nice dark brown color. Very creamy-looking that head really lasts a long time. Intial smell of malts, caramels, faint leather. Taste is really good. The flavor reminds me of Spaten optimator, but no heavy mouthfeel. You get all the flavors of bocks-coffes, caramels, chocolate, malts, but without the sticky mouthfeel. I like this lighter quality. Very drinkable, very enjoyable.

A very dark brown beer, almost black with a big, creamy head.
Smell is roasted and has some light molasses. A good maltiness and some leather notes. The yeast adds a light sulfuric smell.
Taste is mild burned with coffee notes and a light maltbitter. The malt is also present and is light and fresh. A typical bottom fermented beer with a clean profile. This really tastes like a colored lager. Body is quite thin and could be a little bigger.

A - Poured out of the bottle into a flute. Poured a dark brown with ruby highlights, a finger of head that quickly fell leaving very little lace. Carbonation was very active
S - A very yeasty..bready smell, with just a very small hint of alcohol hidden very deep.
T - A bready roasted malt taste that finishes with a very small hop bitterness to just cut the roasted flavor..finishes dry
M - Very lively and carbonated..giving a very crisp drink, along with the dry finish makes this excellent
D - Overall a very drinkable beer..the elements of the beer come together to make it very enjoyable

Poured into a standard tumbler pint. Beer pours a dark brown opaque color with a creamy 1.5 finger head that lingers around for a while then disappears, but leaves a nice thick lacing on the glass as the beer is drunk.
The beer smells of chocolate and caramel malts. The taste is very nice and smooth with a milk chocolate flavor and slight roasted and caramel malt undertones. Almost no bitterness to the taste at all, though there is a little to round it out. It's amazing that this beer isn't a stout as it could easily be mistaken for one.
Mouthfeel is nice and smooth with ample carbonation, but not too much. The beer feels a bit creamy and full bodied.
This is a very tasty and drinkable brew. I wish I had more, but I only bought the 1 bottle. I could easily drink this all night.
