Monchshof's Schwarz pours like black coffee. Chestnut highlights glow along the bottom of the mug and a dense head of dirty white foam crowns the body. The head reaches two fingers in height and barely falls, becoming craggy and dense as it does. Foam spiderwebs the glass. Lookin' good!

The nose is slam packed full of goodness. A soft roast gets things moving before a smooth nuttiness joins the fray. A little black bread spiciness and a clean earthiness. Mild notes of coffee add to the mouthwatering depth. We have mild sweetness, soft roast, and a welcoming spice.

The flavor profile follows the path the nose suggested. Light roast comes in a wave laying down a solid base. The coffee is more pronounced than the nose suggested and pushes through to the finish. An undercurrent of both nuttiness and earthiness add depth and the spicy black bread rolls through on the finish and lingers slightly after the swallow.

There's a fullness to the body that's absolutely appropriate with an above average heft and a velvety feel. The carbonation is moderate and keeps the body moving. A touch of residual sugar sticks around after the swallow. Highly drinkable.

Monchshof is one of my favorite schwarzbiers out there. It's not as complex as some but the drinkability and enjoyment factor are off the charts. I could drink this by the case and do find myself buying it often. If you haven't had this beer yet and are a fan of the style, get some.

Pours a dark brown to black colour (what a surprise) with a full tanned head of sticky foam that sent me to wash my hands after picking the glass up the first time.

Semi-sweet malts rule this brew and they let you know straight away by the smell. Chocolate and coffee aromas waft around the glass and fill the air.

Those same malty aromas appear in the mouth as the malty molasses within the brew give of their flavours.

I've knocked Schwarzbier body depth before, this however wasn't weak and watery like so many: this had a good robust feel to it, almost rich and creamy in fact.

One of the better beers I've had in this style.

Poured from a bottle into a humpen German beer mug and a pint glass.

A-Deep black with some hints of deep red, but very black; nice tan and creamy 1 finger head; nice sticky lacing left on the glass and on the surface of the beer.

S-quite malty; semi-sweet chocolate; perhaps some ground coffee beans. Fresh.

T-Black licorice, semi-sweet chocolate, and black coffee. Hints of toffee. Very balanced. It was bitter-sweet and that's exactly the way I like them! The aftertaste had a mix of sweet choco, bitter choco from the hops, black licorice, slight alcohol; creamy and malty.

M-I have had several schwarzbiers that range from light, medium, and full bodied. This beer was medium to full bodied, but crisp and easy to drink. Could easily have a couple in one sitting. So creamy, smooth, and soft!

Overall, I recommend this to everyone. I felt like drinking another on my way home in the cab, but I didn't' have one to drink. It's quite a nice brew and it complements German schnitzel and kraut. It's one the best schwarzbiers I've had. Cheers!

Very dark brown, huge sticky foam, goes away fast leaving a nice half finger lace.
Smells of coffee, roasted malts, brown sugar, nuts and some low dark fruit.
Initial taste is rich malt, roasted but also sweet, with roasted dark bread, whole grain and slight chocolate cake. Notes of sweetened espresso coffee, caramel, low toffee. Dark fruit, especially raisins and sugared dry figs. Some citrus peel also, dark spices, cocoa powder. Earthy feel, mixed with a clear nutty flavor. Hop presence mild in the finish, with some mild bitterness, helped by the roast.
Mouthfeel is chewy, unfiltered, with low carbonation, a nice warm alcohol, typical for a schwarz.
A nice example, fresh and tasty. Great stuff.

Sampled back on 12/14/13. 550ml (16.9 ounce) bottle with a ceramic stopper was chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured into a brandy snifter glass.

Pours a deep opaque black hue in color with a 1-finger beige foamy head. LOTS of lacing was seen with each sip. The aroma is of roasted malts and chocolate. The taste is even better and very smooth with bitter-sweet chocolate that is perfectly done. No harsh or bitter aftertaste at all. Perfect carbonation. A great brew!
