Notes/Commercial Description:
Our Double Vision Doppelbock is brewed with Idaho 2-Row Pale and German Munich, CaraAroma, CaraMunich and de-husked Carafa malts to an original gravity of 24 Plato (1.096 SG). The malts provide a dark leather color with ruby notes, a luxurious tan head, and a bready aroma with a hint of smoke. It is lightly spiced with Liberty hops, an American version of the noble German Hallertau Mittelfruh, and fermented with lager yeast from a monastery brewery near Munich. In the traditional manner, Double Vision is fermented cold (48 F) and lagered a full 10 weeks for smoothness. At over 8% alcohol by volume, it is a deceptively drinkable springtime warmer.

Haven't had a doppelbock in a while, and I'm looking forward to this one. 2013 vintage. Tasted 16 April 2013.

Pours very deep brown, nearly black. Light behind it reveals deep reds, and a surprising clarity. One finger of tan head, good retention, nice lacing.

Smell is a brown sugar bomb, followed by figs and plums. It's all dark and sweet, and it's excellent. An amalgam of varied, intriguing sweetnesses.

Taste is a step down from the smell, but a small one. It's similarly sweet and fruity, but it doesn't have quite the same depth or variety as the smell. Has a nice soft bitter drift in the back end, that kinda lays on top of all that sweetness.

Feel is quite pleasant. Medium-bodied, almost chewy, with a light fuzzy carbonation that stays medium-low throughout. Quite good, actually.

One of the best doppelbocks I've had, in the realm of the classic European ones, and easily surpassing even the better domestic ones. It's really clean, with no rough edges, only sweet, rich, and dark. Yum.

When I first poured this beer into a pint glass, it had a huge head with a delicious smell to it, sort of like a cinnamon bun with extra brown sugar baked on top. The first sip tasted just the same; I could barely believe how good it was. Soon afterwards, a more typical doppelbock taste settled in: dark fruit, heavy malts, toasted bread. When I had another pint the next day, it was still pretty good, but it started to go a little flat by the third day after I opened it. It still tasted great though. One of the best doppelbocks I've ever had.

1 pt 9.4 fl oz bomber from FMcD's poured into a mug.

2013 version

A - Dark black with brown overtones. A two finger fluffy off white head that retains for a good amount of time.

S - Plums, vanilla, chocolate

T - More of the same as the nose, with a smattering of cherry and nuttiness. Coffee notes. The alcohol is undetectable at 8%.

M - Creamy with just a hint of carbonation on the finish.

O - A style that I thoroughly enjoy and seem to have gotten away from in the last few years. This is a solid and recommended offering.

I'm enjoying this beer on Christmas Eve. Served from a magnum bottle into a tall wheat beer glass. A moderate pour about 3/4 way full produces a billowy, rich tan, three inch head which takes awhile to settle down, leaving thick strands of froth all along the sides. The beer is a dark ruby brown (upon holding it before a strong lamp. This beer is very visually appealing.

I get some unique hoppy tones in the aroma- somewhat like a very subtle celery aroma. I also detect some obvious bready aroma-flavors. The first few sips seem very chocolaty. As the tongue becomes accustomed, dark fruits, nutty tones, and molasses-like malt flavors become more apparent. I also detect a very distinct coffee taste. Some earthy bitterness and a sharp dark fruit tang lingers on the palate, but just for a short time, and the finish is quite clean.

This is an excellent lager beer- a big beer that is quite smooth and easy drinking, yet with plenty of complexity.. I bought this magnum for about 9.99 at Henessey grocery in Butte, Montana, and consider it a good buy and a perfect beer to enjoy on a festive occasion.

2013 version

Poured out a deep, dark brown and mahogany color with a creamy, one-finger thick head. Rich malt aroma; roasted nuts and grains, toffee. Big roasted grain flavor with deep, dark fruity esters and a nifty boozy/bitter finish; hints of cocoa in the background. Heavy body, semi-sweet and smooth on the palate.

A very well-done doppelbock, combining balance and complexity superbly and creating a very tasty big lager brew. The chocolate-like background in the flavor is a real treat and gives this doppelbock a unique edge over much of the competition.

very billowy chocolate-milk-looking head, settles to fine bubbles lying on top of bigger bubbles beneath them...
smell is more like a dark brown ale, kind of nutty. kind of malty, some chalk....
taste is kind of sweet, but not a dopplebock sweet. this tastes nothing like a typical german dopplebock. it's slightly sweet at the finish with a bitter hop presence at the front.
at 8%, it's a decent brew, but it's not a dopple in my opinion. somebody got their recipes mixed up, I think.

A Pours a nutty tinted dark brown that reminds me a of the color of a nice starbucks bres. A 1.5 finger dark golden head and some substanbtial lacing. The head did not remain

S A toasty malted aroma with hints of caramel and perhaps a fruit like a plum?

T Nice, toasty, rich, malty and a hint of a sweet fruit. There is a warm flavor that reminds me this is a strong beer, but it nice and smooth

M - Thick, rich with moderately low carbonation

O - I really like this beer. To me, it tastes like a really nice dopplebock and provides the strength, richness and malt that I might expect.
