This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Howling Wolf Weizenbock was crafted with 40% wheat malt, including German Dark Wheat and Caramel Wheat malts, and minimally spiced with Liberty hops, an American version of the famous German Hallertau Mittelfruh.

Like all Bavarian weizen beers, the yeast is the star of this show. We used an authentic Bavarian top-fermenting ale yeast that naturally produces flavors of cloves, bananas, bubblegum, green apples, smoke, and even vanilla. When this yeast ferments a very strong beer, the resultant weizenbock is a wonderfully complex brew, hiding its 8% wallop under swirls of fruit and spice aroma—raisins, dates, prunes, bananas, cloves--and fruity, bready, chocolaty, caramel grain flavors.

red amber, nice yellow tan head

Fruits and a bit of malt to it as well, darker fruits with just a touch of banana.

Dark fruit, alcohol, a bit of clove, alcohol, yeast notes. Not bad, but none of the flavors were very strong. They all seemed dulled down and muddled. Nothing really shown through, which was a let down.

had good mouthfeel, nice carb, but drinkability wasnt the best.

Appearance - This is a beautiful darkish orange in color with maybe a tinge of brown and a nice, full, lasting head that gives the appearance of a smoldering acid pit.

Smell - The rich German yeast leaps from the glass along with a Belgianesque spicing profile. There is a very fine aroma of grain, about as good as grain gets at the nose.

Taste - The butter is huge at the taste, almost overpowering, and the spices are just as big as they were at the nose. The grain backbone is light and malty sweet.

Mouthfeel - That wonderful, authentic, German carbonation is done just right here by Grand Teton. It tickles the tongue, allowing the beer to almost float around in the mouth.

Drinkability - I really enjoyed this effort, maybe more so than most, and although the spicing deviated from style standard a bit it was a terrific drinker. It's very filling, too, so try this one on an empty stomach.

Poured from the massive 1L flip-top into a Schneider Weisse glass.

A- Hazy rust/amber with a thick, cream colored head.

S- Banana, clove esters, spicy yeast, and caramel malt

T&M- Rich caramel, fruity unripe banana, thick breadiness. Smooth and complex, but almost too sweet.

D- Very good rendition of this style. I've liked their Cellar Reserves so far.

The beer pours a hazy copper color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the toffee and bananas, exactly what I expect from a weizenbock. The flavor is more of the same. The toffee and caramel malt is pretty strong with some wheat, banana and clove notes also mixed in. As the beer warms, it starts to taste quite a bit like bubblegum. Very interesting. The alcohol is present but is not overpowering. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Massive 1+ liter, flip-top bottle. I always grab one or two of these when Grand Teton puts them out. Poured cloudy brown with lots of tiny bubbles and yeast particles. Thick, fat off-white head that stays around for the whole glass. Good lacing. Spicy, dark fruit aroma. Figs, plums, dates, all mixed with caramel/molasses and yeast. Thick, syrpuy mouthfeel detracts somewhat. Over-the-top sweetness that stays true to the style. Alcohol is heavy, as is the molasses and yeast combo. Banana and clove abound and are bathed in brown sugar and brown bread. Some fruit in the finish, but not nearly what comes out in the nose. Can't really say the wheat took center-stage in any part, but was always there. very good, but find a friend if you get on of these monsters.

1 litre flip-top bottle from Angotti Beverages. Initially, harsh carbonation. Leaving the bottle to air out several minutes helped it. Bold taste, creamy wheat in your mouth, this wb grew on me.Yeast and wheat.Big white head. Yes I finished all of it. Fresh wheat aroma.

Cellar reserve, bottled on May 5th, 2009. Poured from a 1L swing-top bottle into my Aventinus willibecher.

Liquid is a resplendent gradient of orange-red to metallic gold with amber highlights. [The brewer takes a more empirical approach by listing the Lovibond reading (15º)]. Light passing through the hazy body turns the glass into a glowing lantern. A fist sized column of foam fills the upper-orb of the glass, threatening to overcome the surface tension and spill down the sides at any moment; instead it recedes evenly to a solid half-finger of wheat-colored merengue. Thick lacing creeps down the glass, leaving a curling ladder of bubbles along its path. Faint legs.

Aromatics are pungent and complex, and seem predominately derived from the yeast. Comice pears, clove, fresh milk, wildflowers, banana and almonds all come to mind.

The flavor closely follows the aromas, adding a solid foundation of (melanoidin?) malt and hints of apricot. Mild sourdough and lemon-zest round out the palate, balanced by wheat and an alfalfa-like hop presence. Long bready finish with a touch of bitterness drawing you back in for another sip. Delectable, though I agree there is the slightest hint of iron lurking among all this abundance.

Creamy mouthfeel, with a pleasant warmth from the alcohol.

Grand Teton deserves high commendations for doing this style justice while putting their own subtle stamp on top of a traditional foundation. The depth of malt seems a little lacking compared to the very best examples of the style, but Grand Teton's careful utilization of yeast and balance of esters/phenolics is unimpeachable.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

I purchased this beer for two reasons, 1) The Howling Wolf on the label made me laugh, 2) I - that night - discovered the awesomeness of the Weizenbock style and was curious to try more of it. Really what you should take from that is I'm a consumer whore and will purchase things that make me giggle, take note breweries! With that being said, I wasn't disappointed in this purchase.

Howling Wolf Weizenbock comes in a bottle with a stopper on it that makes a nice pop sound when opening. If only they could figure out how to make it howl when you open it, this would be an easy 5 star beer. The pour proffered a very extravagant full hand worth of head that was kind of neat just to show off. The head stayed around for about two minutes before subsiding to drinking level. However, the head laced the glass as I continued to drink and there was always some foam around the top as I drank. There's also some occasional bubbling and carbonation in here that does nothing but just add to the ascetics of the look. Sadly, there's very little scent to this beer. The smell is very minute, with a hint of wheat, but just a hint. The look is a typical amber color that you can't see through. The taste is one note. There's no play when the beer goes down or when you first taste it. The good news is that it's a good flavor! The wheat has a role in this beer, but it's just the bass, there's some pepper on drums and the yeast is on lead guitar. All of it works really well together, but I see this being a beer that you and a buddy or two split, it's too one note for a single person. I like it, but there's very little play. Heck, I may purchase one again in the future but it will be with a friend or two when we're sitting around chilling.

this beer came from a growler from the brewery and poured out a amber ruby color with a little white head resting on top.

the smell is of wheat malt primarily and a bit of a sulfur/ester kind of smell from the yeast i suppose. fruity esters as well with notes of pear and perhaps apricott

the taste is sort of boozy, similar to a tawny port with soft vanillas and some caramely tones as well

the finish is med. body and a soft sugary palate. this beer was very drinkable and a delight as well. for being a bit high on the alcohol side this beer is a real drinker

Part of my recent Goebel's haul, looks like GT finally go rid of those annoying wax seals, yes!Good lacing & head retention

Opens with a nice hiss, pours an effervescent caramel with a thumb of tan colored head.

S: Bubblegum, figs, & ripe banana

T: Caramel, breadyness, ripe banana & dryness up front, a along with a whisper of booze. dryness, figs, semi-boozey banana bread follows as this warms. Finishes with cloves, bananas & dryness

MF: Medium bodied, warming, a bit chewy

Drinks pretty easy despite the complexity, I believe this one will get better over the next year or so, a bit rough around the edges. Still, I would happily drink this more often, if not so pricey...

Out of the mega huge 33.8 oz flip top bottle. Pours a clear light honey brown color with an average tan colored head that settled into a solid ring. The aroma is more bock like than weisse. Not that it is a bad thing, just different. The aroma is of roasted meat and prune with some clove spiciness. The taste is malty, bready. I really don't pick up much of the wheat. That being said, there is a nice bock flavor with the rich malt and meaty flavor. There is some clove and pepper spice flavor from the yeast but it plays a secondary role. Perhaps a very light tart wheat character can be found. The feel is light with tingly carbonation; overall fairly sweet with a light wheat crisp edge. More of a bock than weizenbock. The wheat is there but sits in the backseat. Not that its bad but I prefer more of a yeasty/wheaty weizenbock. Still a well made brew and enjoyable, similar to Penn's weizenbock.

Poured into a weizen glass. Pours an attractive bronze color with a very large tan head that slowly settles to a thick cap. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left on the glass. The aroma consists of banana (probably the strongest banana aroma from a beer I have sampled), cloves, and other yeast aromas. Not much from the malt. As I got nearer to the bottom of the bottle and could stir up the yeast, I could detect more fruity esters. Spice from the yeast is tasted from the get go. Some tart fruit along with bready malt and wheat flavors as well. Finishes dry and slightly alcoholic. Medium body with a really good carbonation. This beer is a good argument for bottle conditioning. A big beer in a big bottle. Better shared than consumed solo. I could see myself drinking this again.

Served on-tap at the Yard House in a pint glass. Pours a dark orange with a very creamy, but limited, head. It gives off the aroma of a hefeweizen, with orange peel, wheat, and sweet malts coming through. The initial taste when it hits the tongue is like a hefeweizen as well with a wheat bread taste, but smooths out a finishes with cloves and yeast. The 8% ABV is more noticeable on the back end, but overall the beer wasn't too hot. The mouthfeel was medium bodied and very creamy with decent carbonation.

Overall, I was impressed with my first taste of a Weizenbock, and I think Grand Teton did a good job with this one.

Got from ummagum - many thanks...and now Idaho off the list. Poured from a massive 1000ML swing-top bottle into a weizen glass. Neck sticker showed 2009 edition. Was a dark orange color with insane amount of carbonation which resulted in a massive 5 finger head and good lacing.

The aroma was classic wiezenbock - ripe banana, clove, dark fruits and caramel malt body. I enjoyed the aroma on this one better than some weizenbocks that have the dark fruits more prevalent than the banana and cloves. The taste followed the aroma and again I preferred to most weizenbocks since not as dark fruit heavy. Only complaint is that was very sweet and I found it distracting in the aftertaste. Needed a touch more hops to counter that. The mouthfeel was nice and chewy but the extreme amount of carbonation filled me up too soon and led to some severe burbing to clear some more room.

Overall, a really good weizenbock. It's a middle of the pack style for me so not going to get 4's and 5's but for a weizenbock this would be a high review for me. Recommend. Rotation - not available here but one is probably enough for me anyway unless I could try at the brewery.

Woo Hoo!!! Grand Teton is no longer waxing the Cellar Reserve line... Instead a blue foil coated paper label went up and over the swing-top of the big ole 1 ltr bottle... Paid about $13 today at the COOP... poured into my shaped SA glass.

Huge 3 finger head nearly foams over... be careful on the pour.... Great retention and lace.. the brew is just a touch cloudy with a color that resembles an orangey amber sunset... pretty.

Nose is maybe a touch lite for the style.. but by the time the brew warms up for the second glass, it's there nicely.... bready and a good amount of clove... some banana is there for sure but it is much less noticeable than the clovey element.

Flavor is a great spicy mashup .... cloves combine out of the gate with toasty maltiness... rich through and through.. no caramel.. but again a thick sustained malt palate from front to back.. the malts really tie this one together... looong finish on this one.. impressive.

the body is creamy and on the thicker side...

overall... this is seriously a great weizenbock... just remember to pour carefully... it may be a tad sweet (but what do i know?).... I've never aged weizenbocks before, but I may give this one a shot if I can find he funds and keep from trading this fantastic beer away... the thick maltiness is keeping me from giving this one a super score on the drinkability.. sorry.

This is like some godly lovechild between a scotch ale and a hefeweizen. I picked up a swing top bottle that was bottled in April of '09 and stored respectfully ever since.

A - Pours a foggy dark amber orange, with a tasty head that dissipates rather quickly.

S - The smell explodes out of the bottle. It smells much boozier than it tastes - but the smell is very pleasant nonetheless. Lots of fruit, raisins, starch.

T - A whole lot going on here. It seems as though you get a different side of the beer from every sip.

M - A little too syrupy for my liking. It's lack of drinkability comes from its slimy consistency.

O - Overall, this is a damn good beer that I'd like to try again. I'd be very particular about how it is stored. It's one of those beers that will pull a complete 180 on you if stored without respect.

My fiance picked this up for me at her work. 15 bucks for a bottle. Poured into a weizen glass

Appearance- amber color, thick head that retains well

Smell- banana, cloves

Taste- strong flavor, banana, maltiness, cloves

Mouthfeel- medium bodied

Drinkability- very nice, I really liked it.

Attractive 1-liter flip top bottle with 2009 vintage foil covering. Pours a hazy, light copper color with a voluminous light tan foam. Retention is good, lacing not so much.

Nose is pretty classically weizenbock...chocolate covered bananas and lots of cloves. There is also some red apple, cocoa nibs and sweet nougat aromas. Smells delicious.

Taste falls a bit on the sweet side of the WB spectrum, but has plenty of alcohol drying to help with the balance. Not much in the way of hops and lets the banana and clove flavors go insane. Some chocolate, but not a whole lot. This one falls somewhere in between a Vitus and an Aventinus with alot of higher alcohol notes. As much as I typically do not like to age weizenbocks, this one might be better after a year or so. Very good, not quite great...a touch too sweet and the alcohols a bit high for me. Glad I got to try this one though, and also glad I shared it with a friend, a whole liter of this to myself might be somewhat of a chore.

2009 release, acquired from COBeerBuff, courtesy of 666-3 BIF so a big "Thank You" goes out to him. Poured from a 1-Liter swing-top bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a deep orange color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a spotty on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, lager yeast, wheat, bananas and a little bit of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of wheat, lager yeast and a hearty malt character. Then some sweet flavors of caramel and banana quickly come in next along with a mild alcohol bite. The hops presence is mild but on-target for the style and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, good representation of style, this may be a solid beer but there are others in the style that I would choose first.

A big fuzzy head of 3 fingers fades quickly over hazy yeast chunked golden orange color with lots of bubbles.

Nose has lots of various stuff, citrus, light spices and corriander, orange peel, some sweet wheat, light creamy sherbert like aroma, bright and aromatic. Some nice Belgian fruits, a little fig even, and a light effervescence.

Tastes sweet, with more creamy orange sherbert, orange peel and spices, coriander, slight bitterness, touch of spicy warming booze. Lots of sweet wheat. Some light fruit flavors. A little bready malt like flavors with the piles on piles of wheat. A touch of a yeasty quality too, but not much.

Mouth is medium to lighter with some warming booze and toooons of carbonation.

Finishes with more sweetness, a little dryness, lingering creamy wheat and orange sherbert, spices, and spicy booze. A touch of orange peel bitterness.

Pours a hazy, golden color. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of sweet malt, citrus, slight yeast, slight spice (clove?), and slight olive aroma. Fits the style of a Weizenbock. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with a low carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, citrus, clove, and slight yeast. Overall, good aroma and mouth feel, but average appearance and body at best.
