Notes/Commercial Description:
Sweetgrass APA is a Pale Ale of distinction! 2009 Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal winner in the American Pale Ale category, this crisp and fragrant beer is hopped and dry-hopped with plenty of Amarillos and Cascades. Try it with any bold, flavorful food to complement its citrusy, resinous spiciness.

Pale reddish copper color. Maybe more like light amber, actually. Really excellent head and lacing that stick around right down to the last drop.

Crisp piney hops with a mild maltiness and a surprisingly smooth finish. A bit of citrus in there too. It's an underwhelming beer in some ways, but there's some kind of really bodacious kind of woodsy or grassy tinge to the aroma and that lingers on your palate after a drink. I'm really digging it.

People are saying this beer is "mild," but I'm not sure I totally agree. It doesn't kick you in the teeth the way some IPAs do, but it has a respectable bite to it.

Appearance - Pours a hazy copper orange with a huge, rocky off-white 3 finger head. Exceptional retention, resulting in a fair layer of surface suds and chunks of lacing on the side of the glass.

Smell - Grassy and lemony citrus, with slight spice and some light bready notes.

Taste - Follows the nose. Grass and mild lemon hop notes at the forefront and throughout. Clean, grainy and slightly bready malt base that might be too weak to notice unless you look for it. Hints of hop spice. Finish is lightly sour with a lemon zest aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium body with fair carbonation. Smooth with a crisp, semi-dry finish.

Overall - Nice take on the classic APA. A bit too sweet and sour for it to be an all-day drinker, but serves as a nice one-off or change of pace brew. Might benefit with a stronger malt backbone. In any case, one I'll revisit in the future.

Golden hay apperance, smells of moderate to strong citrus fruit, mild bubblegum, sweet. Taste is moderate grass/herbs, moderate citrus fruit, low sweetness, weak tart tinge, slight bitterness, dry finish. Mouthfeel is effervescent, light, very drinkable. Overall, decent and interesting. More herbal than I was expecting, but welcomed.

Bottle poured into a shaker pint.

A- Looks great, classic APA golden color, crystal clear except for flecks of yeast from the bottle conditioning. Three finger of head with moderate staying power and lacing.

S- not sure if this was the specific bottle or not but the overwhelming aroma is metallic. Very slight hop nose.

T- typical well made, but modest APA. Fantastic airport bar beer, but not one of my favorites. Citrus hops upfront with a surprisingly strong malt middle and a grassy hop finish. My rating is more indicative of my tastes, not how well the beer was made. This hits exactly what it was going for. If you are an APA fan, you will like this beer.

M- medium body, slight slickness or creaminess. Carbonated well.

O- Solid APA, too much alcohol for a true session beer, but it'd be easy to knock several of these back.
