Sweetgrass APA is a Pale Ale of distinction! 2009 Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal winner in the American Pale Ale category, this crisp and fragrant beer is hopped and dry-hopped with plenty of Amarillos and Cascades. Try it with any bold, flavorful food to complement its citrusy, resinous spiciness.

Beautiful rich amber with a nice little white head that sticks around. Cloudy with an almost ruby twinge, like tree sap.

Smells crisp and bright. Lemon and green apple, actually, a tart sweetness. Some grass, too, perhaps?

The taste gives up some amber waves of grain, some of that tart lemony bitterness, zesty and... tart is really the word for it. There's an underlying piercing sweetness that seems to draw from the tartness, before giving a bit of a honey on the finish. Decent body, a little bubbly for my preference, but appropriate. The aftertaste is the standard citrusy bitter. As it warms up a bit, it becomes more traditionally bitter, though more of an IPA than an APA. The bitterness is sharp, pine and citrus rind.
All in all it's an interesting and enjoyable drink, though I prefer my pale's a little less tart and a little more... bitter, I guess. Almost gives the impression of a tart blonde. The taste is the weakest link here for me, though it's not unenjoyable by any means. Glad I got to try it, though I don't anticipate reaching for it again in the near future.

Can poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewery pint glass

A: Pours golden amber with a frothy pale khaki head that slowly settles to a firm layer and leaves plenty of thick lacing.

S: Grassy, floral, a bit earthy, slightly spicy herbal notes, a little citrus, grainy, slightly toasty bready malt, and a touch of caramel sweetness.

T: Floral, grassy, earthy herbal slightly spicy tones, resinous pine, citrus, grapefruit and orange, hints of stone fruit, strong malt backbone, a bit grainy, plenty of slightly toasty bready malt, and a little caramel sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation.

O: You can tell this is a legacy beer; classic American hops and a big time malty backbone. I wish I liked it more, but it's meh at best for me. This can came in a variety pack. If I put them all in a cooler I'd definitely grab something different for my next round.

Clear golden colored body with a thick, rocky, sticky head; webs of lacing along the glass. Pungent, spicy aroma; mildly sweet with a slight caramel edge. Mild toasted grain base with a sparkly light sweetness; well-balanced hop bitterness cutting the sweetness. Medium body; crisp and prickly on the palate; mainly dry mouthfeel overall.

A rock solid APA, crisp and clean with well-integrated malt sweetness and heft and nice hop bitterness and gentle bite.

6/29/18...pours copper gold, see through w/ white foam. Very faint nose of sharp citrus. Malt mellows and dances between a pale and an IPA. Bitter sticks around though. Nice beer.

Pours a hazy pale amber swarming with dust-like particulates. The pour produces 4+ fingers of billowy, fine bubbled frothy, lasting, beige head that recedes to a clumpy, off-center mound-like surface cap & small collar, leaving sticky Jack Frost webs on the sides of the glass. Aroma is a volatile ester mixture of citrus, sweet malt, dough & caramel apple notes with subdued earth & pine. Taste is semi-sweet caramel malt, dough, apple & faint honey with a thin hop profile, composed of mostly spice, earthy floral/herbal notes backed by citrus & pine. Finishes peppery & bitter but grainy & semi-dry with a vegetal hint that lingers into an aftertaste that is bitter & lightly astringent. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation, a little grainy & prickly, dry in the aftertaste.
