Notes/Commercial Description:
Howling Wolf Weisse Bier is an unfiltered Bavarian-style Hefeweizen. Brewed with a hearty amount of wheat, this Weissbier pours a light clouded golden color with a generous head. Gently hopped to balance the malt sweetness, Howling Wolf’s flavors and aromas are subtle with a hint of fruit and spice. At 5% alcohol by volume, this light-bodied ale is a refreshing session beer for any time of year.

Scored this at MacaDoodles in Joplin. MO.

Pours a hazed honey color with4 fingers of ivory colored head. Looks great in my Schneider Weisse glass! Superior lacing & good head retention

S: Cloves & breadyness in abundance, Banana peels once warm

T: Follows the nose, peppery & lemony hop notes as well up front. Dryness, breadyness, cloves, green banana & juicy fruit as this warms. Finishes bready, dry with a slight mineral edge, plus more cloves

MF: Medium bodied & creamy

Drinks extremely easy, as good as any German Hefe I've had. Highly recommended!

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy dark yellow with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet musty malts with bananas and cloves and some acidity and citric fruits.

The flavor is sweet malts with a little citric fruit and some earthy yeast and an acidic dry finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a solid unfiltered wheat.

Thanks to ericandersnavy for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a hazy light yellow color with a white head. The aroma is wheat, grain and bananas, about what I expect in the hefeweizen. The flavor is more of the same. I get a lot of wheat and banana notes with some clove mixed in. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. This tastes and smells like a hefeweizen should, but something about it doesn't sit that well with me. Decent, but not one of the better Grand Teton beers I have had.

A- Pale golden, almost honey-colored with very thin head and even thinner tracing

S- Slight fruity aroma with a hint of hay/wheat

T- Not as wheaty as some weisse-style beers, slight fruitiness along with the smell, a little hoppy bite at the end, overall very pleasant

M- very light on the mouth with some carbonation, very enjoyable

O- Very tasty and palatable. One of the nest wheat beers I've had in a while, nothing offencive about it, if it is a little uninspired at times.

Serving type: bottle poured into an imperial pint glass

Mirky but not too mirky (unfiltered) pale golden straw color with a 1-2 cm bubbly white head. Low retention and lacing.

Nice sweet banana notes on the nose immediately with light sweet and an underlining semi sour note.

Flavor is nice, clean and fresh. Nice wheat body surrounded by notes of citrus and banana.

Light bodied mouthfeel, fresh yet slightly dry with med-high carbonation.

Overall it's a very nice weisse bier. Light, fresh with nice notes and flavor. Not the best I've ever had but yet another beer I really like from Grand Teton. Nice balance and high drinkability. I recommend this well made weisse bier.

Bottled on date of 01/17/13

Appearance - Pours a cloudy golden orange with an off-white finger width head. Fair retention, resulting in a broken layer of microbubbles across the surface. Spotty lacing with little stick.

Smell - Moderate aroma consisting mainly of banana and bubblegum. Faint traces of clove and a bit of wheat.

Taste - Predominant bubblegum character upfront with moderate banana flavor backing it up. Clove spice is there, but plays a minor role. Faint citrus and wheat can be found near the back end before a nice, balanced finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium body with moderate, soft carbonation. Smooth, easy finish.

Overall - Another American brewery doing the style some justice; this is a fine example of a true hefeweizen. While the flavors aren't quite as assertive as I'd like, the profile shows excellent balance, resulting in a very drinkable brew. If I were in the mood for a hefe, and Kellerweis or a few of the German beers weren't available, this would be my choice.

A: Sunshine yellow and hazy with a medium, fairly quickly dissipating head--eventually settling in a thin film; bubbly carbonation pops through the film; lacing is minimal

S: Very grainy with just subtle banana and lemon--smells more like an American wheat with the grains and wheat taking dominance over any yeasty quality

T: Lots of lemon and grains but none of the typical banana and clove characteristics of a weiss beer; a bit tart--nice lemon zest and really grainy and grassy but it's just not quite right]

F: Medium body with decent carbonation

O: Not what I want or expect in a weiss beer--more typical to an American wheat; it is refreshing and pleasant enough for what it is, however

Poured a finger and half of head on a cloudy medium straw colored body.
The aroma is banana and apricot. Nice.
The taste has some banana, mild sweetness and a chalky mild bitterness. It ran a little watery at the end.
The texture is fizzy and light with moderate carbonation.
This is a good hefe.

From tasting notes 9-17-11
Poured into a snifter

Appearance: Cloudy golden pour with a 1-finger head that settles very quickly and has poor retention and leaves virtually no lacing.

Smell: A nice waft of wheat and yeast hit the nose. This beer smells crisp with a hint of spice and citrus as well.

Taste: Plenty of wheat up front, some pine, and a bit of a citrusy taste as well. The finish is crisp and dry.

Mouthfeel: Thin bodied but not watery, medium carbonation, and a crisp, refreshing finish.

Overall: A pretty decent wheat beer that suits the palate and is nice and refreshing.

Picked up a couple of these tonight at the COOP... shared one with inflatablechair.... We both thought this is a pretty damn respectable and very fresh tasting hefe.

Why this is named "Howling Wolf" when the Cellar Reserve Weizenbock already had the moniker first is very confusing. I bet it will only be a few weeks before we start seeing reviews under the Weizenbock that actually should be in the hefe category... oh well... I don't care... this is a classy brew.

1" foamy white head... great retention and lacing.. the brew is hazed golden.

Nose is very fresh of course... balanced nicely between the esters and the phenols... although both seem a tad light... banana and clove play nicely but are not quite as heavy as I would hope for... but that is my PNW mindset playing games.

Not much to say about the flavor that I haven't already said... the banana begins up front and the clove sorta finishes out.. the palate is better than the aroma by quite a bit in my mind...

Medium/lite body seems spot on... carbonation is also about perfect..

Nothing is wrong with this beer... damn good actually.

I forget how refreshing a well made hefeweizen can be.. I will definitely be picking these up while I can.

Poured from bottle to pokal: Hazy golden pear with a wispy white head that fades out to a nice ring. The nose is very yeasty, crisp, sweet banana bread. Fresh smelling. I wish this bottle was fresher, but I can still get a good sense of what it once was - banana, clove, a little bubble gum. Easy drinking.
