In Berliner Weisse we think we’ve found the perfect style for our summer Cellar Reserve. This north German wheat beer is traditionally brewed and released very fresh. It has a light body from the wheat and refreshingly tart acidity that make it a perfect summer thirst-quencher. Its lemony tartness is provided by a secondary fermentation with lactobacillus, the same microorganism that’s responsible for yogurt’s tang. That tartness increases and improves with age, so the people of Berlin are known to buy extra bottles to bury in their gardens for two years or more.

As usual with our Cellar Reserves, we’ve taken a traditional style and added our own twist. In this case we’ve tripled the strength over the traditional beer, which should only increase its aging potential. For the primary fermentation we used a traditional Bavarian hefeweizen yeast that produces soft notes of banana and clove. We followed that with lactobacillus and six months in conditioning to create a complex fruity acidity that compliments the soft sweet malt tones and a unique ale that is both fulfilling and refreshing.

750ml bottle. Pours a hazy golden yellow with a small fine white head that goes to a thin film and leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is wheaty malts and sour almost rotten tropical fruits and bananas with a little stinkiness.

The flavor is sweet sugary fruity malts and bananas with a little acidic tartness. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, too sweet with not much sourness. Crabtree's version is much better.

25.4oz brown bottle, freshness date on the label and vintage year on the neck.

LOOK: Slightly cloudy, gold color, sufficient lacing

SMELL: Bready, mild tartness, doughy biscuits, grassy, yeast, soft, taffy, banana peel, phenolic

TASTE: Mild tartness, fresh pears, green banana, peppery, crackers, grassy, yeast, mild phenols, gummy, walnut skin, foral, alcohol, dry grain finish

Not as tart as expected, just enough perhaps. I know this is an amped up version though it could have been labeled as a helles weizenbock and we'd all have a different mindset here. Not a huge problem with me though, just hoped to have my palate puckered.

The beer pours a golden-yellow color with a white head. The aroma is full of peaches and wheat, with some light tartness. The flavor is very similar. There is quite a bit of fruit - mainly peaches and lemons - as well as some wheat. There is a good bit of flavor, but the tartness level is very light. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A: Hazy amber with a champagne like white foam cap that quickly fills the glass and then drops to a thick fizzy film.
S: Light horseblanket and lemony tartness, light bread.
T: Lemony tart light fruit, white bread. F: Very effervescent, refreshing and light.
O: This has twice the alcohol of a traditional Berliner Weiss but it is ery refreshing.

Hazed light golden and yellow with a thin white head that leaves spots and irregular webs of lace down the glass. Pretty and appropriate for the style.

The aroma is a combination of lemon and wheat with some definite acidity and sour notes. Though there is also a bit of alcohol heat sprinting from the glass, which seems absurd for the style...but then again, this one has 7+ percent ABV. What the...?

The flavor is definitely acidic and sour with some lemon and wheat, but the syrupy mouthfeel and overall fruity sweetness is more than distracting. This is incredibly sweet--not a hallmark of the style.

Thick, syrupy, and heavy. Not good for the style. Not good, ever. Cloying, sticky, thick: not words I ever want to associate with a berliner.

A radical departure from one of my favorite styles. I will not have this again.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass. Bottled on 5/23/14.

Appearance: Pours a very cloudy yellowish golden orange with a lot of rising bubbles. About one finger of white head that fades into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A funky, tart, and fruity wheat forward aroma with hints of spice and citrus. Wheat and pale malt with hints of straw, grains, cracker, yeast, and caramel. Big hints of the lacto funk. Spice hints of coriander, clove, and pepper. Good fruit presence with zesty hints of lemon, orange, banana, and pear. A pretty decent Hefeweizen like aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a tart, funky, and sweet wheat driven taste with notes of fruit and spice. Wheat and pale malt with some bready notes of grains, straw, cracker, Hefeweizen yeast, and caramel. Spice notes of coriander, pepper, and clove. Big presence of lactobacillus funk. Fruit notes of lemon zest, banana, orange, green apple, and pear. A pretty solid wheat taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a somewhat high level of carbonation. Tart, sweet, prickly, and pretty smooth.

Overall: A pretty nice spin on the Berliner Weisse style. Good mix of funk and spices with some zesty fruit esters.

Had this at the Reno Whole Foods tap room. Poured out, light yellow, mega hazy, pristine virgin like white head on it, about .67" in height. Aroma, whoa, too much perfume, clove and otherwise what seemed like belgian yeast moreso than a German hefe. Good German berlinner's don't smell like this, why should this one?

Taste, jeez, same thing, the mild tartness and wheat is overcome by clove, banana and just a general perfume like taste to the beer. The alcohol is way too high for style, and the taste buds too. This beer needs more tartness, sourness, more of a grist wheat mouthfeel, the correct yeast strain, no clove, no banana, some lemon, just not that heavy yeast presence, less alcohol.

For me, this was an abomination of one of my favorite styles.

Pours clear, light amber with a small head.
The aroma is an unappealing mix of yeast, citrus, bready malts and funk.
Flavor: mildly tart with a mostly lemony citrus tone. Some bready light grains.

O: get past the aroma and you'll find a quite drinkable weisse beer with well hidden ABV.

A heavily clouded pale gold color, this beer grows a moderately sized and extremely fluffy pure white head. Retention is pretty good, and the lacing is in the same moderation as the head itself in quantity and heaviness.
There's all kinds of everything going on in this aroma, and it's a little confusing. It wants to come together, but doesn't quite manage cohesion. I do get the notes I want, with tartness, funk and some sour fruits, but the phenols, light bitterness, grass/hay and bready malts complementing it add confusion rather than working together.
The flavor offer much of the same, and the boozy heat adds another element of confusion even as some of the aroma's confusion eases off. Lots of yeast, earth, tartness, sourness, funk, fruits, dryness and sweetness competing; it's interesting for sure. Ultimately, it's actually pretty good, just difficult to put together.
The feel moves back and forth between tangy/leafy dryness and fruity sorts of sweetness, but it's got the light sting on the tongue that doesn't hit too hard. The odd booziness gets to the mouthfeel just a little, but it's this beer's best aspect.

Poor execution. I would expect more of a sourness and lower abv from the style. Yeasty and some sour fruit aroma. Cloudy deep yellow. Boozy. Only a little tartness, should be fruity sourness or significant lactic. So-so drinkability.Medium mouthfeel.

Picked this up at Bubbles in Gladstone, MO. Can't really read this Bottled on date..

Pours a hazed honey color with a thumb of beige colored head. Some head retention & lacing

S: Cloves, breadyness, lemon

T: Follows the nose, some white grape, dryness, crackery notes, slight twang to this as well up front. Cloves mix with lemon & a little lemon zest as this warms, slight phenolic notes plus pears as this warms. Finishes tart with lemony & white grape juice notes & some grapefruit

MF: Light/medium bodied, slight carbonation

More of an Imperial Berliner Weisse, but super drinkability none the less. A little more sourness would've went a long way, but I did enjoy this one. Better than this composite score

Steve Kim warned me not to... But I did it anyways. Served from tap into a flared pilsner. Poured a golden yellow-orange with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, subtle fruit, floral, and wheat. The flavor was of sweet malt, earth, fruit, banana, floral, and apple cider. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty average brew. When it arrived I thought Steve didn't know what he was talking about as it looked pretty close to your average Berliner. However, once I smelled it, I knew what he was on about. There was a HUGE earthy note going on here that make me pull back from it at first before I could inhale deeply. This kind of surprised me if I am honest. This disapated as the glass was consumed thankfully as it would have definitely gotten much lower marks. The flavor had a lot going on, but it was by no means above and average Berliner. I have had quite a few great Berliners and this one was definitely not one. Not sure if a fruit addition could help this one as there just seemed to be a lot missing that I really enjoy in a good Berliner. Glad I got to try it on tap and didn't have to buy a bottle.

An Imperial Berliner Weisse. We will imperialize anything. Poured from 750ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy golden color with a large head that settled quickly to a thin cap. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left down the glass.

Pick up a lot of lemon in the aroma along with wheat. Hints of grass and bread dough.

Not really acidic or tart at this point. More of weizenbock with lemon. Strong wheat flavor and some fruit esters. A little alcohol warmth and flavor in the finish.

Large body with gentle, smooth carbonation. Neither of which I think of as being a Berliner Weissbier. But for a big beer, the texture is very good.

Not sure if it is worth picking up another bottle and aging for a couple years and hope the acidity grows. Right now it is just a better than average weizenbock.

Murky pale orange, not quite a pastel yellow shade as is usual for a Berliner. A solid cap of white foam that settles quickly to a ring around the edge. A wispy crescent shape floats in the center.

Familiar soft weizen traits in the aroma, fruity esters, supple wheat and cider notes. As this was just released and still very fresh, it doesn't come across as sour yet.

A nice tart peach twang against a mellow wheat backdrop, some dusty sweetness in the aftertaste momentarily. Pretty fruit forward with peach, pear, and citrus elements. It tastes good, just not what you'd expect for a Berliner Weisse really. Seems "green".

Seems like it could use more time to let the lacto take hold and dry it out more. It's medium bodied, and a little slick, not yet crisp and tart as would be expected. Carbonation isn't quite as charged as a traditional Berliner Weisse typically is. Nevertheless it's pretty enjoyable, and seemingly has some cellar potential.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass, first 2012 release of this in bottles. Beer pours a cloudy orange color with a finger of fluffy bright white head. Head retention is nice, lasting several minutes before dissipated to a thin collar of foam and some light lacing. Plenty of fine carbonation streaming up from the bottom of the glass.

Nose is dominated by fruity esters, red apple and pear, light coriander and clove, and biscuit malt. Not much if any lactic presence, maybe a hint of lemon tartness.

Taking a sip, somewhat disappointed with the lack of tartness. Sweet fruity ester and yeast flavors greet the tongue, apple and pear, coriander. Biscuit malt and light wheat grain flavor mid tongue before finishing clean with some light yeast ester lingering.

Light to medium body and well carbonated, beer is more of a tripel than a berliner weissbier.

12oz bottle picked up at the COOP... Pours a pretty hazy dark yellow... no real head to speak of and no lacing.

Nose shows some very light yogurt qualities (that may just be in my head)... but the big player is wheaty pale malt and some yeasty phenols that remind me of clove.

Flavor is a sweet mess of fruity pear and apple esters that belong no where in the same breath of anything Berliner. xx

Body is entirely too thick... This brew is pretty much a disaster IMO.

Pours a hazy yellow-orange with a very dense white head that settles to a 1/2 inch cap. Nice lactic aromas of yogurt, lemon zest, and cracked grains. Not incredibly tart smelling, but pleasant and approachable. Taste is light, with a lemon yogurt flavor that makes up most of the profile. Touch of tartness, touch of grain, but nothing new in the Berliner world. Mouthfeel is light and crisp, with a medium body and ample carbonation. Overall a decent enough Berliner, but far from my favorite example of the style.

A: pours a pale and cloudy yellow with a small white head and minimal retention
S: smells of banana, clove and some wheat malt. more heffe than anything
T: slightly tart with wheat malt flavor, banana and clove. slight sour citrus but not quite enough. swallow is clean with lingering wheat flavor and some clove
M: smooth and creamy in the mouth from the wheat, ample yet soft carbonation from bottle conditioning.
O: lacking in tartness but a very tasty heffe. some more time might help the tartness in this beer pick up so I'll grab another one and revisit this one later. more tartness in the smell and taste would make this beer an easy four.

750ml into a Hopleaf tulip.

A: Pours a glowing gold with a big, white, rocky head.

S: Wheat, musty yeast, stone fruit and banana esters, slight lemon.

T: Big wheat and dry, fruity esters - banana, peach, apple. Slight booze under a grainy pale malt base. Crisp with a peppery bitterness, a bit lemony with a barely perceptible dry acidity.

M: Lively carbonation, light-bodied.

O: Seems more like a strong hefeweizen at this strength, with almost no lacto tartness detectable. Not bad, but not what it should be.

Poured into a perfect pint. 2012 vintage.

3.5 A: Moderately hazed dark yellow color. Two fingers of frothy/fizzy white head that falls quickly and leaves just a few whisps of lacing.

3.0 S: It doesn't smell bad, but it's missing many of the things I love about the style. Foremost, it isn't tart in the nose at all. It smells more like an APWA. Secondarily, it's got a lot of bready yeastiness which prevents it from smelling refreshing if that makes sense. Peppery spiciness, surprisingly potent wheat, and bready yeastiness.

3.0 T: Like the nose, the taste is muddled by yeast. There's a bit of funk, but again lacking tartness. Spicy peppery yeastiness, breadiness, and wheat. Again it tastes like an APWA.

3.0 M: Medium body. Not light and refreshing, which is something I like about the style. Rather, it's dense and chewy. I can't ding it too much though as it goes down easy enough.

2.5 D: They need to rethink this beer or stop calling it a BW. It's not bad (it's not good either), but it's not what I wanted.

“Bottled on 03/2012”

Pours a hazy shade of bronze with a huge fluffy white head. The best description I can give of the smell is that it is like a hefeweizen with some added hops and faint lactic acid.
Whoa, mouthfeel is on the heavy side, with none of the spritzy carbonation typical for the style.
Surprisingly sweet, with a little caramel maltiness and some yeast flavors – apple, banana and maybe lemon if you’re really stretching things. Very little of the tartness described on the attached label. Too sweet. Closer to a weizenbock than a Berliner.

Overall: an okay beer but a complete failure of a berlinerweisse (imperial or otherwise). I’ve enjoyed most of the Grand Teton beers I’ve tried in the past, but this is an exception (although rather fitting for a beer named after a badger). Maybe if it is aged long enough, it will dry out and develop some berliner attributes.

Poured into an IPA glass????

A faded orangish body holds up a ... no, there is no head! Or lacing. The aroma is very tart with Granny Smith apples coming to mind. Also hints of banana and clove. The taste is pretty tart as well. You have to really try hard to pick out the malt from all of the tartness. The mouthfeel is slightly acidic!

Overall, pretty tart. Too much in fact.

Semi clear golden color light fizzy head

Nose weird fruity, apple like, weird tree fruit, sour,

Taste little yeasty, doughy, big weird fruity again, apple, sour apple and tree fruit, slight tart like strong Belgian thing, flemmy but not acidic.

Med bod little flemmy sticky, decent carb

Nothing like I expected, not much like a berliner at all.

Had at a recent bottle share.

Slightly hazy golden-yellow pour, with a large, fizzy, white head that receded to a thin layer of bubbles, leaving some dissipating lacing on the glass. Quite wheaty in the nose, lemongrass, yeast. in the taste, lightly toasted wheat, grass, yeasty sourdough, light touches of lemon and under-ripe banana. Not amazingly flavorful or distinctive, but still pretty crisp and refreshing. Light-medium and fairly enjoyable, but I wouldn't exactly call it exemplary of the style. However, on drinkability alone, I wouldn't mind revisiting this one, preferably on a hot summer day.
