Dark brown with amber hue and med to low carbonation. Strong smells of bourbon and vanilla. Taste is very similar with strong bourbon & vanilla flavor with notes of caramel, toffee, and oak. Overall this is definitely a brew for lovers of bourbon forward beers which I am. Possibly my favorite anniversary beer from Karl Strauss to date.

2/17/14 NOTE: Tried it from the bottle after this review of the draft. Beer is definitely not as good. Buttery smell & similar buttery flavor quality as well.

As a novice fan of dopplebock's I was unsure of what to expect of a bock steeped in a bourbon barrel. The result was stellar. It holds the sweetness of a bock but adds a distinct bourbon flavour which lingers long on the palate. If your looking for subtle taste, you won't find it here. Instead, you'll begin your sip with the sweet bock before the bourbon smashes its way through to fill your tastebuds. This is a definite sipper due to the lingering flavour and the high ABV. If you like to change it up this is a bock-twist worth trying.

poured on tap in a pint glass at wonderland ocean pub in san diego

A: the color i can most closely resemble this to was the coat of a chocolate labrador. thats not a knock at all either haha. it was a great dark brown with dark chocolate hue and a lightly golden tinge. about a quarter inch of head that dissipated within 5 minutes.

S: the smell for me was a very sweet bourbon barrel, almost like the bottom of a glass of jim beam and cola. light sugary fructose smell follows a shallow whiskey smell.

T:the taste to me was pretty sweet up front and lingered with a almost caramalized apple pie with a swig of bourbon flavor. as far as the barrel aged beers ive had, it was the sweetest of them.

M: Smooth texture with a lingering heaviness on the back of the tongue.

O:really quite enjoyed this beer. i would def order it again and it was the finest karl strauss beer ive had so far

Thanks to Oneinchaway for sharing this one at Retsinis' tasting.

Pours a hazy reddish-brown with a foamy beige head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, toffee, fruit, and slight bourbon aromas. Taste is much the same with earth, caramel, and toffee flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer that is decent but the barrel aging on this one is very subdued and boring in my opinion.

A - Very dark pour into a tulip glass at Toronado. One finger head that had nice retention.

S - Oak, bourbon, caramel, toffee

T - Heavy alcohol burn for the ABV. Bourbon and vanilla up front followed by the sting of alcohol, then mellows out to a sweet, caramel ick. Maybe this brew needs to be aged but it was very sweet.

M - Burning sensation on my tongue

O- Pretty disappointed, might be one of the worst barrel aged beers I've ever had. Maybe I'll try to find one and age it, but at the $20 per bottle, I'll probably just skip it all together.
