Poured from a draft into a pint glass at Karl Strauss Brewery in La Jolla, Calif. Color was black. About one finger of head. Bubbly cloudy lacing. Healthy amount of film that was evenly spread out on the glass.

Smelled of toffee and chocolate malts.

Tasted similar to the nose with chocolate and toffee malts leading the way. Also some caramel in there. Good tasting beer.

Medium body. Creamy slick texture. Average carbonation Smooth finish.

I really liked this beer. It was smooth from the get-go and was perfect for my mood.

Had on tap at the Karl Strauss in downtown San Diego.

Beer pours a nice dark black color with the slightest bit of tan head, but not much.

Very little in the nose. Maybe a bit of roasty and malt, but not much.

Beer tastes of roasty coffee, including just the slightest bit of smokiness. Finishes very dry and refreshing.

Very thin and easy drinking mouthfeel.

Good black lager.

Another oldie is back. On tap at KS in La Jolla and listed at 4.9% ABV. Pleasing watery mouthful with a zing of carbonation. Moderate amount of dark roast malt and just a hint of charred flavors. Dark in the pint glass with a ruby glint. Modest head. A little malty body but more of a big lager sensation. Lots of flavor for a lower-alcohol beer. Sort of a flat Coke taste, but in a nice way.

A lighter kind of dark. Highly thirst quenching.

Pint at the Karl Strauss in Costa Mesa a couple nights ago, reviewed from notes

A-Very dark brown color, small 1/2 inch creamy light tan head, stuck around for a good amount of time, nice retention, some lacing
S-Roasted malts, hint of smokiness, mild dark chocolate, lactic acid, some skunkiness, burned grains, and wheat
T-Starts off pretty roasty with some chewiness as well from dark malts, acidic in the middle, finish is a little dry but light, nicely balanced and goes down easy, just gets a little tiresome because it is not very complex
M-Acidic, chewy, and roasty mouthfeel, needs more carbonation, medium bodied, taste did not linger long like Death and Taxes or other beers of its style
D-Easy to drink for its color, still a little heavy, alcohol is low below five percent and it tastes like it, pretty smooth overall

One of the special release taps that night, supposedly an August seasonal, not a bad dark lager and went well with a burger, other than that probably would not drink again, might be worth trying

On-tap at Karl Strauss Costa Mesa,

A: Pours black with a light off-tan head, good retention, light lacing.

S: Light dark malt, some acidity, chocolate.

T: Defintely has a roastiness and smoke character right off the bat, not unlike Craftsman Smoked Lager. Clear acidity brings some light chocolate and mocha coffee through as well. Not the biggest fan of the acidic portion of the beer, but it worked better than I thought it would at the start.

M: Mildly acidic, light carbonation, light on the tongue, easy to drink.

D: A nice light black lager, not up to par with something like Black Bavarian, but in its style it is solid.

On tap at their Costa Mesa location.
Dark caramel colored stout with a nice lacy tan head that melts to a sticky ring of lacing.
Aroma of dark malts, coffee and fresh tobacco.
A very creamy mouthfeel.
Taste is mostly light coffee with a hint of dark chocolate overlying the dark caramel malt.
Pleasant easy afternoon drinker.
