Pours orange-brown with a small, off-white head. Fruity aroma. Grapes, plums, and a nice earthy malt. Strong caramel malt taste along with the same white grape flavor. Good hop backbone that blends well with an oak flavor. Its a good Karl Straus product, but only an average barleywine.

Pint from the Karl Strauss location in Costa Mesa for four dollars and some change

Color was a deep brown mahogany with a red tint when held up to the light, there was a 1/2 inch off white head that did not go anywhere for a couple minutes, good retention and also some nice lacing

Smell had lots of malt, some toffee and caramel and some dark fruits as well, lots of hoppiness in the aroma also, smelled a little like a red wine at times, definitely perfumey

Taste was pretty hoppy at first with both pine and citrus characteristics, particularly sweet oranges and tangerines that gave this beer a unique tartness, some of the hops were nice and bitter like I enjoy them, left a dry finish, once the beer settled down, I began tasting other fruity and sweet flavors, got some kind of berries and caramel as it got warmer, by the end I was tasting lots of toffee and an interesting mixture of fruits, not a bad barleywine overall

Body was not as thick as one would hope, good level of carbonation, tasted stuck around for a minute or so, nice spicy and hoppy mouthfeel

Could drink a couple pints of this before the high ABV started affecting me, smooth for a barleywine, pretty heavy on the stomach though, especially as it warms and becomes more sweet

One of the better beers I have had from Karl Strauss, sounded like this beer was only available at this location unfortunately during the winter months, that makes sense looking at its name, would drink again if in the area, recommended
