Another consistant brew from Karl Strauss, goes well with many of the items on their list (I had it with the lamb sliders).
A: Cloudy amber ochre with a red/orange hue.
S: Malty caramel, with subtle spice.
T: Caramel, Toffee, and Orange peel mingle with the coriander-esque spices. Also hints of raisin.
M: On the syrpy side, fairly carbonated.
D: Great beer with any meal.
For the style this beer is average all across the board, and that is not a bad thing, becuase this is a great style, and it is nice to have a consistant representation. If I was at a bar that served all brands of beer, I would not choose KS for their Saison, but if you would like a basic crash course into the style, then by all means enjoy, and let it be your gateway brew!
BTW, I highly recommend "To the 9's" by strauss. It is not on the menu, but they do have 22oz bottles that you can order at the restaurant, or if you act fast you can grab one at a good liqour store near you.

Poured hazy yellow-gold with a bubbly white head. Light lacing. Fresh floral nose with straw, apples, clove, and grass. Bubbly mouthfeel, kind of sharp. More bitter than expected for a saison; peppery and hoppy. Some lemon zest with a strong wheat/straw taste. A welcome funkiness in the finish. Not bad.

Visited the Karl Strauss Brewpub with my wife after diving in La Jolla Cove. The Saison is their seasonal brew ,they seemed to be pushing it pretty hard. Being that Saison is one of my favorite styles it was not a hard sell for me. It poured much darker that your typical saison and was not as unfiltered as I would have liked. I think the ABV is 7%, it wasn't overpowering. There was a certain taste to it that I couldn't identify, it was a good brew overall. Nothing extreme, just well done.

Poured from a growler into a paper cup (sadly).
Pours a medium- to dark-brown color, clear with light to medium carbonation and solid off-white/light tan head that lingers for a bit. Darker than the usual saison, and more malty in aroma, but still the farmhouse yeast is present. Taste is quite malty (like a lighter stout), but still has some spices and funky yeast flavors. Medium-bodied and quite drinkable in both flavor and alcohol. Really not quite a saison, but nonetheless one of the better offerings from Karl Strauss.
