A - Poured a mahogany color with an off white head that leaves lacing behind

S - Is of grapefruity citrus hops and rye spices

T - Just like the nose with grapefruit citrus hops with a spicy rye finish

M - This beer has a medium body with medium carbonation to it

D - This is probably one of the best rye and Karl Strauss beers that I've had in a while worth grabbing a pint of if its on tap

Pours a deep orange-ish amber. An inch or two of off-white foam.

Smells very good. Strongly of grapefruit, pine, ... rye ??? ... something interestingly spicy/malty anyway. Wow. Karl Strauss has really started to turn out some decent offerings.

Nice solid IPA. Sweet rye malt, a spicy, almost bready malt undercurrent, strong bitter grapefruit an da bit of background pine.

Good. Very drinkable.

Consumed at Universal City Walk on 6/6/10
Served in a tulip

A: This beer pours a ruddy, cloudy amber color with a one finger of off white head. Head recedes at a moderate pace leaving sheets of lacing on the glass.

S: Nose is massive amounts of grapefruit, citrus hops, hints of spice and light caramel malt notes.

T: Taste is far more mild and smooth than the nose would indicate. Still a major grapefruit hop bite but rather nicely blended in to a solid caramel malt flavoring. Finish has a bit of spiciness to it with a bitterness that really hangs on the tongue.

M: Medium body, medium carbonation, crisp up front with an oily and bone dry finish.

D: Goes down easily, very tasty, nicely balanced, this is a solid beer to drink for a bit.

Consumed 12/14/08 at Karl Strauss Universal CityWalk, Universal City, CA.

Listed on the menu as 7.0% ABV.

Clear, coppery/honey hued beer. Lots of carbonation streaming up the sides of the tulip glass to a thin, uniform white head.

Smells of grapefruit hops and sweet malt. Aroma is somewhat marred by skunky, soapy notes.

Flavor is piney hop forward and somewhat caramel sweet. A little peppery. Mildly bitter on finish. Not much rye to be tasted here. A little bigger than your average IPA in flavor without making it into the realms of DIPAs.

Slightly dry and astringent in a good way.

Took me a while to finish this one. I guess it falls into the "good but not great" category.

Tap Downtown. Pours copper with a thick white head. Heavy rye aroma with some grapefruit and pine. Toasted rye bread and grapefruit in the taste, kind of harsh. The rye dominates and sours the beer. Sweet caramel and citrus finish. Different, but not really that good.

On tap at the Karl Strauss Brew Pub in La Jolla, CA. 13oz glass.

Poured a medium and hazy amber color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of rye, some spiciness, and citrus. Tastes of the same spicy rye bread with a grapefruit bitter finish. Body a little on the thinner side. Dry and clean finish. Actually, not that bad of a Rye or IPA.
