12oz bottle (no date) poured into a tumbler glass.

Appearance: Hazy copper-amber color. Thin off white head. Good strands and dots of persistent lacing.

Smell: Grapefruit citrus and pine almost solely, but not a strong aroma.

Taste: Very hoppy. Pine, grapefruit dominate. Barest hint of malt balance in here but predominately bitter with a lingering bitter hop finish at the end. Good for an AIPA.

Mouthfeel: Lots of hop resin sticking to the teeth on this tone, but with enough carbonation to pull it off the teeth later.

Overall / Drinkability: Very typical west coast AIPA. A good beer, quite drinkable.

Pours with a thick finger of good cream colored head that displays decent retention and lacing. Amber in color. Smells of a nice subdued hoppiness with mostly floral and pine along with a definite malt presence. Tastes mostly of piney and resiny hops with a bit of flora. Plenty of malt balance, which works until the finish which is a bit too sweet. Medium in body with a high level of prickly carbonation. A few swirls of the glass can take the head from zero to an inch... too many bubbles. Overall this is a nice IPA for a brewpub, but can't really stand up to to San Diego's other microbreweries in the IPA arena.

Poured copper/amber into a 5oz sampling glass, with a finger of white head, and decent lacing. Smelled once again of maltiness, earthiness, and some caramel, with very little if any hop presence. Very similar to the Red Trolley Ale, and very disappointing for an 'American IPA' style. The taste simply confirmed the smell; nearly no citrus, woodiness, or bitterness to speak of...just maltiness and a little bit of leather. The mouthfeel though, like the Red Trolley I tried, was full-bodied, nicely carbonated, and pleasant. Definitely needs more hop flavor for me to session this 'American IPA'.

Karl Strauss Tower 10 IPA (tap)

Clear pale yellow with thin head and no retention. Light citrus aroma. Bright citrusy taste with moderate hoppy linger and a medicinal aftertaste. Very thin feel and a light bite.

Nice bright citrus flavor but that’s all that’s going on. No feel, no malt and a poor linger and aftertaste make this an avoidable beer.

Appearance: Cloudy gold with a huge head of foam and excellent lacing. Tons of carbonation. Way too much carbonation.

Smell: Grapefruit, caramel, pineapple, lemon.

Taste: Citrus, caramel, and grassy malts.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and creamy, with a bitter hop aftertaste.

The Verdict: Pretty good. It offers a huge aroma but the flavors are well balanced and muted. My only real complaint is the over carbonation- no matter how perfect the pour, half the glass was foam with each bottle.

Poured from a bottle; into a tumbler.
Appearance - gold, cloudy; thin, foamy head that leaves decent lacing.
Smell - pineapple and mango, faint juicy fruit.
Taste - not bad, but falls short of the nose, lacking with a strong pineapple and mango presence. A bit too boozy after it sits.
Feel - this goes from an enjoyable, drinkable IPA, to a weird after taste, funky IPA.
Overall - I'm in and out on this one...which means I'm out. Too funky when it's all said and done.

Second of two IPAs I had at the brewery restaurant in Sorrento Mesa (the first being the Double IPA). The better of the two, in my opinion.

Slightly darker than golden with little noticeable carbonation. It had no signs of haze, pouring crystal clear. Unfortunately, it was poured with no head and served too cold (just like the one before). After letting it warm a bit, there was more distinct citrus tones to the hopping, both in aroma and taste. Medium mouthfeel, it had a pleasant bitter finish. Would have been worth of a second, if I hadn't eaten so much.

Acquired as an extra in a trade, thanks WestCoastBrew2 for a great trade. This was poured into a 12oz Hop Leaf Tulip. Looks to be about 2 months fresh.

Appearance: Clear amber, 2 finger white head with moderate retention and lacing.

Smell: Fruity! Exploding with mango, pineapple, strawberry, orange, and grapefruit. Some pine as well.

Taste: Huge letdown after that nose! No fruity or piney hops at all. Pretty stale-tasting actually. No real hop flavor, some bitterness on the end, moderately malty. No alcohol taste present.

Mouthfeel: A bit over-carbonated. Otherwise average body with mildly dry finish.

Overall: If I was the brewer, I would pat myself on the back for the hop profile added late in the brew contributing to that nose. However, it's just a let-down on the taste. Needs some work, but could be a good IPA if the hop recipe was adjusted.

A- Pours a deep, cloudy orange hue with a 1.5 finger, frothy head that fades with quite a bit of lacing.

S- Very grainy, caramel, slight hints of grassiness.

T- Starts off very bready which leads into a wave of hops and a nice, crisp, bitter finish.

M- Medium bodied with plenty of carbonation.

D- A refreshing IPA. Doesn't stand out a whole lot but I would revisit.

Bottle: decent 355mL brown bottle. Pretty average craft label.

Appearance: a light, clear amber-gold colour with a thin, frothy head. Minimal retention and lacing.

Aroma: definite citrus and pine on the nose. Quite bitter hops - fairly mild aroma for n AIPA though.

Taste: at first I was a bit turned off due to the extremely bitter hops. The more I got into it, however, the better it was. A good blend of light malt, spices and that fair whack of hop bitterness. Not really a discernible flavour, but just bitter - standard AIPA stuff.

Aftertaste: the bitterness drops quite a bit, and is accompanied by a lovely caramel malt flavour.

Mouth feel: when I started drinking, I hadn't let the beer warm enough (it was approx 5 degrees), so it appeared there was to much carbonation. When it got to the correct temperature of approx 10 degrees, the body is light to moderate, and the carbonation is just enough to carry the flavour through.

Overall: this is a pretty good American IPA - plenty of flavour to go with the bittering hops - for a reasonable price of AU$60 a case (2013). After Red Trolley and Pintail Pale, I didn't think Karl Strauss would get one done - but this one does.
