Appearance is dark gold with a white head leaving nice lace.

Smell is a little caramel and citrus, didn't open up much.

Taste is earthy and stemmy hops, big bitterness. Some pine. A little nectarine peaks through the alpha acids, the sweetness a bit more prominent after my palate adjusts to the IBUs. Got some nice fresh hop resins as it warmed.

Mouthfeel is very oily, dry, medium bodied.

Drinkability is pretty good, a fiercely bitter IPA. I prefer more hop flavors though.

Karl Strauss Tower 10 IPA (tap)

Clear pale yellow with thin head and no retention. Light citrus aroma. Bright citrusy taste with moderate hoppy linger and a medicinal aftertaste. Very thin feel and a light bite.

Nice bright citrus flavor but that’s all that’s going on. No feel, no malt and a poor linger and aftertaste make this an avoidable beer.

On tap at Disneyland California Adventure park, served in a flourescent green plastic cup!

Appearance. Pours amber-orange with a finger and a half of creamy white head.

Smell. Big floral hops and a little toasty malts.

Taste. Big floral hops, some toasted grains, some citrus rinds.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with medium+ carbonation.

Overall. A nice ipa with some great floral hops.

Had on tap at LAX brewhouse, after a series of Utah beer drinking that left me wanting something with oomph

A: very thin creamy head; dark amber, relatively clear; streaks of lacing
S: very inviting hopped aroma; pine and grass
T: very solid, complex IPA; grass, hops, very bitter; not sweet ; mealy and enjoyable

Comes down as a solid, exemplary IPA; great brew!

On draft in San Diego.

A. Citrus hop assault with tons of tangerine notes

A. Light amber, brilliantly clear. One finger head with lacing persisting on the glass.

T. A firm bitterness underlies the citrus hop flavors. No harshness noted. No perceivable off-flavors to my palette. The malts are not very perceptible. This is a decidedly hop forward West Coast IPA.

M. Average carbonation for style. Dry finish.

O. A pleasant surprise on my trip to San Diego. This stood up well to the better known beers from Stone and Ballast Point I also had.

I travelled to San Diego for the first time since the 80's just last week, and upon learning of their growing craft brewery culture, I had to experience it once I was down there.

I had this on tap at the Karl Strauss brewery in Downtown SD and very much enjoyed it. It was very similar to other IPAs I've had over the years, and that's a good thing, as it featured all the aspects I like: it was clean, crisp, was nicely hopped but very flavourful as well.

If I were in the San Diego area I would look this one up again, definitely.

Served in a pint glass at Top of the Market San Diego.

A: Served a lovely, hazy honey color with 1/2 a finger of bright white foam on top. Retention was excellent and this sucker left an almost solid curtain of lace to coat the inside of the glass.

S: Mostly pine sap with a touch of caramel sweetness. Also picked up a bit of citrus rind.

T: Alot like above with some tangerine, childrens aspirin, and pine bough.

M: Loads of hop oils with a nice, tingly dryness that comes on pretty strong midway through. Astringent.

O: A very enjoyable, everyday AIPA. Looks like a fresh draft pour of this is the way to go.

Had this on tap at the San Diego airport waiting for my delayed flight to San Francisco. I had just spent a week in SD with some of my beer snob friends and one of them referred to Karl Strauss as the "Schlitz" of the San Diego beer scene. I didn't disagree with the statement because you do see Karl Strauss everywhere out here and the beers I've tried of theirs have not ben overly impressive.

However, with a selection of Blue Moon, Stella, and Bud Light to choose from I had to go for the KS Tower 10 IPA. And not a bad choice it was. I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. I had a 20oz. pour and the beer had a light amber color with a half-inch frothy head. Very clear with a good amount of bubbles flowing up. The smell was somewhat muted but had hints of pine and citrus just like you'd expect with this style. The taste was clean and quite hoppy, while smooth and nicely balanced. Not much bitterness but still had some depth and punch. I expected this to be a dull IPA lacking the spark and character you see in the best contenders in this field, but this beer holds its own quite admirably. Hoppy, clean, smooth, balanced - a very nice representation of this style. Also very fresh, which you might not expect in an airport bar.

I'd certainly have this beer again even if I was not stuck in an airport. Thank goodness the San Diego airport has a beer like this available to us weary travelers! While I would certainly take a Sculpin if available, this beer satisfied. Good job, Karl Strauss!

Pretty good IPA. I’m here for San Diego Beer Week and just had their special Heavy Pettie Double IPA which, according to claims is more bitter, but seems less. This beer was served in a pint shaker with a decent, fine, foamy, off white head that soon settled down and a lots of fine lace. Color is a clear amber. Aroma is hop, malt, resin, a little barn. caramel. Flavor’s much the same with more impact. Balance is heavy in favor of bitter, quite dry, and some good carbonic tang. Body & carbonation are good. Finish is like flavor and has long legs. If you get a chance go for the Heavy Pettie. This’ll do instead if ye caint.

Carlsbad, CA

Orange and amber with a moderately sized, somewhat persistent, off-white head that leaves lines of lacing down the glass.

A balanced aroma consisting of citrus, pine, floral notes, and a bready and biscuity backbone.

Moderate bitterness paired with a citrusy and piney hop bill. There's also a good amount of bready and toasted malt character as well. Well balanced and highly drinkable.

Medium bodied and amply carbonated.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this beer. I'd had the dry hopped version a few nights prior and was really disappointed with it. This, on the other hand, was a great example of an obviously popular style. Well done.

Ordered this at the San Diego International Airport a little over a week ago. Following review based on notes taken at that time.

Served in a 20oz. hefeweizen glass.

Appearance: Arrived with a half inch of fluffy, off-white head on top. The body was crystal clear and orange-gold in color. Decent head retention and lacing. Suits the style guidelines well.

Smell: Pineapple, caramel, and pine resin. Possibly some lime in there too - hard to say. Very simple and straightforward, mild as well.

Taste: Heavy pine and earth smack the pallet early, and cling deep into the aftertaste. Caramel malts add some mild sweetness, but this IPA is all about singular, heavy-handed bitterness. Very little complexity.

Mouthfeel: A bit lighter in body than your average IPA, and probably drier too. Prickly and somewhat resinous on the pallet, with a long, lingering, bitter aftertaste. Moderate carbonation.

Overall: A mediocre and forgettable IPA, but it worked out decently in this situation (waiting on a delayed flight in the airport).

On tap at the Karl Strauss truck at California Adventure/Disneyland. One of the best things about CAdventure.
Golden amber bubbly white head. Low to med. retention and lite lacing

Strong pine notes a bit floral, Grapefruit citrus and a hint of caramel. 

Caramel malty tones up front transitioning quickly to the hop character  supported by bold floral, pine and citrus notes. Fair to good balance. 

Medium bodied a strong bittering hop presence. High carb. 

Overall it's good IPA. Probably the best choice in the regular line of Karl Strauss beers. And definitely the best at CA Adventure which helps make this the happiest place on earth.

This is my favorite IPA. I tried this IPA in a six pack and thought it was exceptional. So I ordered a pony keg of it for my kegerator. Usually, after two or three weeks of drinking the same beer, you notice every flaw and fault, and eventually the great beers just become good. This IPA is the exception for my personal tastes. Three Ponies later and I'm still a huge fan because of it's unique balanced taste.

A: Copper-Blonde and clear. Heavy lacing and frothy head that remains.
S: Grapefruit, Citrus, bready, and floral. Hint of Honey-Suckle
T: Starts with Floral and finishes with Malty.
M: Moderately Hoppy bite but smooth finish.
O: In my opinion, a masterfully balanced IPA that hits several different notes to enjoy. Not your average heavy-handed IPA (even though i enjoy the heaviest hop-stupid treats now and then), more of a journey beer that keeps you in the clouds.

20 oz pour at San Diego airport.

First, I must say that I truly appreciate when airport bars serve local craft brews, it makes me extremely happy. Probably the most awesome example is the availability of New Glarus brews in the Milwaukee airport since you can't buy that freaking awesome stuff outside Wisconsin. That being said, the Tower 10 is a decent IPA but hardly one of the best to be found in the rich San Diego craft brew scene.

The standard amber color with tan head and nice lacing looks the part. The aroma is certainly hoppy, but that fresh piney citrusy stuff that makes Cali IPAs so great is a bit muted and stale here. Still, the brew tastes nice, nicely bitter, just not quite up to par with what you will find around the area. But i will happily drink this instead of coprorate swill found in many airports across the land any day.

Had on tap at LAX before heading back to Australia. Good way to end a trip back home.

A-- Poured a dark gold color. Half finger of off white head. Shows just a bit of carbonation.

S-- Somewhat muted grapefruit smell. Quite soft. Good carmel backbone, as it warms up the grapefruit does open up more.

T-- Good grapefruit bite to this. Some pine and carmel as well.

M-- Medium carbonation and medium body. Decent sized grapefruit finish to this. More pine in the front of the palate. A little acidic going down. Creamy and lively, with a little prickly added in.

D-- Gets bigger as it warms up. Not a bad IPA at all. Could have a couple easily. Not one of the elites out there but very workable and can not complain.

Poured on-tap in downtown San Diego at the Columbia Street brewpub. The beer was poured into a pint glass, and it pours a bright yellow-gold color, with no head. There is a pleasant nose of hops and basil, with piney undertones. There is a light hop forward flavor, followed by a huge hop explosion on the finish. There is a bitter and empty aftertaste, with a chemical taste to it. The aftertaste alone ruins what was ramping up to be an enjoyable beer. That chemcial feel and taste makes the beer very difficult to drink. Too bad...

20oz for $9 on tap at the San Diego airport, thanks to my delayed flight for the chance.

A: Yellow golden with perfect clarity, a frothy one finger head, and pretty respectable lacing.

S: More aromatic than I expected, with a decided floral quality along with grapefruit rind and pine. There's a touch of candied sweetness once the beer warms and I give the glass a pretentious swirl. Malt is light and of caramel.

T: Moderately bitter and mostly dry with just a touch of malt sweetness. The hops have notes of grapefruit rind with a little flesh, and some accompanying resinous pine. Maybe a little orange, but mostly grapefruit rind and pine. Malt adds a dash of caramel, but the beer is dry overall and especially in the bitter finish. No alcohol or astringency.

M: Lower medium body with moderate carbonation and a dry and sticky mouthfeel.

Overall: I was pleasantly surprised by this. There are so many good hoppy beers in the area that I've overlooked this one, but it's actually pretty good with no real flaws other than not blowing me away. Good airport fare at a hefty price.

Looks: like new pennies. The beer is a beautiful shade of clear copper. A frothy head of grayish-white about half a finger recedes to a thick, foamy layer that never really leaves and deposits large walls of spattered lace as I drink.

Smells: like bright citrusy orange, strawberry, pineapple and grass, along with some light honey sweetness.

Tastes: maltier and toastier than the nose would suggest. I'd almost classify this as a red or hoppy amber with these flavors. Toast, bakery bread and a light nuttiness all show themselves. The hops are an afterthought, offering a slight pop of pithy orange and grapefruit. Acrid bitterness tickles the back sides of the tongue.

Feels: medium-light in body with a muted carbonation. Just a bit watery and runny.

Drinks: like exceeded expectations. I hadn't banked on much performance out of this one, but was pleasantly surprised. A nice, solid IPA that paired very well with fish tacos.

On Tap at the La Jolla, Strauss Brewery
A: Pours a golden/copper with a thin white head (by the time the server dropped it off at the table) nice lacing throughout the pint.
S: Piney, floral and a little earthy hop aromas with a bready malt base
T: Similar to the smell, mostly piney hops with a good hop base
M: medium body with a moderate level of carbonation
D: Well built American IPA, more of a balance between the hop bitterness and the malt base, so this is not the typical west coast IPA

A nice solid effort, though nothing special. Drank a couple of these just killing time at Lindbergh field. Nice copper color, with a thin white head. Smells malty and piney. Tastes malty, with some decent citrus hop flavors (grapefruit) and a nice lingering hoppy finish.

Had on tap at Phileas Fogg's in Poway. Pours a clear dark orange with a little bit of red in it. Standard head of foam, nothing out of the ordinary there. This is definitely more of a "balanced" IPA if you will, but it still has a nice hop flavor. Somewhat citrusy, somewhat earthy and floral. Not as dry as most San Diego IPA's / Pale ales.

On tap while killing time in LAX
Poured a reddish copper color almost like a penny.Nose is floral, citrus, pine and big malt. Taste is wow..good. I thought this was a chewy, malty IPA for a West Coast American style. Floral and pine notes with some citrus to. Mouthfeel is nice and good, went down well and I could have had a few of these but at $7 in the airport I passed.

Tap @ downtown location. Poured clear copper with a short white head. Minimal lacing. Light, grassy aroma with piney hops, white pepper, and citrus. Watery mouthfeel. Refreshing taste, mostly grapefruit and a light bitter resiny taste. Some mineral and bread flavors, dry finish. Came across as an IPA-lite.

Second of two IPAs I had at the brewery restaurant in Sorrento Mesa (the first being the Double IPA). The better of the two, in my opinion.

Slightly darker than golden with little noticeable carbonation. It had no signs of haze, pouring crystal clear. Unfortunately, it was poured with no head and served too cold (just like the one before). After letting it warm a bit, there was more distinct citrus tones to the hopping, both in aroma and taste. Medium mouthfeel, it had a pleasant bitter finish. Would have been worth of a second, if I hadn't eaten so much.

On tap at the Columbia St. restaurant on 3/17/09. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a clear copper amber with a 1/2 finger of foamy brite-white head that stays rich and creamy, leaving some very nice looking spotty lacing back. The aroma is floral and spicy with a strong citric character to it. A solid malty backbone of caramel and bread lies in the background, imparting a nice sharp tang to the nose.

The taste has a moderate bitterness to it and a big citrus smack as well. This is nicely balanced by caramel and toasted malts, which combines with the tropical fruit flavors to really level a nice tangy feel towards the back of the profile. Light bitterness and residual sweetness hangs well past the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a bit of firmness to the carbonation but the overall feel is creamy and gentle on the palate.

I liked this. They appeared to use Crystal & Cascade hops, going the more spicy citrus bomb route with this. IMHO, probably a good idea, as it retains a fresh West Coast feel but still remains accesssible to the less adventurous patrons of the Karl Strauss chain. This was a nice changeup from the majority of the San Diego hop bombs that I drank my share of on this trip.
