Pours a murky orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and alcohol. Taste is much the same with a slight herbal hop finish. There is a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is easy to drink and pretty tasty.

Appearance - Pours a clear, bright golden orange with a good finger width head, good retention and a resulting thin, sticky lace.

Smell - Aromas are sweet bready malt and with some citric hoppiness.

Taste - Starts with a thick, bready malt character, then a citrus hop kicks in swiftly. The finish is clean and quick, with a hint of caramel in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, with a smooth mouthfeel. Average carbonation. Goes down easy.

Overall - This is a pretty good IPA. Nothing mind blowing, but nothing to turn one's nose at, all the same. No off-putting characteristics, and it's certainly not an aggressive IPA, but it's got a nice balance; a classic IPA lost in the current hop bomb world.

Pours amber with a lasting head.
Nose shows fruity and floral hops. Orange blossom, peach, apricot all show, along with a fruity confectionery note.
Similar flavours: sweet, confectionery-like fruit, sweet clean malt and a bite of alcohol amongst the assertive bitterness in the finish.
Carbonation seems excessive.

Pours a clear bright honey amber hue which leaves a huge fluffy three finger head that leaves a mountain of froth in the middle and lacing everywhere, the smell is piney hops, bubblegum, citrus and boiled candy, the mouthfeel is just over light bodied and lacking a little and the tastes are pineapple, sherbet, mandarins, citrus and the finish is piney hop bitter and dry, overall its not bad and above average but nothing to write home about cheers.

The beer is clear golden orange with good lacing from a huge fluffy light tan head which dissipates slowly.

Smells is a bit light, but has some floral, bitter and citrus aromas.

Taste is a balance of malts and hops, with a light bitter throughout, and a light citrus sweet finish.

Feels very smooth and very drinkable.

A fine good balanced beer, but it's not quite what I am looking for in an IPA. Tastes more like an APA, especially with the lower abv and smoothness.

A - Pours a clear bright copper beneath two fingers of fizzy porous head and spotty lacing.

S - Faint passionfruit, orange, mild hop aromas.

T - Fruity hops, passionfruit and citrus, Fanta with a hint of pine in the finish. Very tame on the IBUs.

M - High carbonation, light to medium body.

O - Seems more of a APA than IPA considering the lack of bitterness, but pleasant enough.

Poured from bottle to pint glass. Looks like liquid amber. Decent head that sticks to the glass. Smells very strongly of citrus, with pine coming right up behind. Tasty hops up front, pine undertones, and just enough malt to balence it out. The citrus and pine come into play again on the aftertaste. Malt becomes slightly more prominent as the beer warms, but not overly so. No boozey taste, for its 7.0 abv, but a pleasant warmth, and great buzz. This being my first IPA, i have nothing to compare it to, but a solid beer. About $7 or $8 for a sixer, so well worth the money. Overall, a pretty good beer. If you see it, get it.

Karl Strauss Tower 10 IPA (tap)

Clear pale yellow with thin head and no retention. Light citrus aroma. Bright citrusy taste with moderate hoppy linger and a medicinal aftertaste. Very thin feel and a light bite.

Nice bright citrus flavor but that’s all that’s going on. No feel, no malt and a poor linger and aftertaste make this an avoidable beer.

Notes taken 05/30/12
*22oz bomber into a FW pint glass

A: Tower 10 pours a glowing yellowish straw color with a perfect fat finger width of foamed ivory. Tiny streaming bubbles. Nice retention leaves some clingy stained glass lace.

S: The aroma opens with pine, dank hops, and some sweetened pale malts towards the background. Akin to a bit of honey slathered bread. A dash of flower and spice mixed in as well.

T: Flavors are big and resinous pine with more of a citrus blend than detected in the nose. Good hop intensity. Has a definite kick of herbal spice. Sugary malt cracker presence. Grapefruit comes through with a touch of bitter melon. Alcohol just barely noticeable at 7%ABV. An overall nice IPA. Sticky and resinous.

M: Medium in stature. Some nice creaminess provided by even carbonation. Crisp and dry in the finish. Lingering hop resins.

D: A nice take on the West Coast IPA with a good classic mix of pine and citrus from American hop varietals and just enough malt character to bridge a gap here. A welcomed offering at many of the local venues like Petco Park, the Airport, the Fair, etc.

Tower 10, let's hope it's a 10 out of 10. Bad joke aside I'm always keen to taste what our American brethren produce; they may have a crappy health care system, screwed up gun laws, and overall lack any form of tact when it comes to international diplomatic situations, but the USA does one thing well: craft beer. And with that my taste buds stand to boldly taste where no bud has tasted before [cue Tongue Trek theme].

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Nice and heady. The 2cm dense white head on this brew towers over the hazy bottle-conditioned burnt orange body like the aforementioned tower... *ticks box*

S: Citrus, pine and toasted malt, it has them in spades. There is also a nice sharp acidity to the aroma.

T: Quite ordinary here. Toasted malt base with bitter pine hops, bitter citric hops followed by the bitterness of an orange rind... Oh and did I mention it was bitter? Yes? OK it's bitter, not mouth-smashingly-tastebud-crashingly bitter but bitter enough to be noticed, which in itself is alright but it's missing more flavours, something else, stone-fruits or herbaceous tang would have been great additions, as it stands its a half beer in flavourland.

M: Here is where Tower 10 shines: a mid to heavy resinous body with some tight packed carbonation, nice.

D: I would easily smash a session on this if it was more flavour complex. That is it. Not much else to say. Otherwise a good drop.

Food match: Anti-bitter is my first suggestion... wait, I'm just being told that anti-bitter hasn't been invented yet. Right, something else, dessert would be a best bet (if you're drinking this you would likely be at the dessert phase of the meal anyway), caramelised pears with a fennel jus and crème Chantilly.
