Poured a solid black with little khaki head.

The smell is very sweet with mostly vanilla.

The taste is about the same with almost all vanilla and very faint coffee. I didnt pick up on any barrel in the smell or taste which was a little disapointing.

I didnt pick up on any alcohol which was impressive and it went down super easy.

Look - jet black with a white head

Smell - vanilla with really nothing else

Taste - some chocolate and tons of vanilla beans. Light finish of vanilla. Too much carbonation for my liking.

Overall - good beer not a great imperial stout, no hint of alcohol at all. I still think the 21st is my favorite from Karl

On tap @ The Factory

A- cola colored with a slight head that faded fast and left spotty lacing

S- sweet chocolate, vanilla, faint coffee, and I slight bourbon sweetness. Overall, very sweet

T- a whole lot of sweetness. Can't pull much out. Reminds me of vanilla flavored liquor.

M- thin with low carbonation. Makes me feel like I'm drinking something other than beer, let alone an Imperial Stout

D- got thru the 1/2 pint poured into the glass made for the beer easily. Not much alcohol kick, but not much else either. Verging on too much fake sweetness

Served on tap at Carlsbad location. Pours a deep and dark brown with ruby highlights. A thin cap of tan foam settles to a light ring after a few minutes, leaving light watery lacing.

Nose of chocolate, vanilla and some roasted malts and earthen hops. Hints of oak and bourbon in the background are light initially, expanding a bit with warming. Smoked malt and some cherry accompanying the chocolate notes throughout. Not overly rich yet with a nice balance.

Tastes of vanilla chocolate and roasted malts, again with a light smack of bourbon and oak. Vanilla doesn't overpower the flavor for me but it is present from start to finish and in fact softens the sweetness of the delivery a bit. Feel is smooth and unobtrusive with no alcohol sense to speak of and accompanied with a pleasing carbonation. Body and texture are relatively light but balanced for delivery overall. Smooth drink, moderate across the board. Bottled version will likely be more robust though I don't sense much benefit to putting some age on it.

I tried this recently in La Jolla. I'm not huge fan of vanilla in beers but they seemed to get it to work well here. It was there and in the fore front but somehow not over done.

It poured a dark brown, not quite blackish. Probably lighter than usual for the style. Nice and clear though and looked good. The smell and taste had lots of vanilla. In the taste, it was in the beginning and in the finish mainly. In the middle you could pick up the roastyness (not overly roasty though) and lots of malt and caramel flavors. You can tell alcohol is there but it was nicely controlled and certainly did not dominate.

I could have used a little more roastyness present in this beer but overall I enjoyed it. My sample was big enough though because I only can take so much vanilla. If you like vanilla beers though, this is extremely drinkable.

Draft service into a half-pint snifter at the brewpub in Costa Mesa.

A: Clear, dark garnet-brown with one finger of diminishing light beige foam head. Scant lacing remains on the glass.

S: Abundant dark roasted malt spiked with obvious vanilla notes. The obvious aside, there is complexity present--tree bark, vinous fruit, and faint licorice all make appearances. No alcohol is present in the smell.

T: Begins sweet, with strong volatile vanilla early, followed by pleasantly coffee-infused roasted grain. Acidity is consistently restrained, while flavors dry out somewhat into the dark, earthy middle. Fruit is absent, but a whiff of spirituous barrel is detected. The finish is moderately bitter, featuring charcoal and lingering milk chocolate. While some of the flavors invoke the presence of a tasty bourbon cocktail, the distinct flavor of alcohol is minimized.

M: Medium viscosity, slightly sticky but a little too insubstantial on the palate, with low carbonation.

D: This is a pleasant enough tasting beer in a package whose appearance can only generate skepticism. It shows far too much clarity--literally clear dark red when held to the light--for the style. Appearances aside, roasted malt, barrel notes, and vanilla are well-assimilated into one of the more friendly and approachable imperial stouts I've seen. For a brewery whose track record with porter-based styles has been zero in years past, this makes two relative successes in a row--Parrot in a Palm Tree being the other.

Incidentally, this is review #900. I find it comical that they're filling 64oz growlers of this for $12. On tap at Karl Strauss in Sorrento Valley with 10000 people who just got off work in the business park. I think I'm sitting in a private section of the bar reserved by a company because everyone seems to know each other, they all appear to be drinking Woody Gold, and there are platters of food on tables. Well, perhaps everyone is just really friendly, they all enjoy Woody Gold, and Karl Strauss gives away free food on Wednesday nights. 

Described as "A bold Russian Imperial Stout brewed with vanilla beans and aged three months in American oak bourbon barrels."

A: Deep brown in the tulip glass, bordering on black. I'd reckon 80 SRM if you put a gun to my head. Yes, it says that on the menu but I wasn't looking. The head is light brown and creamy. The pour was subpar so there wasn't much longevity in that department. Lacing is minimal. A pretty alright looking beer. No complaints. I just noticed a deep crimson tinge when I hold the glass to the light of the coy pond. Such magical fish.

S: Bold vanilla profile accompanied by dark chocolate, caramel, oak, and bourbon. Smells good, though the vanilla could stand to be less overpowering. Roasted malt comes out when the beer warms past 33 degrees. 

T: The flavor is quite good and better than I expected. It displays extraordinary balance between roasted malt, vanilla bean, coffee, dark chocolate, and bourbon. I'd love to see more bourbon flavor, but for only 3 months the barrels imparted a good deal of character. On second thought, the vanilla is really strong, it's not balanced. The 9% is well hidden by the bold flavors. Sweetness is at a moderate level, being tempered by a low hop bitterness, coffee, and the roasted malt. There's a dash or caramel in there. The finish is sticky with a dash of astringency, some oak, and notable alcohol warming. The beer has a bit of a vanilla flourish in the terminus. Caramel becomes more pronounced as the beer warms.

M: Lower full body with upper low carbonation. Mouthfeel is silky and sticky with a drying oak sensation on the palate.

Overall: A smooth and easy drinking -bal aged RIS. It's a bit heavy on the vanilla for my taste, but that might be a beloved quality to others. Recommended.

22oz bottle poured into tulip - thanks pat

Pours a viscous, opaque blacked out color with a layering of tanned head. Slowly fades into a coating of filmy retention with some spotty lacing left behind on the glass.

A nice marriage of chocolate and vanilla in the nose, followed by undertones of oak, bourbon and warmth. Roasted malts, leather and sweetness with cocoa.

Plenty of vanilla right up front, matched with dark chocolate and cocoa. Sweet, but not cloying, riding a wave of roasted malts with a hint of roasted coffee beans. Continuing layers of dark malt with vanilla, oak and soft bourbon notes. Finishes a bit sweet and warm.

Fuller body, slightly lower carbonation, creamy and slick on the tongue. Drinks pretty nice considering the age, and the 25% barrel aged portion of the blend adds a decent depth of flavor.

Opened on 10/17/12 WOW, this is what I have been waiting for!

Open it up and enjoy! I've had this beer a couple times now, once last Christmas, and just shared this bottle at my local beer store.

Like you, I was scared to open it... afterall it's been about 2 years. Last Christrmas was good, but right now, whoa.. so perfect.

-Poured a very smooth black, with a khaki head

-The nose brings you in immediately, the vanilla is tremendous now! SO glad I waited.

-The flavor is spot on now, just the perfect ammount of oak, with loads of vanilla. Little bit of chocolate. It is poetic, I hate you Strauss, ha ha. We tasted Bourbon Boris, Lady in the Woods, and Pelican Tsunami tonight... All great beers... 22nd Strauss won our vote.

-Overall - Fantastic beer. I've rested it on its side for a good year, and also stood it for a year.. It's flawless right now. Enjoy!

22oz bottle into a snifter. Pours a pretty thin cola brown w/ a fizzy mocha head that settles to a thin film.

Aroma is very faint - and this beer is not cold. Subtle hints of vanilla and bourbon, but even that is almost a guess. Let it warm & give it a swirl - a nice earthiness emerges, but overall aroma is still less powerful than expected or desired.

Taste is roasty and sweet - again though, both bourbon and vanilla are weak. Some cocoa too.

Mouthfeel is smooth and light. A little thin.

Overall, everything is there - just less of it than I was expecting or hoping for. Almost feel like this was watered down.

Waaay too much wax. I thought I was going to sever a finger trying to get it off. I understand it's special and everything, but consumers actually need to be able to access the product inside.

Pours a deep brown almost black with a big 3 finger off-white head fading into a ring after a minute or so. Spotty lacing down the glass.

Smells of sweet malts with a heavy dose of vanilla obviously and some bourbon characteristics but they are muted. Chocolate and cream also. This one smells sweet.

Flavor starts out with a rich chocolate creaminess. Vanilla is present, but not overpowering. A little bit of roasted malt, but then a touch of bourbon pulls at the back end with just a subtle hint of booze.

Fairly creamy mouthfeel although it is a bit too carbonated for the style.

I have a lot of issues with this beer. Taste is absolutely not one of them though. I really dig the flavors and thought the bourbon was well done. Had it not been for the slight overcarbonation, this one would've probably been a 4.5. Very drinkable and enjoyable.

Tulip glass.

So... this beer is hard to open. Too much wax. It's like that old Bear Bryant saying about endzone celebrations, "Act like you've been there before."

A: Pours dark copper brown/black with two fingers of whispy cream colored head. Some lacing and good retention.

S: Vanilla and cream layered over roasted malt, some oak and spice, but also cheap bourbon. Smells slightly oxidized. Plum and dark chocolate as it warms.

T: Creamy vanilla ice cream and some alcohol, dose of espresso, finishing slightly bitter. On the boozy side.

M: Medium carbonation and medium-full body. Not particularly smooth.

O: This is a pretty good effort, and definitely a step in the right direction for Karl Strauss. There are some nice elements here and some not so nice. Lots of flavors but not that well integrated.

2011 written in Sharpie on the bottle, thanks to danielnovak3 for sharing this guy. Served in a Founders snifter.

A: Pours a dark brown with darkened ruby edges. Small tan head. Looks very light and thin for an Imperial stout.

S: Nice oak and some subtle bourbon with nice chocolate and vanilla.

T: More oak and sweet vanilla. Caramelized sugars and some chocolate.

M: Very thin. Drinks almost like a brown ale. It is drinkable though, but I want my imperial stouts on the thicker side.

O: Definitely super thin for an imperial stout so it got docked some points, but it was pretty tasty overall.

22oz bottle thanks to JRSD. This one was allowed to warm for a little bit before being poured into my Bruery tulip.

Karl Strauss's 22nd Anniversary Stout pours not quite entirely black, there's a pinprick of ruby highlight coming through at the bottom of the glass. There's just over three fingers of caramel foam serving as a crown to the beer. Head retention is jut alright, and lacing is very spotty. The nose is heavy on vanilla-sweetened chocolate. Bourbon is barely there, but toasted oak is much more prominent. The flavor follows along a similar path. Sweet milk chocolate leads things off, and there's just a touch of bourbon where I'd normally expect it to come in big, and instead there's a fairly sizable toasted oak finish. It's something that I don't find in a ton of barrel aged beers, but I dig it in this one. The body isn't near full or rich enough for an imperial stout. The carbonation is perfectly leveled for the body though, it's present without ever coming to the foreground. This is my first Karl Strauss brew, and it's a pretty solid one. Coming on the heels of drinking Black Tuesday last night though, its shortcomings are especially apparent.

A- Very black, decent head retention, not much lacing to speak of but good overall here

S - Chocolate, Vanilla - Chocolate chip cookie, some roast if you look for it.

T - See nose, vanilla is in check but still dominates. Becomes overly sweet towards the end but I was impressed nevertheless - felt this a better version of Victory at Sea from Ballast Point. Yeah...I said it. And Yes, I understand one is a Porter and One is a Stout beeeitchez.

M - Velvety, slick and smooth. Already feels like it has a year of age on it. This needs to be revisited in a year!!

O - Again, call it blastphemy but this is a much better done Victory at Sea. Very good beer here.

Thanks to Shane (HopHead84) for sending this one my way - finally got around to opening it. Served in a Bruery tulip. This one is about 6 months old.

A - Big tan foam settles to a thin cap, leaving patches of spotty lace behind. Dark brown body with some reddish transparency to it when held to the light.

S - Lots of vanilla, mild oak, cocoa, milled lightly roasted grains, touch of spirit alcohol and oxidation present.

T - Tons of vanilla, a bit of chocolate, light oak and roasted malt character, touch of caramel and brown sugar, and moderate bitterness in the finish. Alcohol could stand to be a bit better hidden.

M - Roasty, dry, medium body, with pleasant carbonation. Seems undersized for 9% - would be quite nice for a 5-7% American Stout. Since only a portion was -bal aged I'm guessing the base beer is to blame, and not the barrel-aging process.

D - A solid beer with some small flaws. Easy to drink even with the intense vanilla sweetness. I'd have it again, but I don't think this will benefit from additional aging and suspect it could decline rapdily.

22oz brown bomber with a vintage date on the label.

LOOK: Big head, stout black.

SMELL: Vanilla, charcoal, ripe dark fruit, faint oak, burnt sugar, alcohol.

TASTE: Silky smooth, roasted grain, soft charcoal, mellow vanilla, hint of oak, modest hopping, burnt bread.

9% where art thou? Yeah, it is there but super mellow. Beer is playful with some interested flavors thrown at the palate. Perhaps the earth does not shake but the palate wants another sip. Great job guys!

Poured into a snifter.

Dark brown with ruby highlights. Looks pretty thin as it's poured. Head retention and lacing are nice though.

Smells of tootsie rolls, vanilla, and brown sugar. Perhaps some fruity esters. Damn this beer is sweet smelling.

Taste follows smell only less sweet. Tootsie rolls, vanilla, brown sugar, with some oaky tannins that help balance things out. Slightly smokey finish. Definitely better than the smell, but not good.

Super thin. Well carbonated. Is this root beer?

Yikes. Poor showing Mr. Strauss.

A: keeps a foam for several minutes, it also pours a light chocolate color.

S: It has a sweet vanilla, graham cracker, and chocolate

T: It has a sweet chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar, and graham cracker

M: A good mouthfeel, with a nice carbonation

O: Overall, it has a very nice aroma and taste. It is very easy drinking, it is something I could drink one after another. It has a light oak, but not a lot of bourbon at all.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a pint glass...

A-Poured a very deep ruby or cola like color and had a massive frothy 3 finger cream head that dissipates to half a finger with nice lacing...

S-Smells like chocolate milk and sweet vanilla, slight espresso and very sweet malts. Maple syrup as well...

T-Sweet malty vanilla with syrup and milk chocolate, very sweet beer but very subtle on taste. Has a slight oaky or bourbon finish...Nothing pops out at all on these flavors at all but it is smooth and balanced...

M-Light body and high carbonation, very artificial vanilla flavors here and quite foamy...some chocolate and oak. didn't like this mouth one bit...

O-Nothing special here, just a decent dessert like beer thats ok.
Wasn't expecting to much from Karl strauss on this stout...It wasn't
horrible by any means, I mean I enjoyed drinking this but it was just lacking a lot from what it said it was going to be and for its style .

Received as an extra in a a trade with Thome.

Poured at room temperature into a pint glass.

A: Just like Coca Cola. Deep brown with some transparency. Lots of fizzy head.

S: Bourbon, vanilla and chocolate malts.

T: This is one if the worst examples I have had of a barrel aged stout. The carbonation interferes with the taste. Once you get past that it tastes like cream soda mixed with Russian Imperial Stout.

M: Over carbonated, fizzy and way to thin for the style.

O: I was excited to get this as an extra, but it can't hold a candle to most other stouts I have had.

Have had this couple times. The first it was bland and flat. Not too much going on. It is Karl, so I can expect something like this from them. I think the best thing since their Oatmeal Stout.
A: Dark brown with red light that shines through.
S: Small, very little hint of vanillal
T: Kind sweet, with a little dampness to it
M: Not too much. Very light-medim bodied.
O: The first time I've had this it wasn't mature yet. Few months lagter it had some boldness too it. Not much, but again...cheers.

Poured into an oversize wine glass. Night cap in tonight's session with Cavery.

A: Surprisingly brown in appearance-- light brown on the edges and progressively dark toward the middle, which is a very dark brown/black ball. The head also seemed to be off-color, being surprisingly white in appearance. The color of the head was, strangely, the color of cheddar cheese melted with sauteed onions.

S: The description is right, oak and vanilla in the nose with a little dark fruit and spice hovering in the background. Smells a little low quality though compared to other brews I've had with the same ingredients/process.

T: Taste again is on the description-money, heavily vanilla with oak aging. The quality of both flavors seems to be a little low quality; like the difference between vanilla extract and vanilla beans. Another problem with the taste is that the vanilla and bourbon dominate, and the underlying stout is hard to find.

M: Mouthfeel is alright, though I would say it is a little overcarbonated and could use more thickness.

O: I would say to age this one but I'm not sure what benefit it would have. I think that this is a good stepping stone beer if you're introducing someone to microbrew stouts. Tasting the 'barrel age' or 'vanilla' in this would probably familiarize someone with the general flavor/sense of both, and also give them a foundation for appreciating the superiority of better barrel aged/vanilla infused beers. Otherwise, worth picking up if you're curious but not if you're looking to be impressed.

Shared with Klym, a night cap to a solid Friday Night; 750 ml into Oversized Wine Glasses.

A: the amount of light that gets through makes me question it's "stoutyness". If I was to take a glance at the glass, I would immediately cry porter. Even then, I would say light porter. I remember being able to look from under my glass into the base of the head. a finger to 1/2 finger head featured lighter bubbles than would be expected. So far nothing alarming, but not exciting either.

S: Strong vanilla in the nose. Really quite a dominating vanilla. It sits above every other smell like a cruel overlord. Any other smells that come up are quickly whipped down by the emotionless vanilla. Bourbon tries to escape its vanilla master, but to no avail.

T: Vanilla with some oaked woodiness. Mellow and vanilla makes for a whip cream/creamy top on a sundae. However, you keep expecting your spoon to break through something other than the cream. It honestly never seems to, and you get repeat spoonfuls of vanilla infused whip cream.

M: Yeah, the theme continues. A very average mouth with some pg-13 carbonation. Nothing really exciting here, it just is.

O: All things considered, the vanilla did a lot to save this beer from being lost in mediocrity. All the flavor seemed to be juxtaposed rather than integrated. First cream then vanilla. This beer wasn't bad, but it suffered from the fear of being great. This brew was rot with anxiety. Come out of your shell Strauss, and you might say something surprising. Next time take some risks, and I'll make a nicer review.

First review! Poured from bomber into snifter.

Pours a deep brown that is almost black. A one finger head gives way (rather quickly) to almost no lacing. Smell is a combination of licorice, vanilla from the oak barrels and slight chocolate with just a hint of bourbon in there as well. Taste is a bit sweeter than normal, with a nice touch of vanilla that kind of rounds everything out. The taste sticks around for a bit, but not as long as I'd like.

Overall a pretty tasty Imperial Stout. I'll definitely be buying another bottle of this to age for a few years. It's nice to see Karl Strauss starting to take risks, even though not all of them may be risks worth taking (i.e. Flan-Diddly-Anders)
