On Tap during San Diego Beer Week 2012. Notes from 11/2/12

The name alone is enough to make your mouth water.

While traditional in English Porter appearance, this beer really sucks you in with the smell of peanut butter, especially as it warms a little. (I never wanted to wash my growler after)

The taste is very similar to a peanut butter cup. The mouthfeel is a little light, but that somehow amplifies the taste of peanut butter and chocolate. Vanilla also present, but the heart of it resides in a Reeses peanut butter commercial.

Put this in my halloween bucket every year please. I hope Karl Strauss brews this again, and again.

Served on-draught into a New Belgium stem-goblet at a specialty beer bar in Southern California. I was surprised to see this available in the L.A. area. Reviewed from notes. Paired with sausage.

A: Pours a half finger khaki colour head of nice cream and thickness, and above average retention. Body colour is a dark nontransparent but non-opaque ruby-black. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Good for the style, but the head could be better.

Sm: Peanut butter, chocolate malt, dark malts, chocolate/cacao, caramel, and a rich malty sweetness. A pretty strong aroma. Not as peanut buttery as you might expect; this is not a Southern Tier take on the style (whether that's for better or for worse).

T: Peanut butter - especially on the climax - but it's somewhat artificial. Dark malts form the foundation. Creamy on the finish. Little chocolate comes through; that's disappointing. Well layered in the body, but not horribly complex. I wouldn't call it simple, but it neither hits the one note it should nor offers a well rounded flavour profile with hints of peanut butter. I'm not let down per se, just surprised. Decently balanced. No yeast or alcohol comes through.

Mf: Smooth, creamy, and wet. Nicely thick. Good carbonation. Lacks sufficient palate presence; there isn't much depth of flavour here.

Dr: Drinkable but unremarkable given what they were going for. They missed the mark; this simply doesn't taste like peanut butter cup. Still, it's not quite the marketing gimmick you might expect. It just doesn't deliver. I wouldn't get it again, but it's a nice little porter. As specialty beer, though, it's not particularly notable.

On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a clear dark orange-brown with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasted malt, chocolate peanut butter cup candy, and vanilla aromas. Taste is much the same with peanut butter and vanilla flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but the aromas and flavors seem the slightest beer artificial.

Tap at The Local in San Diego. Pours brown with some ruby around the edges and a small khaki head. Aroma of chocolate and peanut butter, some light roast, hazelnuts. Flavor follows more hazelnut than peanut bitter, some lightly roasted chocolate, and a nice bitter finish that keeps this from being cloying like other peanut butters I have had. Went well with peanut butter cups the bartender gave me. Relatively light bodied and this came off like a super flavorful but brown. That isn't a bad thing, and this is pretty good. Would have again.
