Glass: Ayinger pils glass

Steiner's Stoaner Zwerg Pilsner is a moderately satisfying German pilsner with agreeable hop bitterness, scent, and flavor, though the latter two could be better defined and more robust and lend a more distinctive, interesting overall flavor to the beer. Better than many US attempts at the style, but still not one I'd seek out to try again unless I was in its district in Germany.

Pours a 1cm tall head of white colored foam, made up of small and medium-sized bubbles, somewhat soapy-looking. Retention is a bit below average, the foam falling to a thin ring around the perimeter of the glass in less than one minute. Body is a moderate golden yellow color, with light bringing out pale yellow hues. Carbonation visible through transparent body, moderate in number, low in activity.

Aroma is lightly hoppy, with medium-light freshly cut lemon, a bit of grape ester, and dried wild grasses. Pleasant, a bit better than average, but a bit under-intense for a pilsner.

Taste is moderately hoppy with light bread-like sweetness in the background. Front of palate experiences light sweetness, light floral, grass, and dried herb hop characters. Mid-palate tastes more upfront hop character, with medium-light intensity freshly cut lemon, a bit of grape ester, dried wild grasses and flowers, all atop a lightly bread-like pilsner malt body. Back of palate experiences medium to medium-low hop bitterness with dried herb and grass flavors, reduced lemon citrus, very light pale malt sweetness. Aftertaste of moderate hop bitterness, dried grasses and herbs, and mild bread-like sweetness in the background.

Beer is medium-light in body, with carbonation that is medium to medium-high in intensity, leading to a somewhat thin, borderline fizzy mouthfeel that calms to a foamy (3/4) and smooth (1/4) presence as time elapses. Closes quite dry, with light stickiness clinging to the palate.

Golden filtered with moderate carbonation, topped with 3 fingers of off white broken glass head.

Sweet malts, corn, a touch of molasses, and fresh cut hay.

Malt, corn, light sweetness, rust, hard water, then ends with fresh cut hay and hint of Saaz like hop bitterness.

Light body, lots of carbonation.

Found and drank in Chiang Mai. Love the label and Belgian style bottle. A little lacking otherwise, especially for the style.

Pours pale amber, transparent, thin white head. Small amounts of lacing. Aroma is thin, a bit grassy with hops. Taste is dry, good hops for a Pils and maybe a bit bready. Crisp, dry feel a bit of lingering bitterness hangs out coating my mouth. Overall I would call it a dry bready bitterness.

.33L emptied into a Pokal.

A: Pours clear with a 1-finger head which quickly receeds to a thin ring. Some lacing.

S: Hops, latent malt.

M: Light bodied with mild carbonation.

T: Hops, but not much else. Malt presence is weak, midrange is almost imperceptible. Finish is crisp-ish, aftertaste is slightly bitter.

D: A gift from last Christmas that I forgot about in the cellar. Expiration date was 25 May 2011. It goes down easy and with little effort, but not worth the effort to track it down.

Clean appearance, pale yellow color, average white head.
In the smell: malt, oxidation, maybe corn (or maybe it's just the oxidation). Nothing good, anyway.
The same for the taste. Some hops, and also not so bad, but all the rest...
Bad. Particularly for a pils beer.
For the rest: nothing to say about.
