Retired to Lompoc CA in 2017 from Philly and was surprised to find a variety of German beers in the local shops. Guess I am not the first German beer lover to retire here. The Reutberger Export Dunkel was on the shelf at Liquor Emporium so I cleaned them out, storing them in my beer fridge. Generally not a huge fan of dunkel lager unless fresh draft from Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh or Brauhaus Schmitz in Philly, but this one was very flavorful and has aged well at 38F in my cooler. Pours a dark brown with tan foamy head. The taste was full of caramel, malt and brown sugar. Very much hoping they will resupply this delicious beer.

I was on a short trip to The Bottle Room in Downingtown, PA recently in support of PHL Beer Week 2017 when I saw this bottle on their shelves. I am reluctant to build up the dwindling Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, but my efforts have made enough room that I do not feel TOO guilty about its purchase.
From the bottle (translated from the German): "Brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot of 1516"; "Brewing tradition of over 300 years"; "1677 A.D."
Having Pop!ped the cap, I began a slow, gentle pour into an awaiting 0.4L stein. I was amazed and fascinated by the amount of dense, foamy, light-tan head that formed in spite of my gentleness, puffing up to greater than three fingers before slowly falling away to wisps. Color was Brown to Dark Brown (SRM = > 22, < 27) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was bready with the banana esters of a hefeweizen and if you don't think that I am going to say "banana bread", then you would be sadly mistaken. Mouthfeel was kind of thin, but very soft in spite of all of the carbonation evinced by the head. I would venture to guess that a Hefeweizen yeast strain was used in the production of this beer since it had not only banana esters (aplenty), but also a light clove spiciness and a bready maltiness. I am becoming more tolerant of banana esters than I was in the past, but they still do not really excite me like bitter hops are wont to do. Finish was semi-sweet, but I still found it to be a pleasant, enjoyable excursion into German beer.

Look is not very impressive. Kinda light brown and semi clear with a fizzy 1 finger head that quickly disappeared. Smell is pleasant caramel/brown sugar and bread, but all very light. Taste is light yet very pleasantly flavored. I taste the German/European water that distinguishes it from any American attempts. Light caramel sweetness and bready. Nothing heavy here at all but just a nice pleasant easy drinking brown ale from German. Recommend but not blown away.

(code L1334 - Dec 2011? Dec 2013? when? - poured into a 20 oz British pint)
A: dark coppery hue, clear, with an attractive creme-colored head that slowly recedes, coating the glass with a sheet of foam film that gradually contracts into webby streaks... keeps a solid little collar around till the end
S: beautiful, bold, dark malts... mildly sweet, moderately toasty, chocolate-coated biscuit... roasted grain lurks beneath... undercurrent of apple-y fruitiness... overall, textbook aromas for the style
T: sweetish, toasty, cereal-like grain foundation... balanced, soft, rounded roastiness... fairly assertive hop/roast bitterness... perhaps a touch smoky in the finish... lightly nutty, chocolaty aftertaste
M: feels a notch or two lighter than it should... very pleasing medium-bodied core... perfect degree of fade-away dryness in the finish to compliment the initial swell of fullness
O: I'm actually a bit surprised how damn good this is... dopplebock flavors at dunkel lager strength... I could easily drink a whole Maß of this... can't always judge a beer by its label
