Sitting here drinking it right now. ,5L bottle into a mug. Pours a dark amber colour. It has a fairly large and frothy tan head, drops a bit but the remainder has the staying power of a house. By far the lightest of the darks I've had. Draws unusual webs as it goes down the mug, but that could just be the mug's fault.

I absolutely adore the nose of this one. It's aromatherapy. Wonderful toasted malts and nuts with sweet notes of caramel and bread. It's delicious. It's enticing. It's everything I could ask for from the aroma of a beer. Toasty and tasty.

Not quite perfect, but pretty damn close. Start with the nose. It has a malty, bready taste. On top, add sweet nut and wood syrup (not like maple syrup, but not like caramel, either -- not something I'm too great at explaining). Some roasted-coffee-like flavours. The sweetness gives way to a bit of roasted, smoked hops flavour (I wonder what that recipe would actually taste like, though -- probably not nearly as tasty as this beer). Almost no bitterness on the finish. Extremely well-balanced. Never beats you to death with anything and certainly doesn't hurt in terms of bitterness.

It feels smooth and substantial in the mouth. It actually appears significantly more carbonated than it feels. Slight tingle and otherwise creamy. Definitely no slouch here. Finish is somewhat dry. I thought about drinkability briefly before I noticed where my beer was. It begs you to drink more. You look at the lacing, the sudsy foam and the distinct dark amber colour and you just want more. I could (but won't) get plastered off this one without even noticing it. It's good stuff, every last bit of it. Not bitter by any means. You just want more as you go. Bottoms up, boys!

Poured from the bottle into a Libbey pilsner glass. Uh oh, green bottle.

A real nice hued deep chestnut and mahogany brown body color. Light tan head a bit foamy but with a nice growing pinhead sized bubbles in the formation. Settles to a creamy tan puck. Not much rising carbonation. Pretty solid.

Wow this smells like a doppelbock. Big clove notes, and cinnamon brown hot spices. Nutmeg and clove are all over this thing. A clean hop aroma of matching spice as well. NO SKUNKING luckily, we have dodged the skunk monster.

Very clean palate. Light crisp and with a nice caramel malt backbone, hints at light anise and licorice quality, with minimal toffee sweetness. Clean hop popping finish, and grain light airy quality. Good mix of light crispness and malt density as well for easy drinking.

A real solid dunkel lager, luckily feel even better dodging the green bottle of death (it appeared brown should have looked at the bottle cap neck closely I would have known better.

11.2oz bottle poured into a lager glass.

A: Brown in color with orange hues. Rocky off-white head retains very well. Foamy clumps of lacing adhere to the glass.

S: Grainy and husky. Bready, toffee, crust. Hint of brown cocoa powder. Caramel. Grassy hops. Subtle grape leaf. Clean.

T: Toast, caramel, cola, brown cocoa powder, brown bread. Husky grain. Hay. Grassy hops. Sweet. Clean. Whisper of alcohol. Caramel, cocoa, and husk on the finish.

M: Medium bodied. Full and creamy on the palate. Some syrupy residual sugars. Low carbonation amplifies the syrupy feel. Husky grain brings a mild astringency.

O: Just as in the pilsner, the husky grain gets to me. It would be a more enjoyable beer if not for that. Could use a little more carbonation too.

Poured clear amber brown with a weak head.
Aroma had more sweet caramel malt than medium roasted malt, but this is reversed in tasting. The lightly sweet flavor suggests dark bread baked with some brown sugar.
Medium body with spot on carbonation.
O: very good exemplar of style.
