355 mL can picked up at TBS; served well-chilled. The can doesn't actually say what type of amber this is, so I'll have to go with The Beer Store's unreliable classification (which considers it a lager).
Pours a bright, golden-amber colour, topped with one finger of soapy, sparkling white head that vanishes quickly over the next few minutes. No cap, no lace - a pretty weak-looking beer, overall. The aroma is mildly sweet and malty, with hints of caramel, pale malts and not a whole lot else. Fine for a budget beer, I suppose.
And that carries over into the flavour - which isn't interesting at all, but is reasonably balanced and superior to most beers in this price bracket. A little corny, but for the most part it's just grainy malt sweetness, a touch of caramel, with an odd chocolate vibe toward the finish. Fairly dry finish, with some light sweetness that quickly fades. Thin-bodied and kind of watery, with moderate carbonation appropriate for the style. Sessionable, and less of a chore to drink en masse than the vast majority of 'value' beers.
Final Grade: 3.02, a C+. PC Down Under Amber isn't spectacular, but it's passable for the price and probably better than the other two new 'crafty' PC brews (the IPA and Black Lager). It is vastly superior to all of the budget ambers I've tried previously, and I'd also take this over Rickard's/Keith's Red as well. This isn't going to serve as a real substitute for a craft-quality amber, but it's quite decent for what it is, and worth a try if you're a budget beer drinker looking for something marginally less dull than usual.
