Pours a kind of light amber colour with not even a fingers worth of head. Smells of grass, lemons and floral hops. Tastes pretty much like it smells, though a little more grassy. Mouthfeel is thin and watery. Overall, not good, but not bad either. I won't be buying it again.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Less than impressed with this brewery so far, but lets see how the IPA goes.

Appearance - So far so good. 2 plus fingers of dense white head rest on top of a rich and clear copper color. Some lacing is left behind after a moderate retention time.

Smell - Mild ale aromas, some grainy aromas and light floral background. Not much to distinguish it from others but certainly passable.

Taste - Metallic, some mild malty flavors and some grains in there too, but the moderate metallicness is a bit too much.

Mouthfeel - High carbonation and a good crisp mouthfeel and medium bodied. A bit gassy for my likking but respectable.

Overall - Flavors are a bit of let down, but definitely a beginners IPA, for those wanting to expand their horizons a bit, but aren't ready to fully jump into craft. The rest of the beer is fine, albeit not spectacular, but if the flavors were less metallic I would consider picking this up again, although better options are available locally.

Not sure why I bought a can of this, but I did.

A - Pours golden to deep golden. Bright with good carbonation. Two fingers of creamy off white head. No real lace, half finger retention.

S - Metallic, earthy, mild stone fruit. A bit boring.

T - Metallic, smokey, weird stone fruit. Not good.

M - Good carbonation, medium body, a weird bitterness.

O/D - Not the best example of the style. This one is definitely skippable. A very ordinary attempt at the style.

473 mL can from a sampler pack picked up at the LCBO; coded E31312. Served slightly chilled. Apparently this was released with very little fanfare about a year or two ago, but I've never heard of it or even seen it until now.

Pours a light, clear golden-amber colour, producing just over a finger's worth of foamy, frothy white head. It leaves behind a delicate doily pattern of lacing on the sides of the glass as it shrinks over the next few minutes, eventually reduced to a dense cap and collar. Looks great to me, but the aroma offers nothing interesting or even particularly enticing - lemony citrus, light earthiness, some floral tones and caramel maltiness are all detectable, combining to form a relatively bland bouquet with an aire of rusty dish soap.

Unfortunately it really doesn't get much better from there. Grainy malts and caramel provide a weak malt backbone and some light sweetness, with the uninspired hop bill offering a mixture of grass, lemon and floral notes. The finish is this one's saving grace and the only thing that makes the beer halfway tolerable - its light bitterness and slight metallicity reminds me of some actual (lower-end) English-made IPAs. Either way, it doesn't linger on the palate long. On the lighter side of medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel; one of the better aspects of this beer overall. This is easy to drink quickly because of its mild flavour and low abv, and indeed, the mild bitterness in the aftertaste encourages rapid sips.

Final Grade: 2.81, a forgettable C grade. Waterloo Traditional IPA isn't a particularly good ale, and frankly I'm not sure what market Brick is aiming for here. It's obviously not the American IPA fans, but even proponents of the milder English style are unlikely to be enthralled with this tepid, relatively bland offering. Like most of Brick's beers under the Waterloo label, this is a weak effort and not something I'd return to regularly - reminds me of a knock-off of Wells IPA, except this stuff probably costs more. This has potential as a gateway beer (to show Keith's drinkers the bare minimum of what constitutes an IPA), but other than that... pass.

A : clear copper, 2 fingers of thick, tan, chunky head, slow dissipation, leaving okay lacing throughout

S : i found this quite potent of malts, bready, some toast, some very minor sweet notes afterwards

T : very grassy, strong malt, bready, grainy, a bit spicy in the middle, slightly bitter hang on the finish

M : medium body, higher carbonation,a tad heavy

O : I was a bit disappointed in this one, it seems like the more i drank the less i enjoyed this. I found it tasted very grassy and malty with a similar potent aroma which was not that pleasant and kind of boring. This was okay.

Pours a clear golden amber with a decent-sized though short-lived head. Virtually no smell at all - had to take my time, warm it up and swirl it around to make sure I was right, but it really does smell like nothing.

Moderate caramel sweetness, somewhat underbalanced by wimpy hops. There is bitterness but very little distinctive hop character.

As an IPA it's... just not an IPA. It's about halfway between Keith's and a real IPA, at most.

As an English Pale Ale it's not awful... simple and a little underwhelming, but nothing overtly offensive about it. Seems like it could be massively improved with a little late hops. I did not find an expiry date but my local Beer Store does not move a lot of craft stuff, so maybe it was past its prime.

Got this at the LCBO

From a 16oz can into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, looser looking, foamy, off-white head with good retention. Burnt orange in color, clear, with higher levels of carbonation. Head fades to a thin wisp witn lots of carbonation at the top. A foamy cap remains and leaves some lacing down the glass. Okay, but still too carbed for the style.

SMELL: Grainy, bready malts, some caramel notes with light floral aromas as well. Too grainy for the style for sure.

TASTE: Mildly grainy with some caramel malt flavors up front, then more bready sweetness and floral hops at the swallow. Mild yet lingering finish of bready sweetness and some floral hop bitterness. Too bready for me, and relatively boring.

PALATE: Thinner body and higher levels of carbonation. Light on the palate, creamy enough, goes down fine and finishes dry on the palate. Grainy sweetness lingers.

OVERALL: Not horrible by any means, but not my take on the style either. Too grainy and bready, and the feel is too thin and carbonated. If it's a traditional English IPA, then I'm certainly glad we've moved on. Pass.

The second of my Waterloo sample pack, and this one is a little dissapointing.

I poured this into my Stella Chalice. The colour is just... not good. It, quite honestly, looks like diarrhea. The smell is decent enough, but not as flowery or fruity as some other craft IPAs. The taste is VERY weak compared to other IPAs in its class. There is your basic hoppy IPA flavour, but it just doesn't have any complexity to it, it's such a shame. The aftertaste is just a lingering bitteress without much fruity or otherwise complex flavour to it... certainly a lot of room for improvement. The feel has a little body to it, and a restrained amount of carbonation certainly helps the case. Still overall, this IPA falls to the wayside when compared to other ones.
