Coming up Mass Ave and needed some beer, so I cruised into the place where I used to stand out front and ask people to buy for me. Times change, so did the beer selection. The had Rogue, North Coast, a few belgiums. I had also missed the beer "tasting" that night. Was I still up the street from Tip O'Neils old home? This was comfirmed when I stepped up to the counter. The clerks, although friendly, had no clue abot the Dog Fish Indian Ale I was buying, asking if it tasted like fish. Some things never change.

From the outside, Buy-Rite looks like a good place to get your 30 packs of Natty Light, if not for the sign advertising "Top-Rated Beers and Ales." Once you enter, however, and walk past all of the macros, there is a wooden shelf with many excellent micros/imports (Stone, Dogfish, Rogue, Unibroue, Duvel, Orval, etc.). A lot of local stuff in the cooler as well (Concord, Wachusett, the ubiquitous Harpoon) On one visit, the owner/manager (I'm not sure which) said that he decided which beers to carry based on the top 50 from RateBeer.com. The prices are quite good, especially compared with the closest good beer store (Downtown Wine & Spirits), but the selection is more limited. The cashiers are a bit clueless - my wife bought me a Trois Pistoles in a commemorative tube and they asked her if it was Scotch! They have beer and wine tastings (usually Firday 5-7), but sometimes the beer tastings are actually malternatives, so beware! This place is definitely worth a look.

All the times I passed this place it just looked like your regular swill shop with posters informing you how cheap their swill is. Then one day I see a sign out front "Top 50 beers from Ratebeer.com". So I wonder why the sign doesn't say Top 50 from BA.com - especially when the BA's are probably more well known around these parts?
It looks like they just added a new shelf and put some pretty decent selections in there- I guess you would need to go to ratebeer.com to find out what they are. I did a quick scan of the selection for good prices and/or beer I haven't seen before. All of the selections are available elsewhere in the area and the prices were about average for most selections but much cheaper than Downtown Liquors in nearby Davis Sq. Standouts were $3.00 bombers of McNiels and $2.45 bottles of Orval. I picked up some Orval, but they were a little sour - maybe that's why they were cheap? I can't comment on the rest of the stock, but I hope its better than the Orval was.
