This is a very approachable Belgian, a good first for the uninitiated. It still has the spicy flavor we all know and love, but it's not so strong that drinkers can taste cloves through their urethra on its way back out again.

It's like the results of Duvel having a raunchy one night stand with a lightly hopped lawnmower beer.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

Well, well, well ... don't we have a little winter surprise here from August Schell. Looks like someone did their homework on Belgian brewing, a bit refined but not lacking some complexity. Get some.

LOOK: Brilliantly clear pale golden hue, sticky lacing all around.

SMELL: Mildly phenolic, taffy, spice, kiwi, chalky grain, clean esters

TASTE: Deep crispness, smooth, moderate sized body, dry malt backbone, coriander, herbal tea, faint citrus rind, modest hopping, bready, slight alcoholic warmth, semi-dry finish

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into wine glass.

Appearance: Clear light gold with big, initial white head but dissipates too fast.

Smell: Banana, pepper, clove, cracker and light flower notes.

Taste: Crackery malts with banana, fleshy fruits, clove, pepper, coriander and mild flowery and spicy notes. Tasty but slightly muted.

Feel: Moderately high carbonation, yet it has a soft feel. Fairly light bodied for the abv. Semi-dry finish.

Overall: Very drinkable and tasty Belgian Golden Ale although it could use a titch more, well, something. This works well for the Holidays, as something about it is a little "Noel"-like.

Fresh bottle of this year's Schell's Snowstorm series.

A-Poured into a goblet, this brew unlike its Belgian brethern is completely clear. Light golden with a finger of white head that breaks down into a thin layer.

S-Belgiany-lots of estery goodness with a clean malt aroma with coriander noticeable. Smells great.

T-The Belgian character is mostly fruity banana/bitter orange esters, some spicy phenolic character but the estery character is stronger. Plenty of malt to carry the flavors of barley malt with the essence of coriander. Has a nice floral quality as well-I guess that must be the chamomile.

M-Super clean and crisp for a Belgian. Highly carbonated with a light body and a soft mouthfeel but impressively no alcohol bite. Damn easy to drink.

O-This is a pretty solid Belgian-esque brew. Nice flavors, clean taste and super high drinkability. This with a super affordable $11 for a 12 pack equals a beer I'll be drinking a lot of over the next couple months.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright and clear golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of white head that slowly fade into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A yeasty, spicy, and fairly fruity Belgian style aroma. Upfront scent of Belgian yeast along with a mix of spices including clove, white pepper, coriander, and chamomile. Fruit hints of banana, white grape, apple, and pear. Slight citrus hints of lemon and pineapple. Hint of bubblegum as well. Wheat and pale malt with hints of cereal grains, straw, hay, and cracker. Subtle earthy hops. A nice yeasty and zesty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a zesty, yeasty, and spicy Belgian style taste with some nice notes of fruit. Belgian yeast upfront with some notes of funk and clove, coriander, white pepper, and chamomile spicing. Fruity taste with notes of bananas, apple, white grapes, and pear. Taste of bubblegum. Also some zesty citrus fruit notes of lemon and pineapple. Bready wheat and pale malt with notes of cereal grains, straw, cracker, and hay. Subtle earthy and floral hop presence. A pretty solid Belgian Pale Ale taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, spicy, and pretty smooth. Finishes pretty dry.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a Belgian Pale Ale. Good zesty fruit presence with a nice dose of yeast and spices.

Pours a clear, pale golden color with one finger of head that quickly settled to a thin cap. A lot of spotty lacing is left down the glass.

One whiff and even in a blind challenge I could identify this as being an American attempt at a Belgian pale ale. Quite phenolic and spicy. Also get the pale malt and some herbs.

Tastes much more interesting. A bit on the sweet side and not as phenolic as I had feared. I can taste the herbal qualities of the coriander and chamomile. Nice malt flavor as well. Finishes slightly sweet.

Medium body and excellently carbonated. Rivals some of the better bottle conditioned beers. Does not really feel like a 7% ABV beer.

I wish Schell's would abandon the Belgian styles. This is another one, is not average, but does not stack up to the other beers they have brewed.

A: Nice golden color, clear, finger tip depth head and some lacing.

S: Very light smelling to me, but can smell some herbal scents.

T: Very good tasting beer. Tastes like a typical pale ale, perhaps more like an APA than a Belgian. Has a very refreshing, crisp flavor with bread and herbal hints. Not overly spicy as some end up being but enough there to enhance the flavor of the beer. Just enough bitterness to leave a lightly bitter, herbal bread aftertaste.

M: Smooth, slightly creamy mouth feel but light to medium bodied.

Overall: Very solid showing from Schell's. Something with a nice little spice but still refreshing. I could see having a sixer of this in my winter rotation.
