Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a fairly hazy straw yellowish orange with a lot of bubbles. Huge four finger white head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell:A bright, zesty, earthy, and fairly sweet aroma with lots of hop hints and pils malt. Upfront mix of earthy, floral, herbal, and citrus hops. Hints of grass and dank wet pine resin. Citrus fruit hints of orange peel ,lemon zest, grapefruit, mango, and lime. Bready malt balance with hints of pilsener malt, straw, cracker, biscuit, grains, and yeast. Hints of pepper spice as well. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a fruity, earthy, and sweet bready wet hopped version of a pilsener. Upfront hop taste with earthy, floral, citrus, and herbal notes. Grassy notes along with some wet and dank pine resin spice. Citrus fruit notes of orange, lemon zest, lime, mango, and grapefruit. Bready pale malt presence with notes of pilsener malt, biscuit, cracker, straw, grains, and yeast. Slight taste of pepper spicing. A very good zesty taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Crisp, clean, juicy, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty good hopped up twist on a Pilsener. Good wet hop flavors with a solid pils malt balance.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

Hazed pale golden yellow, excellent layer of suds that sticks well to the glass. Orangey, woody, and resiny hop aroma with some cracker and doughy malt. Very smooth, orange zest, cedar, soft resin, bready, peppery, slightly biscuity, clean, doughy, leafy drying finish.

Love the Mosaic hop, well done on keeping this balanced yet leaving a solid fresh hop impression.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Pilsner glass.

Appearance: Hazy, straw color with massive, sticky, stark white head. Great lacing.

Smell: Very dry apple and hay. Citrus and berry from the Mosaic hops. Slightly stronger aroma than I noticed in last year's Citra, mostly due to the berry notes.

Taste: Somewhat of a traditional Pilsner backbone, with straw, apple and pepper. Citrus, berry and tropical notes from the hops. Not really bitter at all, just juicy. More pepper on the finish.

Feel: More moderate in carbonation than most, with an almost creamy body. A little more crisp than the Citra but slightly thinner.

Overall: I really like that Schell's will focus on a different hop varietal each year. I would give this one a slight nod over last year's Citra simply because I like Mosaic a little more. Hop preference aside, both were very good beers.

Pale straw color with a very slight haze. Two fingers form during the pour and slowly settles to a thick cap. Moderate amount of lacing is left down the glass.

I really dig the aroma. It is herbal, floral, dank, and slightly spicy. Not getting much malt aroma but the hops are the focus here as in any fresh hop beer.

A lot of hop flavor as well. This hop flavor might not appeal to everyone, but I really enjoy this. The dankness from the fresh hops come out along with nice herbal and floral notes. Light spice kick as well. The malt is dry, crisp, and clean. Moderate bitterness.

I was just a bit letdown with the carbonation. I would like it just a little more lively. Otherwise a solid, light pilsner body.

Still not sure if a lager is the best way to showcase fresh hops, but I enjoyed this much more than the previous year's Citra hopped version. A very unique and well crafted lager.

BBD: 013014

Hazy pale straw gold, fluffy head of white foam. Sticky halo of lacing in the glass, lasting surface coverage. Lasting surface skim.

Sulfuric lager yeast aroma initially, subtle hop character in the background, pleasant but the lager yeastiness is almost too overpowering. As it warms the Mosaic hop gets a little more pungent and green, slightly catty with traces of green onion.

Simple pilsner malt forms the base vehicle that showcases the subtle and fresh Mosaic hops nicely. Light grassy bitterness, honeysuckle, shortbread. Light bodied and easy drinking. Nice and clean, the hop presence is unique but a little bit too subtle.

Bottle reviewed early November.

A: Pretty golden straw with a white head. Good retention. Several bottles have had a little precipitate, which as best as I can tell, is hop particulate.
S: Nice cracker pilsner malt, fruity, floral hops. Just a little peppery. Reminds me of last year’s version despite hop difference (not too many of this style to compare, I suppose). I think this one is a little more aromatic.
T: Nice combination of bitterness, citrus, white pepper, pine and berry flavor. I usually don’t get that much depth from most hoppy beers. Finishes dry with a bit of white wine character.
M: Light body with medium-heavy carbonation. Lively but pretty smooth

Really like this one. Last year’s was pretty good, but Citra doesn't seem to be my favorite hop. Conversely, I must be a big Mosaic fan because this and the Indeed '13 (Mosaic) Fresh Hop were right up my alley.

Poured into Pilsner Urquell glass.
A really doughy malt presentation is primary and this seems to mix with a kind of a generic wet hop aroma - or to state differently an aroma that I pick up in wet hop beers that seems to be unique to that style.
Nice big white cap and loud settling with some lacing. Pale gold and slightly cloudy look.
Still more malt forward than hops (doughy, bready), but the hops are persistent especially after the initial take. Nice solid bittereness flows through to the end. Soft hop flavors of fruitiness, a little grassiness - that could be bumped up a bit, if possible. The fruity characteristics of the hops open up as this warms. Some sweeter grapefruit shows.
Moderate carbonation and a bit less than that in body. Good feel for style.
I like this. An unique take on wet hop and pils and a new tradition from Schells that will continue to make autumn a time to anticipate.

Served in a snifter.

Huge developing head, two finger's width of pillowy, white foam. Fresh Hop shines with a lemon custard colored body with a nice unfiltered haze.

Vegetal and lemon rind aromas coming from the glass. Not sure I enjoy this combo. Some kind of earthiness /mustiness that does not work either.

Same earthy pilsner flavor on the palate mixing with lemon rind, white grapefruit, and a floral flavor. Still not a fan of the combination. Impressive that the palate is so incredibly mimicking the nose.

Champagne-y pilsner feel. Not very bitter or dry at all. Not a great feel with this sweeter profile.

Fresh Hop is a beer with a decent following. I cannot jump on the bandwagon. The flavor profile is just, weird. Don't go into this thinking of a Mosaic single hop IPA, because that is not what you get.

poured from a bottle into a SA perfect pint glass

a- very clear straw colored pour with lots of lively bubbles cascading from the etching in the bottom of the glass. thick fluffy white head rose almost two inches and took a few minutes to die off leaving nice sticky lacing

s- very grassy/straw scented nose. a bit of a biscuit bready malt as well.

t- follows the nose. grassy hops with just a hint of citrus zest and some bready malt. a bit of green hop quality hangs on in the finish

m- nice lingering finish. nothing spectacular but very easy drinking

overall, another very nice brew from schells. they have the market on local lagers cornered and this is another example why. delicious and sessionable. a quality beer for the style.

12oz bottle best by february

look is a pale yellow, some fine suspended sediment. smell is dusty and skunky, only a slight fruity pebbles scent here, otherwise it's bad. taste is much better: crisp and clean crackers and pear, with peppery herbal hops with hints of exotic fruit.

great beer, but the citra version needs to be year-round

2013 - Mosaic

Pours a white head with decent retention Color is a vibrant yellow hued gold. Lots of active carbonation bubbles in the glass.

Flavor profile: Earthy, fresh, and spicy. Zesty and clean. Bready pilsner malts. Grassy hops. A bit floral.

Mouthfeel: extremely clean with a touch of bitterness. Lighter bodied with a nice amount of carbonation. Ends a little dry.

Overall, another enjoyable fresh hop pils from Schells. I think I like the citra a bit better, but this is still easy drinking and delicious.

A couple things stand out with this beer....

-I get a lemony hop impression....some lighter citrus notes but a lot of lemons...lemongrass....on the nose and the taste

-The spritzy carbonation and feel to this beer....almost a seltzer like feel....not a fan of this....

I'm reviewing this probably too far past when it was bottled. I got my hands on this two weeks ago and thought it was pretty good but it is losing gusto fast. Right now this is pretty average. Prefer last years version better.

pours out a light gold colour with a two finger snow white head. it sticks and stays in merengue like fashion. nice lace. lemony hop aroma with a cracker and biscuit malt base nose. the mosaic hops dominate the pils profile with more citrusy pith of the lemon and grapefruit kind. pils malts provide a sturdy foundation for the slight spicy bite the hopping provides. it certainly is one dimensional but the quenching aspect is a puckering pleasantry that certainly slakes a thirst. i'd give the overall body a thumbs up for being a bit beefy and the mouthfeel is great due to the semi coarseness of mosaic hops. drinkability is great. no one does a pils like Schell's.

overall i would say that this isn't as good as the citra pils from last year but it's satisfying nonetheless. a solid beer, this would be a great summer quencher. looking forward to the anniversary series!

Appearance: Yellow, slight haze, huge head.

Smell: Spicy, grassy.

Taste: Moderate grain sweetness, grassy hops, hint of citrus. Grassiness lasts and lasts.

Overall: Very tasty pilsner here. Not sure how the fresh hops effect the flavor--could the same effect happen with larger quantity of normal hops? Another winner from Schell.

Was hoping this was going to taste as good or close to as good as last year's "fresh hop citra pils" but alas! Sadly, not as good.

A: very light golden color with tons of bubbles rising quickly to the top, thin white foamy head that quickly dissipates
S: This is the beers weakest link...smells just like a super fresh...."Grain Belt". fortunately for me Grain Belt is one of the only swill canoe beers I will drink (I have a soft spot for the ole premium, NEVER "Nordeast" however) unfortunately the "fresh hop" aroma does not come into play here. Smells like a perfect example of a fresh (like off tap) malty sweet pilsner
T: Taste very much like the smell, not much hop flavors coming out, a tad bit of earthiness but no citrusyness to speak of.
M: very carbonated, which most of the time i'm not a fan of but here it works, light body.
O.A. definitely try if your a schells fan but don't expect the greatness that was the citra pils, if you had the privilege of trying that perfect pils! how come all these local breweries do these amazingly awesome citra beers only once but don't do them again!? Lame!

look: 3 | smell: 2 | taste: 1.5 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 1.75

Appearance - Hazy, appropriate color for a pilsener, not much of a head, dissipates quickly

Smell - Like a typical cheap can of pilsener beer, no citrusy mosaic aroma, lots of sulpher

Taste - Horrified by the taste of this beer. I think it was brewed with cabbage. ZERO mosaic flavor. Kind of a spicy finish with a whole lot of skunky flavor. Lots of green apple.

Mouthfeel - Flat, not a particularly great carbonic bite

This is worse than some of my failed homebrews. Maybe I got a bad bottle, but this is simply unacceptable from a commercial brewery. I didn't really have high expectations from Schell's, since I've had some of their other beers, but I was excited this fresh hop mosaic. Not sure how they could lager a fresh hop beer and have it out on the shelves by mid-November, but...whatever the case, this is pretty disappointing...sad panda.

Pours a straw color with a one finger white head with good retention and lacing. The aroma has German Pilsener malt, lemon, grapefruit, and earth.

Has a sweet flavor with lemon, grapefruit, German Pilsener malt, bread, and floral hops. There is some hop bitterness for balance.

Light to medium bodied, crisp, with a light citrus aftertaste. A very nice German Pilsener, which I am glad I had a chance to try.

Schell's Mosaic Pilsner, Fresh Hop, August Schell Brewing, New Ulm, MN.

Appearance: Clear, bright, golden, big, blooming snow-white head, leaving a little lace.

Aroma: Mosaic. What are you, man? Everybody's using you like you're the new hot hop. What are you giving us, what are you bringing to the table, what do you add? It spills out bitter, it busts out sweet, and it gives forth a mind-boggling melange of fruity esters. Maybe Mosaic is an appropriate appellation for this hop, because I can't find one single thing to pin on it. Blend of tropical and citrus.

Taste: Nice fresh bite of hops at the forefront, then all is smooth and easy. There's a little wheat-y texture in the body, some malty sweetness takes over the flavor, and great balance is the end result.

Hey, they have some gobbledygook on the label. " Schell's Fresh Hop Pilsner is made with freshly harvested hops. They are quickly shipped and put in the kettle, preserving their aromatic oils and resins. Contains wheat."

This is pretty tasty stuff, and drinkable as heck. Mmmm. Man, can you drink this one!

From: Beertopia, Omaha, NE
Date: Best by 2014-01-30
Glass: Ayinger pokal/pils glass

Schell's fresh hop pilsner series continues to be an excellent blend of German pilsner tradition and flavor with novel US hopping and resultant aromas and flavors. This is a fairly traditional pilsner base with US hops contributing much of the distinct bitterness and fruit-like flavors; very interesting and good. If this were a year-round and regularly available in my city, I would pick this up fairly often.

Pours a 3cm head of clean, white foam, of small to medium-sized bubbles. Well above average retention of about three minutes, falling to a 0.5cm cap of foam atop the body. Lacing is excellent, a thick sheet of punctuated white foam wrapped around the entire inside of the glass. Body is a hazy, rich, golden-yellow, with light bringing out a pale golden yellow hue throughout the beer. Carbonation is visible through the haze (about 10-20% opaque from sediment), allowing for the viewing of plentiful, active bubbles.

Aroma of grain, light and sweet pilsner malt, light orange and musty grapefruit, slight phenolics, and hints of guava and mango. Good, solid: lighter and more ephemeral than last year's Citra variation, this is still really solid.

Taste is of tropical fruits with modest citrus, mild to moderate bitterness, and slightly sweet pilsner malts. Front of palate notices fruity esters and hop flavors (apple, pear, guava, mango, passion fruit) with light pilsner malt sweetness. Mid-palate finds mild to moderate bitterness and orange, guava, pineapple, mango, and passion fruit flavors combined with lightly sweet pilsner malt for a bright, slightly dank, fruity hop and sweet malt pilsner flavor. Back of palate notes a modest increase in bitterness and slightly doughy pilsner malt; fruit is present, but less so, and slight cat urine. Aftertaste is of moderate lingering bitterness, tropical fruits and apple, slightly sweet pilsner malt.

Beer is medium to medium-light in body with carbonation of medium-low intensity, leading to a slightly foamy (1/3) and smooth (2/3) mouthfeel; works for the style and the beer itself. Closes dry with light stickiness clinging to the lips and palate.
