Picked up a single at Princeton's Liquor and it's the second blond doppelbock I've had recently. The other being Long Winter's Nap from Blue Mountain Brewery. I complained that beer was all smooth malts with no hops. Well, August's Bock had a really nicely balanced herbal citrus hop character, but could have used a touch more malty bock flavor. Head to head, I'd take the Schell's though, it's still a very nice hoppy lager (relatively speaking).

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a glass mug.

A lovely beer, reddish-amber. An aggressive pour leads to a two-finger head that compacts down to a thin, foamy layer and some lingering ace.

The aroma is excellent, lots of yeasty bread with a hint of caramel and just a note of citrus.

The taste is excellent. The bitter hits my tongue first, followed by some nice bread flavors, a little sweetness and a bit of citrus and herbal hops. A very nice lingering bitter on the tongue.

Mouthfeel is really nice, a little chewy with a pleasant drying.

Overall, I really enjoyed this beer although is seemed closer to a bock than a dopplebock. Still, a wonderful collaboration between Schell's and the Gold Ochsen Brewery of Germany. I wish a had a few more...

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

Blonde Dopplebock? Sure ... similarities to the Hellesbock I assume. Broad malt nose, deep melanodian -like aromas with a bready backing. Mild crispness, semi-chewy medium body with a loaf of bread on the palate. Mild sweetness, just a hint of herbal hop to keep things level. Warming alcohol is super clean. Long malty finish that leans towards a slightly dry grassiness.

Incredibly tasty, beers like this are a great reminder how much I love lagers. Some serious drinking here.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Pint.

Appearance: Clear orange with thick, bubbly off-white head, but doesn't leave a lot behind.

Smell: Dried out malts, with cracker, apple and other fruits. Light hoppiness, but complex with citrus, tropical notes, spice and floral notes.

Taste: Interesting. Sweeter than the aroma, but still notice many of the same things - cracker, apple, cherry, citrus. There is some spiciness on the finish, but not much bitterness. There is a lingering citrusy, almost tropical, aftertaste that is unique for German hops. Almost Lagunitas-like. I wonder if that is from the new Polaris hops, as I don't think the Emerald, Tettnanger or Saphir would taste that way (although these are all recent hops other than Tettnanger).

Feel: Medium to full body. Carbonation is low. Fairly smooth, creamy and clean, but not quite as dry as desired.

Overall: The more I drink this, the more I notice the hops. Very interesting to say the least. I really am reminded of Lagunitas, and how they would make a Doppelbock. Odd, but I like it.

I just want to add that for a beer that is steeped in tradition, this is perhaps the least traditional beer Schell's has made.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep and clear golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid three fingers of off white head that slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing.

Smell: A bready and fairly sweet malt forward aroma with hints of earthy hops. Upfront pale and toasted malts with hints of biscuit, grains, toasted bread, caramel, straw, yeast, and cracker. Earthy and floral hops with hints of grass and pine. Light citrus hints of orange peel and lemon zest. Also some fruit hints of apple and fig. A pretty solid bock aroma with more hops than typical.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a bready and moderately sweet malty taste with a nice balance of earthy and citrus hops. Upfront taste of toasty malts with notes of biscuit, toasted bread, grains, caramel, yeast, cracker, and straw. Fruit taste of apple, fig, and banana. Solid hop presence with earthy and floral notes. Notes of pine and grass along with citrus hop notes of orange peel and lemon. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and slightly chewy. Smooth with a fairly drying finish.

Overall: A pretty good spin on a German Bock. Good malt flavor with a surprisingly stronger hop presence than expected.

Pours a clear orange/amber color with a massive head that slowly settled to a thick cap. A lot of sticky lacing is left down the glass.

Unique aroma for a doppelbock and I have not smelled another similar to this. I pick up oranges and lemons. Some typical bock aromas of raisins and bready malt manage to sneak in.

Quite hoppy in flavor and bitterness. Almost drinks like an IPA. I get citrus, mostly orange, that almost covers up the maltiness. There is a little dark fruit and grain but it is mostly hops. Bitterness is definitely high for a doppelbock, but I would call it on the lower side of moderate for American styles. A touch of alcohol in the finish.

Medium to medium high in heft of body. Carbonation is on the lower side. Seems very well paired for each other.

Schell's takes another traditional style and gives it their own personal twist. Maybe more traditional then what American tastes are use to.

Bright jewel tone orange, fully saturated with some occasional rising bubbles in the center. Clarity is ultra sharp, you can read a paper through it. Two fingers of foam initially, delicate rings of drippy lace in the glass, frothy collar around the edges. Skim parts in the center after a few sips.

Grassy grainy aroma, yeast and sweet citrus peel when swirled.

Very smooth with subtle flavors, light citrus peel and mild bitterness in the aftertaste. Sweetness is reserved, and not detected in the aftertaste but it's sticky on the lips. Light and drinkable with a substantial feel. Rich maltiness, very nice kiss of citrus. Highly balanced and easy to drink. Recommended.
