Golden straw in color with a slight haze, Roggen Pilsner starts off the tasting experience on a positive note, with a nose of rye, grain, and light spice. The foam looks nice and it does leave some lacing as you drink.

With the taste, Roggen Pilsner delivers what you expect. It emphasizes flavors of grain, rye, bread, and some light peppery spice and grassiness. The beer is light in body, but not watery in any way, with a crisp, clean mouthfeel.

This entry in the August Schell Anniversary Pilsner series is a good one, although not my favorite in the series. It is very easy- drinking and certainly better than a macro- lager. I love the crispness and I like its compatibility. It seems like a beer that would go well with just about any food or all by itself. The easy- drinking nature and other qualities make it a beer worth trying.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

Crystal clear pale golden yellow, tight thin white lacing leaves a good trail down the glass. Aromas of fresh bread, faint spicy rye, and floral hop. Lighter bodied, very smooth with a big crispness. Mild hop resin meets spicy rye, bready grain lines up with the crispness and the hop bitterness evens everything out.

Not too shabby, I expected a bit more rye character but good drinking none the less.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Pilsner glass.

Appearance: Light, slightly hazy, yellow with moderate white head and slight lacing lines.

Smell: Mostly straw and grass, with some apple, pear and peppery hops. Somewhat spicy overall.

Taste: Grassy, grainy and straw-like, with sweet apple and pear. Has a strong peppery and spicy finish that is somewhat a little bit bitter.

Feel: Moderately high carbonation, light body that is almost creamy. Very dry.

Overall: I think this is the best of their Pilsners, as the spicy rye makes it crisper and more refreshing. However, it still is not that different.

Pale, clear straw color with one finger of head that quickly settled to a thin cap. Heavy lacing is left down the glass. Does not appear to be as heavily carbonated as the other pils in the Schell's sampler.

Not as extraordinary aromatic as I was hoping. Not much to set this apart from more rudimentary pilsners. Slight hint of rye and some spicy Tettnang hops. Could easily pass it self off as a rudimentary German pilsner.

Faint rye hint upfront then it is gone. Dry pilsner malt makes up most of the flavor and is complemented by spicy hops. Bitterness is low and balanced. Dry and crisp.

Light body but the carbonation seems a little low for this type of beer. Definitely not as lively as Schell's other pilsners.

The pilsner I was most looking forward to and ultimately disappointed me. Still quite good but did not live up to the expectations of this drinker.

Sye is very light on the aroma. Holds characteristic qualities of Schell lagers. Soft malt, but with minimal hopping here.
Very clear and pale yellow in my pils glass. Smallish head settles out quickly.
Light spiciness in the flavor too, but it is there. More hopping here, but not strong. And the soft malt. Creaminess with the feel and carbonation. A touch of astringency to the taste and feel, plus some expected drying in the end.
Let me see where this goes with a little warming. Seems to take on a little nuttiness as warms and is a bit more flavorful if allowed to warm.

clear golden color with not much head on it. smell is great: creamed wheat with spice and earth. there's some good bonfire/barnyard rye flavor and earthy hops, this all over a clean pils. spicy finish, feel has some heft.

Hoping this is the 30th Anniversary Pilsner Series Roggen, 'cause that's what I'm going to review.

Another in a fine gift of Minn beers from Chaz and Grant.

A -- Pours a clear gold with a firm white head that holds up well.

S -- Sweet malts, spiciness from the rye, light citrus character from hops, mild DMS.

T -- Spiciness from the rye right up front that melds into a lightly sweet malt character and even spicier hops. Finishes bitter from hops with a touch of citrus and the rye spiciness.

M -- Mouthfeel is quite soft, finishing dry. The body is light to light medium.

O -- An easy drinking beer with great character that stands out from other Pilsners without trying to be a Pale Ale. Another in this line that needs to be more than a limited release.

Part of the 30th anniversary pilsner set.

Pours a finger of off white head. Color is a clear straw yellow. Lac left. Good retention.

Flavor profile: Bready malts. Grassy, earthy hops. Very clean. The noble hops are definitely present. The rye is very minimal. I suppose that is a good thing for a pilsner since if it was stronger, it would be overbearing. Spicy in both the since of hops and malts.

Mouthfeel: Crisp with a light spiciness. Light bodied. Good carbonation. Ends clean.

Overall, another great pilsner. Well balanced and extremely drinkable.
