Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright and clear golden orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Solid two fingers of white head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A bready and sweet malt forward aroma that has some more hop presence than the 84 version. Upfront pale malt with hints of grains, straw, biscuit, cereal, and yeast. Citrus fruit hints of orange and lemon. Earthy and floral hops with some hints of grass. Some spicy hop hints as well. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a crisp, bready, and fairly sweet malt driven taste with good notes of biscuit and earthy hops. Pale malts with some upfront notes of biscuit, grains, straw, cereal, and yeast. Good citrus fruit notes of lemon and orange. Floral, earthy, and spicy hops with some notes of grass. A very solid pilsener taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, clean, and very smooth with a fairly drying finish.

Overall: A very solid pilsener taste. A little hoppier than the original but nicely balanced and clean.

Drinking this while watching the first match of the 2014 World Cup, Brazil vs. Croatia. Tasted 12 June 2014.

Pours a very clear pale golden yellow. Like diluted filtered apple juice. One finger of white head, good retention and decent lacing.

Smell is warm, golden, and corny. Very grainy, mildly sweet. Has a bit of the crisp hop bite, but not as much as I'd like.

Taste is more peppy. Some zip and some saaz hop bite. Kinda peppery, kinda prickly, kinda herbal. That spice and a little bitterness provide a nice balance for the warmth and sweetness (both of which are reduced from the smell).

Feel is fine. Medium-light body. A little more mouth-filling than I expect it to be. Lasts longer than I want it to, which makes it less refreshing, as it loses some of the crispness in the finish.

An okay pilsener. Drinkable, but nothing special about it. Reasonably flavorful, but not all that flavorful; reasonably varied, but not all that varied. Unremarkable, but not bad.

First of all, points to appearance on the retro-label -- takes me back in time to when beer hunting was a true skill!

I have to admit that I didn't realize this was the 30th Anniversary 2014 beer when I grabbed it. I thought it was the usual Schell's Pils. That said...

A -- Clear, straw gold with a dense, pillowy white head. Just what to expect in a Pils.

S -- Mix of citrus and spicy hop characters very dominant, but not overwhelming. The bright citrus is a little off character than the usual Pilsner style, but it's not Cascade or Citra. Also wish there was more malt character in the aroma.

T -- Interesting in that you get a hit of citrus first that quickly blends to noble-hop spiciness and then some mellow, bready malt character balances out everything. A spicy bitterness takes up the finish and aftertaste. To me, the citrus character is a bit surprising in this style of beer, but the balance of lightly sweet, bready malts and spiciness is even more surprising in its great flavor.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft to slightly (slightly) syrupy with a crisp, almost dry finish.

O -- Okay, I have to say that this beer may have perfected a good cross between the American Pale Ale and a German Pilsner. The hops are quite present and flavorful -- even slightly left of style, but they don't overwhelm and stunt the palate. The malt backbone could be a little more prominent to my liking, but the malt balances to the hops very nicely. I could drink a lot of this.

Pours a huge, soapy white head with nice lacing. A nice grassy, slightly citric aroma. Gold color. Starts with a grassy, grainy hoppiness. Low-medium bitterness. A flash of malt and metallic. Lingering bitterness.

This isn't too bad. The metallic part really turns me off to it, though. Fortunately, by about the 4th sip, it disappears (metallic tastes always work that way for me), and this becomes much, much nicer. A solid pislner.

Yellowish in color with a nose of sweet malt and grass, August Schell 2014 Pilsner produces only a small amount of white foam, but does leave some lacing as you drink. The body of the beer is clear and clean- looking, very non- intimidating overall.

Moving to the taste, this pilsner offers flavors of sweet malts, grains, and grassy hops. The beer is snappy and clean, medium in body, and easily drinkable. I could detect some slight piney notes, some herbs, and there is even a little bit of citrus if you search long enough.

2014 is one of four unique pilsner beers released by August Schell in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Schell Pils. This one, in a green- labeled bottle, is the 2014 version of the original. It’s a clean, crisp beer with many characteristics of a true Czech pilsner, but with an American twist. I find it tasty, agreeable, and not overdone or understated in any way. It might be a little bit better with more active carbonation, but I still found it good overall and it earns a recommendation from me.

Poured into classic pilsner glass and classic looking it is. I feel like a beer commerial from the late 1960's.
Nice sweet hop aroma (kind of a surprise in what it packs not that it is there). A bit of sulfur. A slight grainy background, but the sweet fruit/herbal aroma is nice.
Nice white head caps a brilliantly clear yellow/gold body. Some lacing. "Here's to you"
Well mixed malt and hop character with each present and accounted for throughout the drink. A bit of that lager sourness and then drying on the finish with a lingering hop flavor (not as strong as some for style, but I like where this one is at). I like the grainy malt flavor, but again the hops are the show here. Fresh and flavorful, drying, bittering and overall interesting.
Body is as it should be - carbonated highly (which is filling) on a lighter body drink.
This seems less rich than the previous derivation of this beer and I, therefore, find it easier to drink and more likely to have another.
