Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a hefeweizen glass.

Big hefe pour into my glass shows a lovely, clear golden beer with a nice foamy head that slowly compacts and leaves some nice lacing all down the glass.

Nice aroma, lots of banana and spice and a touch of underlying hops.

The taste is quite nice. Banana and clove and a bit of hop bitterness at the end.

Mouthfeel is a little thin.

Overall, a very good beer but a bit harsher and less refined than the 2014 version. Still, very tasty!

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Weizen glass.

Appearance: Clear golden straw with decent white head, but not as high as their modern Hefe.

Smell: Mostly wheat, fairly dry. Some light banana and clove.

Taste: The banana and clove is even lighter in the taste, as the wheat really dominates. Some wheat aftertaste as well.

Feel: Fairly smooth and creamy with moderate carbonation. Fairly dry but the aftertaste impacts the crispness.

Overall: Not nearly as flavorful as Schell's modern version. I don't know how much is due to recipe changes vs. simply not filtering the beer any longer. I am happy to have tried this for historical reasons, but otherwise not worth having again.

2nd bottle from the hefeweizen sampler 12 pack from Schells. Initial impression of this brew was that it is similiar to their current hefe but lacks a bit of the mouthfeel-presumably from the filtering.
A-poured into a tall pilsener glass this brew looks like a pale lager except for the healthy finger of dense pure white frothy head. Clear and light golden.
S-smells like a hefe. Plenty of those banana like esters and hints of spicy clove. Always a pleasant aroma. Bready malt. Clean.
T-like the aroma. Nice clean bready malt with a moderate amount of fruity esters and just a hint of spice.
M-served a little colder than my first bottle the body comes across thicker, which I like. Fairly highly carbonated for the style. Clean and crisp. Easy drinking shit.
O-note to self. Drink this one close to 30F. Still flavorful with a better mouthfeel. Like this beer but prefer today's version. Still fun to go back in time when the only beer I was drinking was the warm backwash in dad's returnable stash of Hamms-this is pretty good too.

12 oz. bottle poured into a chalice.

Appearance - Clear at the bottom where the glass is narrower, but hazy at the top. Small white head settles to just a thin collar. Golden body.

Smell - Banana and clove. Lots of wheat.

Taste - A little more bubblegum here. Banana and clove flavors build up quickly and dominate for a brief moment before wheat and cracker malt encompass the whole flavor. The finish has an intense... I don't know what to call it. A build up of wheat until it becomes almost like sourdough.

Mouthfeel - Grainy. That finish isn't great. Medium carbonation and pretty light.

Overall - I drank it ok, but it wasn't something I was gulping down.

The original Schell's Weiss was a bit before my time but nice they brought it back to try it at last. Pours a clear, pale golden color with a massive head that slowly settled to a thick cap. Massive amount of lacing is left down the glass.

Not much difference in the aroma compared to their modern day hefeweizen. Maybe a little muted but with ample amounts of cloves, bananas, and wheat.

Flavor is similar to their current hefeweizen. A little less flavorful and a little bit more dry. Notes of bananas, cloves, and a slight wheat twang. A bit of bubblegum as well.

Light body with effervescent carbonation. Definitely not chewy like their hefe.

A nice easy drinking wheat beer that is interesting enough to warrant continuous consumption.

Thanks to Matt for the bottle line-up, but mostly for the proper glassware.

Poured this into a August Schell hex-base weisse glass. Clear, golden color, with a huge white head that filled the top of the glass, appropriately. Aroma of banana and clove, yucky wheat malts. In the taste, rotten banana, white bread, bubblegum, clovy spice. Just off-putting overall...I didn't care for it. Medium body, mouthfeel was slick and grainy. I'm not a huge fan of the style, but I've definitely had better than this.

Poured into a reidel wheat beer glass.
Soft phenols (a little spiciness with some clove, and banana. Also not crystal clear. Clean but some cloudiness. Full white head.
Subdued aroma but nice.
Nice prickliness from the bubbles yet still really quite soft. Dries out quite nicely too for a long finish. A tad on the thinner side after the carbonation - certainly makes it a quick drink if hot and thirsty enough.
Cleaner flavor than typical hefe's yet still certainly flavors for style. Wheat flavor is milder as are the yeast notes, but it's still a hefe. Others have noted there might be some corn in here. I can't quite tell (and I"ll probably kill it before it warms up enough to tell with more certainty).
Certainly not as good as the more contemporary recipe, but still a nice drink.

12oz bottle out of the sampler

Smells like those old root beer cap candies. Seriously, exactly like that. Harsh, gritty feel... wheat gives way to cream, lemon, confectioners sugar. Tart, maybe a little pepper.

Unremarkable, besides the nostalgia inducing smell.

Glad I am getting a chance to try the original recipe.

The obvious difference is that the original is filtered and thus a pretty clear beer. Orange hued gold. A nice layer of white head with good retention and lace. Active carbonation in the glass.

Flavor profile: This beer reminds me a ton of the current hefe. A lot of bananas, cloves, yeast, wheat, and some bubblegum.

Mouthfeel: Here is where I notice the biggest difference. The current is creamier and this seems to be a bit more dry. Light to medium bodied. Good amount of carbonation.

Overall, a solid wheat beer that is easy to drink. This one seems to be a bit lighter and easier to drink than the current version, but not as dominate in the flavors.

Appearance: Clear gold, good head.

Smell: Nice banana aroma.

Taste: Mildly sweet with a little banana and touch of lemon. Easy drinker.

Overall: Beer #1 in the Schell Weizen mixer. The 1984 is pretty tasty but not as intensely flavorful as the 2014 weiss. Could be because of the filtering/style. Touches the usual hefe bases but not as strong. Interesting to try.
