August Schell Weizenbock. #4 in the 30th Anniversary Hefe Weizen Series.

Bright golden and clouded, below a thick, snowy white head. Looking good.

Aroma: slightly sharp, citric and spicy, this has got the wizen yeast thing going on full steam ahead. Orange and lemon galore. Lovely stuff.

Taste: Once on the palate, it's hefe weizen all over the place, Lays long in the mouth and stays a spell. Soft, slightly sweet, creamy and delicious. You can taste some fusels, it's got to be a bit higher on the alcohol level, though I'll have to hunt some to find the number, as Schell's doesn't advertise that fact on the label.

One thing that surprises me is the color. Bocks are normally darker, stronger lagers. Hefe Weizens are top-fermenting ales, and the wheaten bocks, or doppelbocks, I've had before are typically darker in color. Then, there's the ….(fill in later) (btw, if you can read this, pretend you didn't. shhh….)

Well, never mind about all that. It's flat out delicious, and my favorite of the four wheat beers in the 30th Anniversary sampler pack.

Hey, I forgot to check out…what does the label tell us? "Schell's Weizenbock is an experimental Weiss Beer made for this series. It's stronger and aggressively hopped with Triskel hops. It's a uniquely fruity, hoppy wheat beer experience."

That it is.

This has some of the characteristics I like in weizenbock and some I don't....

Positives:

Nice light banana estery aroma and taste...some cloves as well.

Negatives:

Too much hops....hop usage doesn't seem to fit the style...dry, sharp...

Overall:

I wouldn't call this horrible but it is not real spot-one for style and I expect a German type brewery to be spot-on and not push the boundaries in new ways. It's OK. I wouldn't buy it again if offered in six-packs or whatever. I know what I like in this style and this interpretation does not do it for me. Funny as I love the heck out of their hefe.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Weizen glass.

Appearance: Cloudy yellow-orange with light off-white head.

Smell: Banana, clove, dry spiciness, slight tartness.

Taste: Banana, wheat and clove core, as expected, but not as much sweet bubblegum as seen in some examples of the style. There are some floral and tart grapefruit notes from the Triskel hops that I am surprised that other reviewers have not noted. This is actually pretty hoppy, but just a titch bitter.

Feel: Fairly full body with moderately high carbonation. Pretty dry finish.

Overall: Pretty dry and hoppy for a Weizenbock. This is certainly not typical of the style, but like the August's Bock they made last fall, I like the use of nontraditional hops in a traditional German beer. I hope the average goes up for this one, because I don't think many people get what was intended here.

A large layer of creamy white head that fades to half a finger. Good retention with a bunch of sticky lace.

Flavor profile: Notes of bananas, cloves, lemon zest, citrus, caramel, and wheat with the first taste. It has a barley/cereal flavor in the background with light notes of chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Dry, but creamy. Light to medium bodied.

Overall, a lighter weizenbock in my opinion. Easy to drink and good for the summer. A bit dry for me, however.

Cloudy golden color with a large head that slowly settled to a thick cap. Moderate amount of lacing is left down the glass.

Not a very appealing aroma. Sort of astringent and metallic and raw wort. There are faint hints of clove and banana esters.

Flavor is better. A lot of wheat flavor with a little bit of a twang. The yeast did not really seem to perform in this beer as it tastes a little under attenuated. Sweet finish with low bitterness.

Semi full body with nice mellow carbonation. Rich and smooth texture.

Very underwhelmed with this beer. I know Schell's can produce a weizenbock, so not sure why this was not that good.
