Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
First brewed in 1984, Schell’s Hefeweizen is made with a blend of wheat malt and barley malts. We use an authentic wheat beer yeast culture, which gives the beer a fruity ale character dominated by a citrus-like tartness. Refreshingly light character with a higher than normal carbonation level. Straw-colored and cloudy from the unfiltered yeast left in suspension. Notes of banana and clove with a slight bready malt flavor.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into water glass at work.

Appearance: Pale cloudy yellow. Looks orange when held away from the light. A relatively aggressive pour plus the high carbonation produces a fast forming foamy head but subsides faster than I would like without much lacing.

Smell: Bananas, bananas, bananas. Also some cloves and light hops.

Taste: Despite the smell, the cloves are stronger than the banana taste. Mild wheat maltiness, with maybe a hint of hops at the end (unless that is just more clove).

Feel: Pretty high carbonation, fairly light but slightly creamy.

Drinkability: Easy to quaff Hefe. Very, very refreshing, and one of the best American made Hefeweizens, as it is truly German in style.

Poured into a large bowled wheat glass from a 12oz. brown long neck bottle with crimped cap. Best by 8-22-07.

Cloudy lemmon yellowy color slight golden hue. 1" creamy white head dissapated quickly to a slight coating. Good carbination with a decent amount of bubbles stringing from the sides of the glass.

Clean aroma with a light to moderate bannana and clove nose, both aroma about the same intenesity. Some light citrus with a slight hint of pineapple. Good, pleasing aroma.

Lots of clove taste up front on the moderate side, good spicy tanginess a hint of nutmeg and some faint bannana tastes.Light citrusy finish.

Light mouthfeel.astringent with some grainyness. Not a great wheat beer, but a decent offering was just a bit on the light side. Would be a good starter wheat beer, easy on the palate.

Picked up a 12er of this with a BB date of 092913, enjoyed a couple bottles of this, time for a review.

A-Poured into a tall pilsener glass this beer explodes into a white fluffy heady beast with big time staying power and lacing. Light golden in color, slightly hazy with suspended yeast with lots of small bubbles.

S-Estery banana aroma is strongest with a weak phenolic clove character. Plenty of bready, grainy wheat aroma. Very nice.

T-The taste is more balanced between the banana and clove character with a fairly strong bready wheat taste. A weak bitter hoppy finish.

M-Medium bodied with a soft taste. The carbonation is restrained. Slight creaminess with a bit of a lingering finish.

O-A solid hefe. Nice characteristic appearance and flavor with a nice balance of flavors. Would like a cleaner finish but an enjoyable brew.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: Cloudy yellowish gold with a big three finger white head with very good retention. Lots of lacing.

Smell: Solid aroma of bananas, clove, and bubblegum with wheat. Hints of yeast, biscuity malts, and citrus lemon.

Taste: A tasty and balanced combination of wheat and yeast giving flavors of banana, clove spices, and bubblegum with hints of lemon.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very smooth and crisp.

Overall: A very good American version of a Hefeweizen. Tasty and refreshing.

Properly hazy pineapple color, head starts nice but is pretty quick to settle to a yellowish froth skim. Wide partial laces. Estery aroma, but leaning toward fleshy fruit rather than overt banana. There's a sense of tropical fruit (kiwi and mango) in the flavor, an early assertion with just a speck of mid mouth cloviness. Medium body. A slight lemon wheat tang at the end. I like it, the estery qualities are under control and its smooth and subdued.

After reading other reviews here...well, I must have diferent tastes in wheat brews...definitely a fresh bottle, here...

(Served in a Hefe-weizen glass)

A- This beer is a hazy golden yellow with a thin white head. Slow carbonation floats to the top.

S- light yeast and banana notes but pretty clean nose. Some notes of soft wheat as it warms.

T- Nice soft wheat taste with hints of banana and clove both. Very nice and flavors are not overpowering at all.

M- medium mouthfeel with a bit of fizz.

D-Very nice and good match to style. I would like to see a bit more bready characteristics or maybe some pils malt to balance it out. Very nice though.

Im not going into details for the fact that no American breweries have come close to this authenticity for this style and I have tried many American Hefes. This brew could easily be mistaken as an authentic hefe (albiet a little tartier) from Germany if it wasnt for the American Brand. In a blind test, I think it goes head to head with the German Paulaner Hefe and im a big fan of Paulaner Hefeweizen. It says a lot. In conclusion, this beer is not only worth your money but deserves more of your money.

Schell- Hefeweizen

On tap at the Wine Cafe- Mankato, MN.

Appearance- hazy/ cloudy yellow with a thick billowy head. Laced down the glass.
Smell- light banana clove with the hay/ wheat odor.
Taste- nice middle of the road Hefe flavor not to bold and strong but a flavorful pounder.
Mouthfeel- just a notch above watery. A chugger with flavor.

Overall- A nice lighty flavorful Hefe that is too easy to pound. Not bad!!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Weizen glass.

Appearance - Cloudy Yellow with a nice fluffy head. Left nice lacing behind.

Smell - Banana, citrus, floral hops, yeast. Nice, but subtle.

Taste - Slight banana flavor, sweet yeast and nice citrus tang (even before adding the lemon slice). Not quite the bubblegum sweet yeast flavor of the real German Hefe's, but a nice American interpretation.

Mouthfeel - Light and slippery. Just the right amount of carbonation. Refreshing feel on the tongue.

Drinkability - Very drinkable. Could easily do a session with these on a warm summer day/night. One of my favorite Schell's beers.

A cloudy, yellow-gold body is topped by a mid-sized head of bright white foam that quickly dwindles down to just a collar, and completely disappears at mid-glass. The nose is interesting, however. Cloves are obvious, and there's a mild banana as well, but it offers an additional fruitiness that's intriguing. At times it appears lemony; but there's also some kind of a melon or papaya note involved as well. The body is light/medium and its fine carbonation just caresses the tongue, leaving it smooth in the mouth. All of the interesting fruitiness of the nose returns in the flavor, wrapped in a thin blanket of lightly sweet wheat malt. There's a mild touch of bitterness to it; and it finishes with a flash of tartness before drying. Nicely done!

A pale hazy straw yellow liquid. It has a big billowy two fingers of head that fades quickly into a thin layer.

The nose is very estery. Tons of clove, banana, some bubble gum, and lemon. Very spicy and delicious smelling.

The first gulp follows the nose. Tons of spicy yeasty esters. Banana, bubble gum, citrus notes. It's really refreshing.

Mouthfeel is medium with a medium to level of carbonation.

A tasty and very easy drinking hefe. I wouldn't mind putting a bunch of these down if I had some more.

I had a pint at Old Chicago. There was a lot of great things going on wit this beer, but it was just missing a crisp malt or hop note to round things out. There's a big banana and clove spice over the smooth wheat malts, but there seems to be almost no bitterness or edge from the malt. It's just need a little balance to the rich yeast character that dominates the beer. That said, it reminds me a bit of Franziskaner and overall, is fairly tasty.

A: Hazy and straw-yellow with a white foamy head that keeps its form quite well; lacing is nice too

S: Loads of yeasty goodness; this beer smells like a hell of a hefe with banana, cloves, apples, and black pepper all dancing on top of an earthy, musty, grassy, and grainy underbelly

T: All of the good hefe qualities are here with nice balance between the fruity and spicy yeast and the grainy malts

F: A touch thin but fairly decent mouth feel overall with enough body to keep you satisfied

O: This is one damn refreshing hefeweizen; you could drink so much of this stuff; it is probably one of the best American versions of the style out there

Schell’s HefeWeizen: Pours a bright golden color with a very poor head. The beer is very cloudy, with obvious yeast left over from the bottle conditioning.

The aroma is sweet, very citrus, with bare hints of banana.

The taste is fairly pleasant, although I detect a long lasting aftertaste of sour popcorn with lemon butter. Hmm. There is a banana bread taste at the inception, followed by rather assertive sweetness, ending off with above noted popcorn taste. Light in body, but notable carbonation.

Fairly decent.

Hazy, pale yellow-peachy hue. Smallish white head that doesn’t hold long, produces soapy residue. No lace. Pleasant bouquet… cloves, mild wheaty-yeast, and vanilla construct the moderately potent nose. The palate is clovey with some hints of lemon but more tropical fruit influences… tasty banana hints too... a kiss of pepper… slightly tart, towards the finish a slight spiciness emerges but mellows greatly in the aftertaste, which is mainly yeasty/wheaty/clove. Medium-light body. Solid carbonation. Very drinkable! Aside from appearance this is a damn nice Hefeweizen, I’d gladly sip this one again. Try one.

Thanks ZAP!

Pours a cloudy, pale yellow with a small head that quickly recedes. Just a little lacing is left on the glass. I get a whiff of cloves with a little yeast in the background. The flavor is likewise one dimensional. Mostly cloves with just a little sweetness sneaking in on the finish. Light body with perfect carbonation as well as low ABV makes for a highly sessionable beer. No problem putting many of these down in a sitting but I can find more flavorful Hefeweizens around.
