Notes/Commercial Description:
First brewed in 1984, Schell’s Hefeweizen is made with a blend of wheat malt and barley malts. We use an authentic wheat beer yeast culture, which gives the beer a fruity ale character dominated by a citrus-like tartness. Refreshingly light character with a higher than normal carbonation level. Straw-colored and cloudy from the unfiltered yeast left in suspension. Notes of banana and clove with a slight bready malt flavor.

Poured into a 22 oz Hefe vase.

A: Head could be bigger, it's barely 2 fingers, but it's a nice cloudy yellow. It was neat to actually watch the yeast fall down through the beer. Nice active carbonation. This head is fading fast.

T: Cloves and Bananas! More cloves than I remember from past tastings. Pungent, but not unpleasant. Quite good actually. It finishes a little sharp, but very similar to pretty much all the best Bavarian Hefe's

T: The banana is a little more there in the taste, which is not overall as strong as the aroma. a little less full bodied than I remember, "banana milk shake' was once a term I used, but still great.

M: Again, lighter than I remember, but still wonderfully refreshing.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy honey color with a whipped egg white head that is adequate but not quite up to the German standard; a few strand of lace cling to the side of the glass

Smell: Banana bread with a strong clove and pepper aspect

Taste: Banana bread up front - nothing surprising here; but in the middle there is an explosion of clove, vanilla and pepper spice that continues into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied but not quite creamy enough; moderate to high carbonation

Overall: Been looking to try this one for a while now and the persistence has finally paid off; the spice kick on this beer is non-traditional but a great American angle on the style

Thanks, copslovebeer, for the opportunity

Picked up a 12er of this with a BB date of 092913, enjoyed a couple bottles of this, time for a review.

A-Poured into a tall pilsener glass this beer explodes into a white fluffy heady beast with big time staying power and lacing. Light golden in color, slightly hazy with suspended yeast with lots of small bubbles.

S-Estery banana aroma is strongest with a weak phenolic clove character. Plenty of bready, grainy wheat aroma. Very nice.

T-The taste is more balanced between the banana and clove character with a fairly strong bready wheat taste. A weak bitter hoppy finish.

M-Medium bodied with a soft taste. The carbonation is restrained. Slight creaminess with a bit of a lingering finish.

O-A solid hefe. Nice characteristic appearance and flavor with a nice balance of flavors. Would like a cleaner finish but an enjoyable brew.

Tasted 18 July 2013.

Pours cloudy pale golden-straw yellow. One finger of white head, good retention and pretty lacing.

Smell is banana bread with cloves on top. Big fruity esters, spice, and potent yeast that reminds me of a genetics lab. Very good.

Main downside is, for me, just too much bitterness in the back part. I like the light fruit and spice, but I want it to drift more into that spicy realm, rather than the bitter twang.

Feel is fabulous. Light, with a fluffy, foamy carbonation that's boosted without being over the top. Excellent.

A really good hefeweizen. Big banana and clove, backed by bready yeast. Excellent, and will definitely be one of my go-to hefes.
