Appearing brown to the naked eye, Ulmer Braun is a very deep chestnut/ruby in color when held up to direct sunlight. The beer itself is very clear/nearly brilliant. A medium pour into a pokal produces a one-fingered, medium tan head and a good bit of lacing. Nose is lightly fruity, with equal parts apple and sour cherry along with a light caramel note. Lightly metallic, but in no way terribly off-style. Fruity on the first sip, with just a touch of diacetyl coming around midway through and finishing with a light, almost hoppy tanginess. Medium in body, this one leans toward a "more full-bodied than average" drink, and as such I have to give it marks for style and drinkability. Carbonation is good, even though this one isn't by any means fresh. Just a touch of biscuit malt dryness on the finish lends a hand to the drinkability as well; the sour cherry note in the nose hints at the light tang in this one.

This is the beer that I wish Schell's Dark was, especially now that that other beer has been re-branded and marketed to the retro-loving post modern ironic hipsters in Minneapolis. Ulmer Braun is not a bad interpretation for the style, and fits very comfortably into the range of August Schell's output. I have heard that this has been discontinued (fwiw I can't find it in Minneapolis anymore) and I picked up one of the last two six packs from Northfield Liquor (Northfield, MN) over the weekend. Bottled late March 2007, but held up quite well. This one used to be a great bargain as well, usually less than $5 per six-pack. C'est la vie . . .

A nice rich, brown lager. There's a big cocoa, dark roasted caramel, and sweet licorice malt taste that's followed up by a hit of grassy hops. The aroma is similar but with a little cola. Keep it cold, however, for the best flavor profile. Mine got a touch sour as it warmed.

Worth trying if you're into dark lagers. There's nothing bland about this one.

pours out a deep garnet colour, ruby hues...with a fairly thick and frothy head. a decent and appropriate lace is left as i sip. aroma is sweetish; a bit of toffee and brown sugar, mixed with fruity tones, followed by hints of caramel and cocoa. upon first sip, it seems pretty nice...nice dark malts with flavours of caramel and toffee. one can tell this is a schell beer by its "house flavour"...sort of boring and bland. after one bottle all this brew seems to be is a step up from the dark lager that schell brews. a bit artificial tasting...hints of a metallic bite linger on the tongue. this concoction gets less likeable the more i drink it. the mouthfeel suffers as that annoying metallic twinge magnifies the less than ample body. it finishes with a bitter hop bite that probably was intended to balance the sweetness...but just mucks up the flavour profile even more.

looks great, smells the part, but tastes crappy for the intended style.

c'mon schell, this beer stoops down to gluek level...

Clear brown color, thick creamy head.
Nose is soft and sweet, caramelly, nutty, pretty nice.
arrives sweetly on the tongue as well, with a snappy blast of carbonation, that dulls after time. Flavor feels over-cola-ish after awhile, but no less pleasant. Light bodied, soft, brief finish.
Drinks down okay, but not very memorable.
and at $4.97 a 6-pack, who am i to quibble?

Obviously brewed by August Schell...It's right on the bottle cap...
Anyways, This is a very solid dark lager beer. Pours a nice maroon color, with a little white head with a little retention. Smells of raosted malt and maybe a little bit of carmel. Definitely roasted malts in the flavor, a little coffee, moderate hops. Pretty good, check it out if you are ever in the Southern Minnesota area.

I always thought that the "Ulmer" beers were under Schell's "roof" and the Beer Hunter's Guide to Minnesota (http://www.historyontheweb.org/minnbrew/guide.html) confirmed it.

Clear deep umber color. 1/8 inch head that's medium-bubbled and consistent. Not much of any aroma. Light-bodied, very subdued taste, just a touch of bitterness from malts that taste pretty roasted. A little hop at the back. Very easy to drink brew, balanced in its limited way. Just not very interesting. OK beer, a "session-er"...
